LAET, Johannes de.
Alden & Landis 30/88; Borba de Moraes, p. 384; Sabin 38555; cf. Burden, The Mapping of North America 229-231. Rare enlarged second edition of this important account of the Americas by a director of the Dutch West India Company, Johannes de Laet (1581-1649). As a director of the WIC, Laet was in a good position to have access to information from the great wave of Dutch seafaring in the early part of the 17th century. Each of the 18 constituent books is devoted to a different region of the New World. The first book treats the West Indies, the second Canada, the third Virginia, the fourth Florida, and the fifth Mexico. The sixth book devotes extensive space to discoveries in California, the Gulf of California, and New Mexico. The remaining books describe the northern coast of South America, Peru, Chile, and Brazil. The 14 maps are engraved by the famous Hessel Gerritsz., official chart maker of the Dutch East India Company. These maps are the very best of the Americas to appear up to this time of publication (only 10 appeared in the first edition); they illustrate the Western Hemisphere, the Caribbean, New France, New England and Virginia, Florida, Mexico and Central America, Terra Firma (north-western South America), Peru, Chile, far South America, Paraguay and the Rio de la Plata basin, Brazil, Guiana, and Venezuela. Some light dampstains, minor soiling, without first free endpaper, otherwise in very good condition.

BUNTING, Heinrich
Heinrich Bünting. unbound. Map. Woodcut with hand coloring. Sheet measures 12" x 14.75".This unusual map by Heinrich Bunting dates to circa 1581. The map depicts the ancient world and focuses on the continents of Africa, Europe and Asia. Although the continents appear to be presented in a rudimentary manner, they do in fact reflect geographic reality, showing important cities, including those associated with the travels of Biblical characters. Of interest are the many oddities presented on the map. The bottom left of the map includes a part of the coast of Brazil (America Die Newe Welt). In Asia, the Caspian Sea and the River Ganges dominate. Taprobana (Ceylon or Sri Lanka) is labeled, but no landmass is noted. Africa presents the Ptolemaic conception of the Nile and the mythical Mountains of the Moon (Montes Lunea). A large island in the center is the the mythical island of Meroe, where the tombs of the Nubian Kings were supposedly located. The map hints to Bunting's famous depiction of the European continent as a queen and the Mediterranean Sea connects to the Black Sea. Perhaps the most important and intriguing feature of the map is the partial landmass that appears on the lower right labeled 'India Meridionalis'. The striking resemblance of this landmass to the western coast of Africa, appearing at approximately the same position as the then 'undiscovered' continent would be, this map gave rise to the speculation that perhaps Portuguese knowledge of Australia existed nearly 25 years prior to the Dutch discovery of Australia by Willem Janszoon in 1606. Most likely, … [Click Below for Full Description]

BRAUN, George, & Franz Hogenberg
Cologne: , 1581. Framed size: 510 × 600 mm. Copperplate engraving with hand colour. Latin text on verso Fine condition. This wonderful, early plan of Chester was published in the third volume (of 6) of Braun and Hogenberg's epic work 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum'; published between 1572 and 1617. This monumental city atlas contained some 546 bird's eye city prospects and map plans. The work was originally published to accompany Abraham Ortelius' great atlas; the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of 1570. This plan of Chester depicts it in Elizabethan times, with appropriate attired figures in the foreground, a inscription in Latin, numerous aristocratic and royal heraldic shields, and the coats of arms of the city itself and of the bishop of the city. The river Dee divides England from Wales and all of the principal buildings and fortifications within the city are listed and numbered. Chester was founded by the Romans, serving legion that was posted there to ward off the Celtic Welsh as an important harbour and defensive position. Following the withdrawal of the Romans, the Anglo-Saxons extended the walls in order to protect the city against incursions by the Danes.

SICHEM, Christoffel II van.
1581. 800, [4] pp.First and only edition of a Catholic devotional book on the life of Christ (in 5 numbered parts), the works of the Apostles, saints' lives, and religious emblems, perhaps the most richly illustrated woodcut book of the 17th century, with almost 700 woodcuts by Van Sichem, when one includes the 7 large ornamental woodcuts with putti, beasts, insects and flowers. Van Sichem may also have cut the numerous woodcut decorated initials with biblical figures, appearing mostly in the works of the Apostles. The book's title may have been influenced by an otherwise unrelated work published in the previous year, Den schat der zielen, an unillustrated translation of a work apparently first written in Catalan by Miguel Comalada, which saw later editions as well. The present work is built entirely around Van Sichem's extraordinary woodcuts. Christoffel van Sichem (ca. 1581-1658), the second and most important of four artists of that name, was one of the greatest woodblock cutters of the Dutch golden age. With owner's signature on endleaf. With the outer edge of the woodcut on the "Bosch der eremyten" title-page slightly shaved, a few mostly marginal tears, the largest in the gutter margin of 1 leaf repaired, slightly affecting the border, and a smaller one slightly affecting 1 woodcut, and a few leaves somewhat thumbed, smudged or spotted, but still generally in good condition. A famous and popular Catholic devotional work, with nearly 700 Van Sichem woodcuts.l Hollstein XXVII, p. 51 (no. 52); Poortman, Bijbel en Prent 48; STCN (8 copies, incl. at least 2 incomplete); c … [Click Below for Full Description]
