BÜNTING, Heinrich
Magdeburg: (1581). 315 x 380 mm., with wide margins.; This double-page wood engraved map of Europe is in the form of a virgin. It is one of the earliest cartographic curiosities published. It is found in the 1581 work by Heinrich Bünting entitled 'Itinerarium Sacrae Scripturae' published in Magdeburg. It was the first book devoted to the geography and history of the Holy Land. The map was first produced by Joannes Bucius in 1537. It is designed with the west at the top with Spain as a crowned head. Italy is is represented by the right arm with Sicily cleverly placed in the orb, Denmark the left one. Eastern Europe forms the dress. It has been suggested that the image in fact represents not a woman, but the Emperor Charles V. It draws on the fact that the image might in fact represent the Imperial power of Spain that was at the time the 'crown of Europe'. The Sceptre reaches the British Isles.Bünting was born in Hannover, Germany, in 1545 and studied at Wittenberg University. He became a pastor at Gronau and noted Protestant theologian. It is famous also for his clover leaf image of the world and the continent of Asia depicted as Pegasus. The book is his most famous work and is in fact one of the rarest despite running to a number of editions in different languages. At least two further new blocks were produced in 1595 and in 1610. This is an example of the first. A series of explanatory verses appears below. Van der Heijden 'De Oudste Gedruckte Kaarten van Europa' no. 42; Hill 'Cartographical Curiosities' p. 39; Map Collectors Circle 1 no. 2; Tooley Map Collector Collations … [Click Below for Full Description]

FROUMENTEAU (Nicolas)
- S.l., 1581. 3 parties reliées en un volume in-8, plein veau brun de l’époque, dos à nerfs orné garni de compartiments dorés aux petits fers et d’un fleuron central à froid répété, tranches mouchetées, (56) p. titre inclus, 152 p. ; 472 p. titre inclus et (1) f. de titre, (6), 439 p. (i.e. 435) p. Seconde édition publiée la même année que l'originale, très largement augmentée par rapport à celle-ci éditée sous le titre de ‘Les secrets des thrésors de la France’. "Premier essai méthodique de statistique de l'histoire" (Baudrillart), l'ouvrage constitue une source fondamentale sur les conséquences financières, politiques et sociales des Guerres de Religion (1550-1580). Pour chacun des quatre-vingt-dix diocèses français, l'auteur fournit les statistiques des impôts royaux, rançons, rapines de la soldatesque, entretien des troupes, finances ecclésiastiques, villages ou bâtiments incendiés ou détruits, massacres collectifs ou exécutions, viols, clercs assassinés, nobles et soldats tués, etc. Ce constat, qui aurait été dressé à la demande des états de Blois - selon l’aveu même de l'auteur dans sa préface -, contribua à mobiliser l’opinion sur l’ampleur des désastres occasionnés. Rédigé par un protestant français et publié sous ce pseudonyme de Froumenteau, l’essai a été parfois attribué à Nicolas Barnaud. (Adams, F-1084. Einaudi, 5204. Haag, 'France protestante', VI, 747. London: Imprinted by Christopher Barker, 1581. Small 8vo (14.5 cm; 5.75"). [98] ff. Nicholls (1555–84?) was educated at Brasenose but did not take a degree. Instead, he left upon completion of his course work and returned to his native Glamorgan, Wales, where he soon obtained a curacy. In 1577 he left his position, gave up his allegiance to the Church of England, travelled to Rome, and voluntarily submitted himself to the => Inquisition where he formally recanted his Protestantism. He was welcomed warmly into the Roman Catholic Church, and in 1580 was back in England. He was arrested in Islington, London, sent to the Tower, recanted his Catholicism, became an informer denouncing various Catholics of his acquaintance. His allegiance changed yet again in 1582, in Rouen, where he recanted his most previous recantation and was => very cautiously received back in the Church of Rome. Death came soon after. "Nicholls died on the continent in want and, probably, depression, most likely in 1584. He has been condemned by biographers for his want of constancy in what are assumed to be genuine, if bewildering, changes of faith and profession. Yet it may have been the case that there was a kind of cynical consistency in his animal sense of self-preservation, one actively encouraged by the systems of religious repression and polarization under which he managed for a while to operate with some success" (ODNB). => He was clearly one of the most troubled figures in the history of Recusancy. CORROZET, Gilles;BONFONS, Nicolas;
Bon exemplaire. Très rare. Reliure modeste du XVIIIe siècle, titre un … [Click Below for Full Description]
