Strassburg, B. Jobin, 1579. Folio (302 x 200mm). pp. (12), 643, (1), (34), title with attractive woodcut border and text printed in red and black, 1 large woodcut portrait and 30 large woodcuts in the text. Contemporary calf, spine with 4 raised bands. Very scarce first German edition of this famous work on agriculture, gardening, cattle raising, as well as hunting and hawking. Chapters XLV, XLVI and XLVII concern falconry. The work was first published as 'Praedium rusticum' 1554 by Carolus Stephanus (French Charles Estienne). An amazingly popular French version 'L'agriculture et maison rustique' was first published in Paris 1564, translated by his son-in-law, Jean Liébault, it became a Renaissance bestseller with at least 80 editions by the fall of Napoleon. The work was translated into the English, German, Dutch, Italian and Scandinavian languages. It is a veritable encyclopedia of country living, with large sections on orchards and fruit. Charles Estienne belonged to the famous dynasty of Parisian printers, he was however a poor businessman and died imprisoned in 1561 at the Châtelet. The fine woodcuts are after Tobias Stimmer, J. Amman among others probably cut by the printer Bernard Jobin himself. The work consists of seven parts: 1.

Brunet II, 484. GLN-2729. Guaita . Caillet 2778. *-------*. In-8. Collation : 160 pp. Maroquin vert, dos à nerfs orné, encadrements dorés sur les plats, tranches dorées. (Reliure du XIXe.).

Castello S. Angelo Con La Girandola

1579. "Acquaforte e bulino, 1579, firmata e datata in lastra in basso a destra ""Io. Ambr. Bram. "Etching and engraving, 1579, signed et dated on the plate, at bottom right, ""Io. Ambr. Bram. Inv et fe. 1579"". Magnificent proof, rich in tones and contrast, printed on contemporary laid paper, with watermark ""anchor in the circle with star"", wide margins, in excellent condition. The first edition of this work was published by Claudio Duchetti. The second state was published by Giovanni Orlandi; later his name was abraded, but still readable, and replaced by Henricus van Schoel. A broadside on the firework display called Girandola at the Castello Sant'Angelo in Rome; with an engraving showing a nocturnal scene, in the background the castle, from three of its towers fireworks and smoke developing, in the middle ground the river Tiber and a bridge, in the foreground further fireworks and a crowd of spectators, at the bottom a coat-of-arms; with engraved text in three columns, wanting the engraved title. Since 1471, a firework display called the 'Girandola' was held at the Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome, the papal fortress (originally built as a mausoleum for the Roman Emperor Hadrian). The firework display was sponsored by the papacy and held when a new pope was elected or crowned, at Easter, and on 28 June (the eve of the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul)." Huelsen 127.         Goritiae Karstii, Chaczeolae, Carniolae, Histriae, Et Windorvm Marchae Descrip.

Interior in very good condition with only very mild signs of foxing. Very Rare ! Sir Thomas North (15351604) was an English justice of the peace, military officer and translator. His translation into English of Plutarch's Parallel Lives is notable for being a source text used by William Shakespeare for several of his plays. The first edition of his translation of Plutarch, from the French of Jacques Amyot, appeared in 1579. The first edition was dedicated to Queen Elizabeth, and was followed by another edition in 1595, containing fresh Lives. A third edition of his Plutarch was published, in 1603, with more translated Parallel Lives, and a supplement of other translated biographies. According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica Eleventh Edition, " it is almost impossible to overestimate the influence of North's vigorous English on contemporary writers, and some critics have called him the first master of English prose." The Lives translation formed the source from which Shakespeare drew the materials for his Julius Caesar, Coriolanus, and Antony and Cleopatra. It is in the last-named play that he follows the Lives most closely, whole speeches being taken directly from North.

Parma: S. Vitto, 1579. First edition "of a rare book of considerable chemical interest containing over fifty inventions and secrets on gunpowder formulations, weapons, mechanical devices, and surveying methods. Many inventions relate to the art of war, but others are for industrial as well as leisure purposes. Most remarkable are recipes for making fireworks for military and festive use. The unusual strong cutting of the blocks (three signed C.R. by the blockcutter) is considered by Mortimer to be similar to that used in the figures in Thesaurus artificiosae memoriae (Venice, 1579), by Cosma Rosselio… "Isacchi (1536?-after 1596), an engineer of Reggio, was in charge of the decorations for festivities in Bologna, Mantua, Novellara, and Reggio. In 1596 he became the chief of artillery for Duke Alfonso of Mantua."-Neville, I, p. 682. Other inventions are a surveying instrument shaped like a dagger and an interesting telegraphic device, a heliograph worked with mirrors. This is an uncommon book. J.E. Hodgkin commented in his Rariora (1902), III, p. 8-"This is in some respects one of the most remarkable books on fireworks I possess. I have never seen another copy, nor is the book described in any work I have consulted." Signature dated 1742 of "Soranzo" on free front-endpaper. Another early signature at foot of title. ?         Les Oeuvres poétiques.

Paris, Mamert Patisson 1579 - In-12 de (4) ff., 309 ff., (11) ff. tables, caractères italiques. Plein vélin ivoire à recouvrement, dos lisse, tranches jaspées. Reliure de l’époque. 141 x 82 mm. Statutes and ordinances of the Senate of Venice: legal collection, 14th-16th century, compiled under the doge Nicolò da Ponte. Venice ("data in nostro Ducali Palatio"), 11 June 1579 ("indictione septima").

1579. 4to (230 x 160 mm). Latin and Italian manuscript on vellum. 80 numbered ff., 21 lines. Headings and highlighted words in red; ruled throughout. Contemp. auburn calf, covers and spine elaborately gilt; all edges gilt; giltstamped supralibros "Iacobo Priolo" and date "MDLXXVIIII" on the covers. Wants ties. Interesting manuscript on the constitutional and legal history of the Venetian state, with many decrees regulating commerce, drafted in the age of the merchant-traveller Gasparo Balbi and of Venice's great trade relationship with the Middle East. The clean and well-legible manuscript, written in the classical humanist chancery style, was obviously prepared for members of the senate (signed at the end by the secretary, Giulio Zamberti, with the scribe's monogram). The decrees are in chronological order, rater than arranged by subject. The earliest dated decree is from the year 1351, but most date from the mid-16th century. The edicts regulated public life of the Venetian state, including civil servants' salaries, matters of commerce and trade, offices, criminal law, banishment, etc. The first leaf bears the dedication by the doge Nicolò da Ponte (in office 1578-85) to Jacopo Priuli, a member of one of the foremost modern-age families of Venetian patricians (producing two doges in the 16th century). The familiy, ennobled as early as 1297 and one of the richest in Venice, is also known for its patronage of the arts, commissioning several Tintoretto portraits. As a member of the senate, Jacopo would have been entitled to a private copy of the statues. The high quality of the binding with its rich arabesque ornamentation and wide ornamental borders on the covers reflects on the importance of the patron family. - Engraved bookplate of Amadeo Svayer (Gottlieb Schweyer, 1727-91), a Venice-based German merchant and bibliophile who had assembled a huge and select library which after his death was almost entirely integrated into St Mark's library.

No place or printer, 1579.

1579. 4to. 8 ff. With full-page woodcut portrait of Martin Luther. With full-page woodcut portrait of Martin Luther on recto of final leaf. Bound in modern boards using a 17th century liturgical leaf. Extremely rare first edition of this defence of the Flacians, an orthodox offshoot of Lutheran thought (also known as "Gnesio-Lutherans"), whose founder Matthias Flacius rejected any development of Luther's doctrine after the reformer's death. The present copy contains an evidently integral full-page woodcut of Luther lacking in other recorded copies, including that digitized in the BSB. - Flacius (1520-75) settled at the University of Wittenberg in 1541, where he studied under Luther and Melanchthon. He later came to oppose vocally Melanchthon's conciliation to Catholicism known as the 'Leipzig Interim', earning him the enmity of that figure. The author of the present work, Flacius's disciple Haubold (1535-79), had also studied at Wittenberg beginning in 1556 before taking up a post in Saxony in 1562. Persecuted by August, Elector of Saxony, for his religious beliefs, Haubold fled first to Weimar, then to Regensburg, and finally to Klagenfurt. - Although evidently the integral final leaf of the second signature, the portrait found in the present copy is lacking in the handful of other recorded copies of this work. It is of interest for presenting the Protestant leader at a clearly advanced age, his face lined with wrinkles, his nose almost exaggeratedly large, and his head uncovered to reveal unruly curls: an effigy near the end of his lifetime. We have not traced its use in any other published work. - Small dampstain to lower blank margin throughout; small wormhole mainly confined to outer blank margin but just touching one or two letters on the final leaves, as well as the shoulder of Dr. Luther; plain ruled border of portrait trimmed with loss. VD 16 suggests a collation of just 7 leaves and shows a handful of copies; OCLC confirms no copy in American libraries. No copies (with or without the portrait) recorded at German or American auctions of the last 50 years. VD 16, H 768 (7 ff. only; wants portrait). BM-STC German 384. Holzmann/Bohatta I, 5574 ("1573" in error). Not in Adams. On the author cf. the ADB.
