HAY, John.
Cordier, Japonica, cols. 246-248; Palau 112581; Sabin 31016. First edition, in Latin, of a very important collection of about 55 letters and other documents written between 1577 and 1601, the largest part concerning Jesuit activities in Japan, with a smaller but substantial part devoted to Korea, several concerning China and India and single items concerning the missions in Peru, Mexico and the Philippines. It was compiled by John Hay (1546-1607), who translated some of the items himself and added prefaces to some.Included are some rare accounts written by Japanese Christians, such as Michael Chijiwa Seizayemon, Sanico Nobuaki, Protasius, the Daimyo of Omura, the Daimyo of Arima and others. There are several accounts by the Jesuit missionary Luís Frois, including an extensive letter on Japan and a letter from Nagasaki. Also included is a short general history of Japan. The letters and reports give a general overview of Jesuit mission activities, especially in the 1590s.With ownership stamps on the back of the title-page and the first back endpaper. Binding soiled but still good.Browned throughout, especially the title page, and somewhat soiled in the margins. Endpapers at the back with a large water stain and some holes. Lacking 3S4 (blank) and 3T1-3T2, the latter two present in facsimile. A fair copy.

[Jamblique]

(2), 68, (2) pp. With a woodcut portrait (dated 1577) of the author at the age of 38 on the title-page and 6 woodcuts in the text, each showing 4 allegorical illustrations. Contemporary limp vellum, spine recently reinforced, endleaves renewed, small marginal stains in the first and last three leaves, uniformly slightly browned throughout, old repair in the lower outer corner of the title-page not affecting the text, a good, genuine copy.VERY RARE FIRST EDITION containing sixty-one 'canzonelle alla napolitana' presented in sequence without music. If separate music fascicles were published, no copies of it are known to have survived. As in his other publications, each of the pieces in the Opera nuova is dedicated to individual women. The choices here show him to have been well connected to some of the most prominent Lyonnais families including the Buonvisi, merchants from Lucca (cf. F. Dobbins, Lyons: Commercial and Cultural Metropolis, in: "The Renaissance. From 1470 to the End of the 16th Century", I. Fenlon, ed., London, 1989, p. 210). At the end are printed the Passioni amorose, a series of quatrains accompanied by allegorical woodcuts."Si sa della diffusione del repertorio canzonettistico [di Fiorino], in alcune regioni dell'Europa occidentale, già dagli anni sessanta e, poi, sopratutto nel decennio successivo; e appunto a Lione, nel 1577, il musicista calabrese pubblica le canzonelle alla napoletana del volume che egli intitola Opera nuova chiamata la fama. Holinshed, Raphael.
- Illustrated with 212 woodcuts used multiple times. Thick 4to. Each volume rebacked, retaining the leather on the spines and in the center panels of the first volume. London 1577. First Edition. 2 volumes. Each volume is in a scarce single state of the first edition, as most extant copies are made up from multiple issues from the various members of the stationers consortium responsible for the final publication. The first volume printed by John Hunne, the second by Harrison. The Holinshed Chronicles stand as a landmark of early English publishing for its extensive use of illustrations. While the “Description” sections is without illustration, the “Histories” contain 212 unique woodcuts. Constituting one of the most complete, early accounts of medieval England, The Holinshed Chronicles is a monument of English language publishing. Shakespeare, along with Marlowe and other playwrights of the day, used the Chronicles as a source for history plays. The plot of Macbeth, and portions of King Lear and Cymbeline are sourced from the Chronicles. Shakespeare also used it as a primary source for the historical events of Henry V. Covering history from the Roman era to the time of publication. NICOLAY, Nicolas de
Guillaume Silvius, 1577. 4to. pp. (xxiv) 305 [ie 388] (xxxii). Roman letter, occasional Italic, prefatory epistle in Civilité. Small woodcut printer's device on title, title within typographical border, historiated woodcut initials and typographical ornaments, 60 full page woodcut plates within typographical borders. Slight age-yellowing, some mostly marginal spotting on first and last few leaves, small single worm hole in blank upper margin of thirty ll., the odd spot or thumb mark. A very good, clean copy in C19 English calf, gilt oval armorial device of the Society of writers to the Signet at centers of covers, spine with gilt ruled raised bands, rebacked with original spine laid down. Excellent edition of this seminal and beautifully illustrated work by Nicolay, a detailed account of his travels to the Near East illustrated with sixty spirited full-length portraits of male and female figures of all ages and ranks in local costume. It was first published in Lyons in 1568, with copperplates engraved by Louis Danet from Nicolay's original drawings [two reproduced in Mortimer-Harvard Fr. 386]. According to Mortimer, Nicolay's illustrations are 'the first to represent the costume of the Near East in detail', and were widely copied in the C16th; this edition is illustrated with fine woodcuts by Antonij van Leest, whose initials appear in the first and other plates, after those of the first edition. Dedicated by Nicolay to Charles IX, whom Nicolay served as Valet de chambre and géographe ordinaire, it also contains a long "Elegie" by Ronsard addressed to Nicolay, and a letter … [Click Below for Full Description]
