MONTE, Guidobaldo, Marchese del
Pesaro, Girolamo Concordia, 1577. Folio (326 x 224 mm), ff [8, including blank] 131, without terminal blank, printed correction slip pasted on X2, text within rule borders, 265 woodcut diagrams and illustrations in text; a few minor stains to title, some light and mostly marginal waterstaining in the final gatherings, three leaves with marginal tears with old paper repairs, stubs suggesting that there were originally two further endleaves at front and back, overall a very attractive, fresh, unpressed, and large copy, with several deckle edges showing, in contemporary Spanish limp vellum, spine with bold MS lettering ‘Mechanicor. Guidi. Ubald[i]’, with old paper label at foot of spine and shelf-mark ‘I.B.I.G.’, bookplate removed from front pastedown at one time and covered with old paper. First edition, and a prime document relating to Spain’s first academy of science. The Mechanicorum is the most important treatise on mechanics since Archimedes and a work which exerted considerable influence on Guidobaldo’s friend and disciple Galileo. This copy has intriguing contemporary annotations related to the Real Academia de Matemáticas de Madrid, Spain’s first academy of sciences: the extensive marginalia and corrections to text and diagrams represent the teaching text of the Academy’s Professor of Mathematics, Julio Cesar Ferrufino (ca 1535-1604), written in a Spanish hand (see below). Stillman Drake, in his extensive discussion of this work, writes that ‘his Mechanics was the first truly systematic attempt at a rigorous treatment of the field, and it paved the way for Galileo’s s … [Click Below for Full Description]

George BRAUN (1541 - 1622) & Abraham HOGENBERG (1578 - 1653) / Joris HOEFNAGEL (1542 - 1601), Antwerp, 1581, Copper engraving with full original hand colour (Very Good, excellent original colour, very minor toning and creasing to centerfold), 40.5 x 53 cm (16 x 21 inches).
- This highly decorative tableau features scenes around Lake Agnano, Campania, surrounded by sumptuous Mannerist strapwork borders. Lake Agnano is a volcanic crater lake located just outside of Naples. Its unusual natural attributes had long made it a point of curiosity and it was often included on Italian itineraries for foreign travellers. The lake was surrounded by ancient Roman ruins and strange caves. From 1577 to 1578, the famed Flemish cartographer Abraham Ortelius and the great artist Joris Hoefnagel toured Italy together. In the upper roundel of the composition, Ortelius and Hoefnagel are shown together as they overlook the lake. To the left is the Cave of Sibyl, while to the right are the ruins of the Temple of Apollo. In the lower roundel is a view of the nearby Grotto del Cana, a cave filled with carbonic acid vapors that could render one unconscious after a few minutes. Lake Agnano remained a poplar tourist attraction until it was drained in 1870. The present view was engraved by Joris Hoefnagel and appeared within Georg Braun & Frans Hogenberg’s legendary townbook, Civitates Orbis Terrarum, specifically within volume III of the 6-part work, published in 1581. Abraham Ortelius (1527-98) is widely hailed as the ‘The Father of Modern Cartography,’ being the compiler of the first modern atlas, the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (meaning ‘Theatre of the World’), first issued in Antwerp in 1570. Ortelius was a shrewd businessman who went to great lengths to obtain the finest possible source maps and to engrave works of great artistic beauty and int … [Click Below for Full Description]

Amman, Jost/Weigel, Hans.
Nuremberg, Hans Weigel, 1577]. Folio (204 x 325 mm). 161 (instead of 220) hand-numbered woodcut plates in early 18th-century colour, mounted on backing paper and missing parts supplemented by hand. Later half calf with 18th-c. spine label. All edges sprinkled in red. First edition of Jost Amman's encyclopedic book of costumes. A strongly fragmented copy, as usual; in the early 19th century, the plates were mounted on backing paper by the owner, the trained landscape painter Jakob Linckh (1786-1841) from Stuttgart (cf. Thieme/B. 23, 254), who also coloured the volume throughout and supplemented all missing parts of the images and even of the text by hand. Linckh, who had studied in Rome, visited Greece in 1810. There he met Byron, who commissioned him to provide the illustrations for Hobhouse's travel book. - Wants 59 plates altogether; the remainder are trimmed closely at the upper edge, and most have severe defects in the lower half. Although the present collection begins with the plate showing the Emperor, as originally issued, the remaining woodcuts follow no apparent order. 20 plates show costumes of Turkey, Arabia, Persia, Egypt, and Ethiopia; others depict Greeks, Russians, and Englishmen. 28 plates show the costumes of today's Italy; German cities are well represented, as are France and Spain, Bohemia and Hungary. Also includes the famous picture of the Brazilian Tupinamba Indians: a man with a crown and belt of feathers, a knife, and a bow and arrow, beside a long-haired woman carrying a baby in a knotted sling. The illustration is an adaptation of two cuts from the … [Click Below for Full Description]
