Hendrick GOLTZIUS (Mulbrecht 1559 - Haarlem 1617)
1577. "Serie completa di 4 incisioni al bulino, 1577 circa. Da disegni Jan van der Straet, lat. Johannes Stradanus. Essa infatti suonerà e i morti risorgono incorruttibili e noi saremo trasformati"". " … [Click Below for Full Description]

Arrian of Nicomedia; Io Guilielmo Stuckio.
Classical Authors: Genevæ- Geneva/ Lugduni- Lyon Euststhium Vignon / Bartholemæum Vincentium. 1577. Classical Authors: Genevæ- Geneva/ Lugduni- Lyon Euststhium Vignon / Bartholemæum Vincentium. 1577. [4] map[8] pp109 [12.]Blank; &: [8][10] pp109 [2][6]. First separate edition of works attributed to Arrian of Nicodemia which appeared simultaneously at Geneva and Lyons in 1577 with the translation and commentary of Johann Wilhem Stucki. This example has the Geneva imprint of the Ponti Euxini and the Lyons imprint of the Maris Erythræi. The texts of both works were first published by Froben in 1533 in the anthology Arriani & Hannonis periplus. Plutarchus de fluminibus & montibus. Strabonis epitome. The woodcut map of the Black Sea is the first printed map of the sea, it is decorated with ships, monsters and mermen. The Peripilus Ponti Euxini takes the form of a letter, from Arrian to the Emperor Hadrian in Rome, who was particularly attached to geographical research and had visited in person a large portion of his extensive dominions. It contains an accurate topographical survey of the coasts of the Euxine (Black Sea), from Trapezus to Byzantium, and was written probably while Arrian held his office of legate of Cappadocia, a short time before war broke out against the Alani; and it was doubtless at the same time that he drew up his instructions for the march of the Roman army against the barbarians, which are found in a short but imperfect fragment annexed to the Techne Taktika, written, as he states himself, in the twentieth year of the reign of the emperor, and co … [Click Below for Full Description]

DIONYSIOS PERIEGETES - Pomponius MELA - (Pseudo-)AETHICUS - SOLINUS.
(Genève), Henricus Stephanus 1577. 4to. (4) lvs., 158 pp., (8) lvs.; (4) lvs., 47 pp., (1) p. (blank); 152 pp. Printer's device. Contemporary flexible vellum (browned, soiled, tear to spine) with spine label. In 1547 a Dionysius-Edition appeared in Paris under Robert Estienne, which in this edition was considerably expanded by his son; thus in the combination with Mela and Solinus first edition (the Eustathius-Text first appeared in the R. Estienne edition of 1547, the cosmography of Aethicus, a pseudonym, is more commonly found together with the Dionysius work). Dionysios Periegetes came from Alexandria and wrote his Orbis descriptio at the time of Hadrian. This geographical work in verse form was widely read up until the 19th century, The high regard that it was held in in the Middle Ages is seen, for example, through the extensive commentary provided by Eustathius. In the middle of the first century after Christ, Pomponius Mela wrote what is the oldest extant Roman geographical work; this was intensively adopted during the early renaissance (Boccaccio, Petrarca). The Cosmography, issued under the name of Aethicus is probably the work of a writer of the 8th century, and who was close to the court historiographers of the early Carolingian period. Solinus (3. A.D.) compiled a collection of peculiarities very similar to that of Plinius. Free end-paper with hand-written entries. Slightly browned throughout, the outer margins minor stained. Provenance: Laßberg library; Court Library Donaueschingen. Renouard/Est. 145, 5; Hoffmann I, 592; Schweiger I, 101; Adams D 648; IA 154.29 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Brescia: F. & P.M. de Marchetti, 1577. First edition of this notable and early work on pediatrics, with five charming engravings in the text, including one of an infant learning to walk using a four-sided wheeled "walker," another of a child being toilet trained, and another of a woman using a breast pump. "[Ferrari] refers to the inadequacy of earlier writings and proposes to deal with the subject in more detail…In his introductory remarks Ferrarius makes the suggestion that a baby from the day of its birth should be placed under the supervision of a man trained in the art of preserving health: a step towards the modern Infant Welfare scheme… "The three parts of his book deal with the management of the nurse and her milk, the care and feeding of the new-born, and diseases of children. He keeps very close to the Greek and Arabian writers…He subdivides skin diseases to a greater degree, and introduces a chapter on burns, a subject which figures frequently in books on affections of children during this and the next two centuries… "His book is illustrated…he figures an appliance for preventing the child from injuring its head…Ferrarius was by no means inclined to regard either moral or physical influences as outside the scope of the physicians."-Still, The History of Paediatrics, pp. 147-51. [Amman, Jost/Weigel, Hans.
1577. Folio (204 x 325 mm). 161 (instead of 220) hand-numbered woodcut plates in early 18th-century colour, mounted on backing paper and missing parts supplemented by hand. Later half calf with 18th-c. spine label. All edges sprinkled in red. First edition of Jost Amman's encyclopedic book of costumes. A strongly fragmented copy, as usual; in the early 19th century, the plates were mounted on backing paper by the owner, the trained landscape painter Jakob Linckh (1786-1841) from Stuttgart (cf. Thieme/B. 23, 254), who also coloured the volume throughout and supplemented all missing parts of the images and even of the text by hand. Linckh, who had studied in Rome, visited Greece in 1810. There he met Byron, who commissioned him to provide the illustrations for Hobhouse's travel book. - Wants 59 plates altogether; the remainder are trimmed closely at the upper edge, and most have severe defects in the lower half. Although the present collection begins with the plate showing the Emperor, as originally issued, the remaining woodcuts follow no apparent order. 20 plates show costumes of Turkey, Arabia, Persia, Egypt, and Ethiopia; others depict Greeks, Russians, and Englishmen. 28 plates show the costumes of today's Italy; German cities are well represented, as are France and Spain, Bohemia and Hungary. Cornelis CORT (Hoorn, nr Alkmaar, 1533 - Roma, prima del 22 Aprile 1578)
Engraving, 1577, signed and dated at lower center. After Jacopo Zanguidi called Bertoja. Example of the second state of four with the address of the publisher Lorenzo Vaccari. A fine impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the platemark, in very god conditions. The work translates a lost painting of Bertoja, as described by De Grazia. Previously, the erroneous attribution, had traced the work after a painting by Jacopo Palma. Manfred Sellink describes a single copy of the first state, in Berlin, that was lost during the Second World War. The New Hollstein, II, p. 145, 113 II/IV; TIB 52, 131; Witcombe, Print Publishing in Sixteenth - Century Rome, p. 343, 5.37. 378 250
