(BINDINGS - JOBST KALHART). PERSIUS FLACCUS, AULUS
Basel: Peter Perna, 1578; Rostock: Jacob Lucius, 1576. This volume containing two rare classical editions was beautifully decorated by an eminent binder with exquisite stamps and rolls that remain in remarkably sharp relief more than four centuries later. The Oxford Companion remarks favorably on the six satires of the first century playwright Persius, noting their "elevated moral tone, with occasional passages of genial humor, and forcible graphic expression, showing the poet's keen observation of life." The second work here is a scarce edition of Terence's "Adelphi," an exploration of the merits of strict versus liberal child rearing. The play is considered Terence's masterpiece, and it inspired later dramas, including Moliere's "School for Husbands." Our binding's lovely panels and rolls depicting the Virtues are the creation of Bavarian binder Jobst Kalhart, who wed the widow of Lauingen bookbinder Balthasar Werner in 1576, and took over the bindery, continuing in business until the early 1600s. He was one of the binders who did work for bibliophile Pfalzgraf Philipp Ludwig von Neuburg (1547-1616). The stamps here are extremely well preserved, due in part to the method of creating panel-stamped bindings. Needham notes that "binders' panels, or dies were engraved in metal. They were stamped not by hand, but by a screw press. This provided considerably greater pressure than hand-stamping (such as used for small tools) could do, and panel-stamping over wooden boards often provides very sharp detail and firm reliefs." ("Twelve Centures of Bookbindings," p. 92) That is cert … [Click Below for Full Description]

(sign.

SCOT (or SCOTT), Reginald
1576. Numerous woodcut illus. in the text. Largely printed in black letter. 7 p.l. (first leaf blank except for signature mark), 63, [1] pp. Small 4to, early 20th cent. polished mottled calf by Riviere, triple gilt fillet round sides, spine richly gilt, red morocco lettering pieces on spine, dentelles gilt, a.e.g. London: H. Denham, 1576. Second edition, "nowe newly corrected and augmented," of the first English book on hops. The first edition appeared two years earlier; both editions are very rare. This is "an eminently practical treatise, illustrating the various methods of setting the roots, making the hills and ramming the poles, tying the bine, and its pulling up and preservation, with a number of curious cuts. It was the work of a practical man, written for practical men, and in this respect is far in advance of most of Scot's contemporaries, who were still much interested in the superstitions of the time, and the traditional pseudo-science of the Middle Ages."-Fussell, I, p. 12. Clinch, in his English Hops, a History of Cultivation and Preparation for the Market from the Earliest Times (1919), states that in many respects "the information is as useful today as it was nearly three-and-a-half centuries ago when it was published." Scot (d. 1599), is most famous for his The Discoverie of Witchcraft (1584), in which he attacked the general belief in witchcraft and other forms of credulity and superstition, including astrology, alchemy, and Catholicism. For more on Scot and his fascinating life, see ODNB. Fine copy. Signature of T. Barling on first leaf. ? Henrey, I, p. 64 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Four parts in one volume *** By Martin Chemnitz *** In German language *** Rare first edition of Lutheran theology printed between 1566 and 1573. The work had ten more editions until the end of the century, and numerous reprints later, the last, dating from 1861. This edition was printed in Frankfurt in 1576. If Martin Luther is considered the greatest theologian of the Lutheran Church, then Martin Chemnitz is without a doubt our second greatest Lutheran Father. Chemnitz is certainly deserving of the title "the Second Martin", and was the primary bulwark of orthodox Lutheran theology in the latter part of the sixteenth century. Text printed in two columns. Title printed in red and black with a woodcut vignette by Jost Ammann (repeated twice) and with the printer's device on the title-page of Part II. *** Frankfurt, Georg Rab, 1576. *** Pp.: (I:) (12, including one blank), 172, (6) leaves; (II:) (6), 220, (8) leaves; (III:) (8), 176, (8) leaves; (IV:) (12), 130, (8) leaves *** Binding: Contemporary leather binding with blindstamped panels, five raised bands, clamps missing, sticker on the spine cover, signs of wear on the panels and along the edges, some parts damaged and stained, hinges slightly loose. Quarto (216 x 158 mm). Contemporary vellum, spine lettered in gilt on red panel, blue edges. Title with woodcut authorial emblem. Vellum rather soiled, title page with a number of early inscriptions struck through, 19th- and early 20th-century ownership inscriptions to front blank, light marginal waterstain to last few gatherings, still a very good copy. Second edition of the most famous Italian Renaissance commentary on Aristotle's Poetics, expanded from the first edition printed at Vienna by Gaspar Stainhofer in 1570. Castelvetro's independent-minded commentary quickly stimulated controversy and contributed to the widespread adoption of a tight conception of the three unities of action, place, and time as an aesthetic standard that helped to set the critical norms for Renaissance and neoclassical drama. Although English playwrights tended to disregard them, the unities continued to dominate French drama long afterwards, until the Romantic era. The fact that in his 1765 preface to his edition of Shakespeare, Samuel Johnson was still defending Shakespeare for his disregard of the supposedly Aristotelian unities was principally due to Castelvetro.

Frankfurt: A. Wechel, 1576. First Latin Edition. THE RETURN OF MARTIN GUERRE -- THE VERY RARE FIRST LATIN EDITION OF THE JUDGE'S FIRST-HAND ACCOUNT OF A SENSATIONAL SIXTEENTH-CENTURY TRIAL FOR IDENTITY THEFT; THE BASIS OF NUMEROUS LITERARY, DRAMATIC, AND CINEMATIC ADAPTATIONS. This case had everything -- an unhappy marriage, a sudden disappearance and a mysterious return, an accusation of impersonation, a possibly complicit wife, a family and a village divided, two dramatic trials, the sudden appearance of a surprise witness at a moment in the second trial when acquittal seemed imminent, a sudden reversal of fortune, the defendant's conviction, his public apology (declaring the wife to be an innocent victim), and his execution in front of the home of the man he impersonated. It is scarcely surprising that the case has inspired, among other things, an essay by Montaigne and one by Leibniz, a novel by Dumas, a short story by Philip K. Dick, an opera, two fine films (a French one starring Gerard Depardieu and an American one transposing the action to the Civil War, starring Richard Gere and Jodie Foster), at least two musicals, and countless historical novels and radio and television episodes. In 1548, Martin Guerre, a French peasant living in the village of Artigat in the département of Ariège, stole a small amount of grain and as a result was forced into exile. This turn of events was doubly tragic for Guerre, because he had just conceived a son after eight years of impotence attributed by him and his young wife Bertrande to an evil spell (maléficiez), and he now had to aban … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bechstein, Ludwig, Schriftsteller und Bibliothekar (1801–1860).
O. O. u. D, 1576. 1 ¼ SS. Kl.-4to. [Click Below for Full Description]
