Martin Chemnitz
Frankfurt: Georg Rab, 1576. Please view item description for details. Examen Martin Chemnitz Erörterung 1756 Lutheranism Theology Catholic EXAMEN, das ist Erörterung De Trientischen Cocilij... Four parts in one volume *** By Martin Chemnitz *** In German language *** Rare first edition of Lutheran theology printed between 1566 and 1573. The work had ten more editions until the end of the century, and numerous reprints later, the last, dating from 1861. This edition was printed in Frankfurt in 1576. If Martin Luther is considered the greatest theologian of the Lutheran Church, then Martin Chemnitz is without a doubt our second greatest Lutheran Father. Chemnitz is certainly deserving of the title "the Second Martin", and was the primary bulwark of orthodox Lutheran theology in the latter part of the sixteenth century. Text printed in two columns. Title printed in red and black with a woodcut vignette by Jost Ammann (repeated twice) and with the printer's device on the title-page of Part II. *** Frankfurt, Georg Rab, 1576. *** Pp.: (I:) (12, including one blank), 172, (6) leaves; (II:) (6), 220, (8) leaves; (III:) (8), 176, (8) leaves; (IV:) (12), 130, (8) leaves *** Binding: Contemporary leather binding with blindstamped panels, five raised bands, clamps missing, sticker on the spine cover, signs of wear on the panels and along the edges, some parts damaged and stained, hinges slightly loose. ARISTOTLE
Quarto (216 x 158 mm). Contemporary vellum, spine lettered in gilt on red panel, blue edges. Title with woodcut authorial emblem. Vellum rather soiled, title page with a number of early inscriptions struck through, 19th- and early 20th-century ownership inscriptions to front blank, light marginal waterstain to last few gatherings, still a very good copy. Second edition of the most famous Italian Renaissance commentary on Aristotle's Poetics, expanded from the first edition printed at Vienna by Gaspar Stainhofer in 1570. Castelvetro's independent-minded commentary quickly stimulated controversy and contributed to the widespread adoption of a tight conception of the three unities of action, place, and time as an aesthetic standard that helped to set the critical norms for Renaissance and neoclassical drama. Although English playwrights tended to disregard them, the unities continued to dominate French drama long afterwards, until the Romantic era. The fact that in his 1765 preface to his edition of Shakespeare, Samuel Johnson was still defending Shakespeare for his disregard of the supposedly Aristotelian unities was principally due to Castelvetro.

DE CORAS, JEAN
A. Wechel, Frankfurt, 1576. THE RETURN OF MARTIN GUERRE - THE VERY RARE FIRST LATIN EDITION OF THE JUDGE'S FIRST-HAND ACCOUNT OF A SENSATIONAL SIXTEENTH-CENTURY TRIAL FOR IDENTITY THEFT; THE BASIS OF NUMEROUS LITERARY, DRAMATIC, AND CINEMATIC ADAPTATIONS. This case had everything - an unhappy marriage, a sudden disappearance and a mysterious return, an accusation of impersonation, a possibly complicit wife, a family and a village divided, two dramatic trials, the sudden appearance of a surprise witness at a moment in the second trial when acquittal seemed imminent, a sudden reversal of fortune, the defendant's conviction, his public apology (declaring the wife to be an innocent victim), and his execution in front of the home of the man he impersonated. It is scarcely surprising that the case has inspired, among other things, an essay by Montaigne and one by Leibniz, a novel by Dumas, a short story by Philip K. Dick, an opera, two fine films (a French one starring Gerard Depardieu and an American one transposing the action to the Civil War, starring Richard Gere and Jodie Foster), at least two musicals, and countless historical novels and radio and television episodes. In 1548, Martin Guerre, a French peasant living in the village of Artigat in the département of Ariège, stole a small amount of grain and as a result was forced into exile. This turn of events was doubly tragic for Guerre, because he had just conceived a son after eight years of impotence attributed by him and his young wife Bertrande to an evil spell (maléficiez), and he now had to abandon Bertrande and their … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bechstein, Ludwig, Schriftsteller und Bibliothekar (1801–1860).
O. O. u. D, 1576. 1 ¼ SS. Kl.-4to. [Click Below for Full Description]

Antonio LAFRERI (Salins, Giura 1512 - Roma 1577)
Engraving, 1576, dated in plate in the center. Example in the only known state. Magnificent proof, rich tone, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark "star and shield with letter M", with small margins, horizontal center fold, otherwise in perfect condition. The title page is decorated with an architectural frame in three registers whose central header. The composition of the work is similar to that made for the Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae, with respect to which, however, is more beautiful and full of pictures and captions. One of the three title pages that the publisher did make to collect and categorize his work. Work of incredible rarity. Bury, The Print in Italy, pp. 49/51, fig.2; Marigliani & Biguzzi, La Collezione Sacra della Bottega di Antonio Lafrery, pp. 39/41. Dimensioni 334x460 circa.

ARTÉMIDORE d'ÉPHÈSE
Nicolas Bonsons, Paris, 1576. Plein veau pastiche Un volume in-16 (116x70 mm), 89-(6)-49 feuillets .
[Click Below for Full Description]

[Mexico; archive of the Tlalmanalco hacienda].
A wonderful extensive Mexican colonial archive of the Mexican Hazienda San Joseph Tapalcapan y Tezoquipa, formed from over a period spanning almost two centuries: 1576 to 1712, illustrated with a double page manuscript map of the area -featuring a town-, preserved in its original binding, full of research potential. The volume presents us with a panorama of the social, economic, and agricultural history of Mexico in the first centuries of colonization and the adaptation of the natives to the incoming agricultural land-owning and land-managing system brought by the Spaniards. The archive is composed of various documents beginning with some dating from the earliest decades of Spanish settlement in Mexico and gathered, in the 18thcentury, into this one volume relating to the sale and management of estates and lands north of Tlalmanalco, the then capital of the Chalco region. As such it provides an invaluable source for the progress of the Spanish colonization of Mexicobeginning as it does with a mixture of the purchase of some lands from the native Amerindian population and the grant of others by the new Spanish colonial administration, namely by Lorenzo Suárez de Mendoza, Marquis of La Coruña (the fifth viceroy of New Spain) and ending in the eighteenth century with the sale of haciendas, an estate system introduced in the mid-seventeenth century to replace encomiendas. A striking illustrated map, which accompanies a deed dated 23 July 1698, shows the location of the Tapalcapán hacienda and the ownership of lands surrounding it including an area designate … [Click Below for Full Description]

DE CORAS, JEAN
Frankfurt: A. Wechel, 1576. First Latin Edition. THE RETURN OF MARTIN GUERRE -- THE VERY RARE FIRST LATIN EDITION OF THE JUDGE'S FIRST-HAND ACCOUNT OF A SENSATIONAL SIXTEENTH-CENTURY TRIAL FOR IDENTITY THEFT; THE BASIS OF NUMEROUS LITERARY, DRAMATIC, AND CINEMATIC ADAPTATIONS. This case had everything -- an unhappy marriage, a sudden disappearance and a mysterious return, an accusation of impersonation, a possibly complicit wife, a family and a village divided, two dramatic trials, the sudden appearance of a surprise witness at a moment in the second trial when acquittal seemed imminent, a sudden reversal of fortune, the defendant's conviction, his public apology (declaring the wife to be an innocent victim), and his execution in front of the home of the man he impersonated. This turn of events was doubly tragic for Guerre, because he had just conceived a son after eight years of impotence attributed by him and his young wife Bertrande to an evil spell (maléficiez), and he now had to aban … [Click Below for Full Description]
