Antonio LAFRERI (Orgelet 1512 - Roma 1577)
"Engraving, 1576, dated in plate in the center. Example in the only known state. Magnificent proof, rich tone, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark ""star and shield with letter M"", with small margins, horizontal center fold, otherwise in perfect condition. The title page is decorated with an architectural frame in three registers whose central header. The composition of the work is similar to that made for the Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae, with respect to which, however, is more beautiful and full of pictures and captions. One of the three title pages that the publisher did make to collect and categorize his work. Work of incredible rarity." Bury, The Print in Italy, pp. 49/51, fig.2; Marigliani & Biguzzi, La Collezione Sacra della Bottega di Antonio Lafrery, pp. 39/41. Dimensioni 334x460 circa.

Cornelis CORT (Hoorn, nr Alkmaar, 1533 - Roma, prima del 22 Aprile 1578)
Bulino, 1576, firmato e datato in lastra in basso a sinistra.
Dimensioni circa 292x215. Hollstein IV p. 190, 512-514; A. Baroni Vannucci, pp. 354 /355, 685, 7/12. The most important work Stradano produced for the Medicean tapestry was the realization of the cartoons for the 28 arrases cycle with hunting scenes, which were intended to be hung in the Poggio a Caiano Villa (1567). These engravings belong to the most ancient production after Stradano's drawings, realized by Hieronimus Cock.He had the farsightedness to understand that this work would have had great success, so he signed a contract with Stradano to have a considerable amount of drawings. Titus Lucretius Carus / Lukrez
Antonius Gryphius, 1576. [Click Below for Full Description]

'This was an attack on Ciceronianism, the cult of the usage of Cicero as the only correct Latin, and as such it contributed to an argument that had been going on since the second half of the 15th century. Ciceronianism had its own dictionary, that of Mario Nizzoli (Nizolius), which had first apeared as Observationes in Ciceronem in 1535, documenting approximately 20,000 words; 50 or more further editions appeared under various titles in the next hundred years. (.) The Ciceronians, Henri argued, condemn certain Latin usages which they suppose to be modern Gallicisms. So, for instance, they censure the use of pausa, supposing it to be a modern formation from French pause - but it is to be found in the ancient fragmentary poets Ennius and Lucilius; a number of examp … [Click Below for Full Description]

HAEFTEN, Benedictus van.
1576. XL, 404, [26], [2 blank] pp.First edition (first issue), the only edition in the original Latin, of a lovely devotional emblem book with an engraved title-page and 38 engraved emblems, all on the theme of the holy cross, all engraved by Cornelis Galle the elder (1576-1650), at least the title-page after a drawing by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1648). The history of the present copy is unusually interesting and well documented. The first documented owner was Jakob Adalbert Schrenk(1634-1674) best known as a composer of church music. The 1650 inscription on the title-page shows that when he was 15 or 16 he gave it to Gotthard Freyd, then also at Kremsmünster. The book found its way to the Abbot at Kremsmünster, Placidus Buechauer (1611-1669), who had it splendidly bound before his 1669 death. With water stains at the head of one quire and the half-title speckled with ink(?), but generally in very good condition. The binding shows a few small wormholes, minor cracks or small abrasions and lacks the ties, but is still very good, with the tooling well preserved.l Funck p. 328; Landwehr, Emblem books Low Countries 271; Praz, p. 361; STCV 6843143. Braun Georg (1541-1622) - Hogenberg Franz (1535-1590)
Bella coloritura antica all'acquarello. Carta vergellata con filigrana. Esemplare in ottimo stato di conservazione. Based on Sigismund von Herberstein's own 1547 map, it shows the city of Moscow from a slightly elevated viewpoint across the frozen Moskva River. The walled centre of the city is depicted with its many churches and rows of houses, and filled with people and horse-drawn sleighs, others of which are shown, along with skiers, on the river to the right. In the top left corner is the nicely adorned coat of arms of the city. In the foreground are depicted four armed Russian soldiers on horseback. The German caption above them indicates they are wearing the typical "Moscovite war armament". These graphically reflect the growing military power of Moscow under Grand Duke Ivan IV (Ivan the Terrible), who was the first to assume the title of Tsar of Russia and who established the city as the capital of the Grand Duchy of Russia in 1547, not long before this image was made. Next to the soldiers appear two types of cattle, typical for the region. The first one is the European bison and the right one the auroch, an extinct type of large wild cattle that inhabited Europe, Asia and North Africa.

Title printed in red and black with a woodcut vignette by Jost Ammann (repeated twice) and with the printer's device on the title-page of Part II. Contemporary blind-stamped calf, back with five raised bands, back panel with three small repairs (at the place of the clasps and part of the joint), clasps missing, old entries of ownership on the front fly-leaf, a few contemporary marginal annotations and underlining, otherwise a superb and genuine copy.RARE FIRST GERMAN EDITION. This evaluation and rebuttal of the decrees of the Council of Trent was originally published in Latin in four volumes between 1566 and 1573. The work had ten more editions until the end of the century, and numerous reprints later, the last, dating from 1861 (Berlin). The work had greater impact, greater readership, and brought Chemnitz greater fame than anything else he produced in his life."The preparation of the Examen absorbed Chemnitz' leisure for the next nine years. By the end of March 1565 he had worked out the first part sufficiently to send it to a colleague in Frankfurt/M., Martin Ritter, with the request to find a publisher. On Christmas Eve of that year Chemnitz was still reading proof and finding 'manifold and most horrible errors'. The following spring the first part came out, dedicated to Duke Albert Frederick [of Prussia], the youthful son of Duke Albert the E … [Click Below for Full Description]

Descrittione del Mappamondo.(World Map). Issued 1576, Venice, by Tomasso Porcacchi for his "L'Isole piu famose del Mondo". Map engraved by G. Porro. Shirley calls this map "a finely-executed reduction of Camocio's large world map of 1567". The map is one of the last in the succession that began with Gastaldi's 1546 prototype. An early depiction of the Straits of Anian between North America and Asia, which is shown stunningly close to California, as is Japan. Of most note perhaps is the giant landmass across the bottom, the apocryphal Southern Continent shown with endless interior mountains. At the far left of this continent it is engraved that it is "Unknown Lands (Terra Incognita) newly discovered". At the right side of this giant continent it's called "Terra de Lucha" (Fighting Land?). Taprobana (Ceylon) is mis-located far from Southern India, near to Burma, Thailand and SE Asia. No hint of the Great Lakes yet, the mythical Kingdoms of Quivira & Cibola named in North America. There appears to be a Northwest Passage above Canada, allowing for a direct naval voyage to Asia from Europe. Charming 16th century engraved map, nice looking example, pleasing age patina, old tear repaired long ago in top left corner (above and outside printed map plate area), any minor age flaws easy to overlook or forgive. Text as always below map and on reverse of sheet. Sheet measures c. 11 1/2"H x 7 1/2"W. Engraved area measures c. 10"H x 6"W. Pena, Pierre / Matthias de Lobel.
Antwerp, Christoffel Plantin, 1576. Small folio, index large 4to (29 x 20 cm). (4), 471, (1 blank), 15, (1 blank), 24, [12 (of 16)] pp. Title-page with an elaborately decorated woodcut architectural frame, about 307 (of about 317) woodcut botanical illustrations and a few woodcut decorated initials (4 series). Set in roman types with extensive italic, and textura, fraktur and Greek for the Dutch, German and Greek plant names. Contemporary or near contemporary limp sheepskin parchment, sewn on 3 double cords, with "PENA|ET|LOBEL" in manuscript capitals at the head of the spine. Enlarged Plantin issue of the first edition of an important Latin herbal with more than 300 excellent woodcut illustrations showing the plants in remarkable detail, usually including the roots. Its classification system, based on characteristics of the leaves, was better than any used previously. Thomas Purfoot first issued this edition at London in 1571 (title-page 1570), but Plantin bought a large part of the press run and reissued the book with extensive and important additions. He replaced the preliminaries, but also added a 15-page appendix (pp. 456-471) with 35 new woodcuts, the 15-page "Formulae aliquot" and 36 pages of indices. Two additional leaves ([3], [1 blank] pp.) printed with the indices (5*3-4) formed an additional appendix with 10 additional woodcuts, but have been removed from the present copy. Its last page also included Plantin's colophon, dated 26 July 1576. The main text (in both the London and the Plantin issues) is divided into two parts. The title on the title-page applies to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cornelis CORT (Hoorn, nr Alkmaar, 1533 - Roma, prima del 22 Aprile 1578)
Bulino, 1576, firmato e datato in lastra in basso a sinistra.
