In contradiction to the text, the city is surrounded by a wall. According to legend, Moscow was founded in 1147 by Yuri Dolgoruki; by the 15th century it had become a large city with decisive wordly and religious power. The symbol of wordly power is the Kremlin, which was constructed from 1485 to 1495 and extended in several stages up to 1530. In 1472, through the marriage of Ivan III with the Byzantine Princess Sophia Palaiologos, the niece of the last East Roman emperor, Moscow also became the centre of the Russian-Orthodox church. MORI DA, CENO Ascanio de'.
In Mantova, per Giacomo Ruffinello, MDLXXV (1575). in-4, ff. (4), 51, (1 finale, con errata), carattere corsivo. Legatura coeva in pergamena floscia, assai fresca. STC 449. Bologna, Trivulziana 226 (Rime sole). Adams M-1783; Olschki Choix II, 2610. Cfr. SAXTON, Christopher - LEA, Philip
London: (1575-[c.1693]). 380 x 535 mm., trimmed to plate-mark on three sides and signs of old folds, this map has at some stage been folded into a smaller book, minor wear, otherwise a fine example.; Dorset was one of the very first counties surveyed by Saxton. Evans and Lawrence suggest that Saxton worked his way along the south coast from East to West during the year and that an analysis of the engravers used for these counties led them to suggest Remigius Hogenburg was responsible. The Royal Arms, with supporters and cartouche with title are replaced by a plan of Dorchester. The Royal Arms without supporters are placed on the right of it. Much of the amendments to the plate had already occurred by 1665 but Philip Lea did add the crosses and crowns by c.1689 and for 1693 re-engraved the title and added the roads. The new title takes the place of the arms of Thomas Seckford. Hundreds, additional place-names in the adjoining counties and reference letters are shown. Lower right are displays of the arms of Jerome Walton E: of Portland, Osmond E: of Dorset, Jo. Beauford, Thomas Grey and Thomas Sackvil, the Earls and Marquises of Dorset.Philip Lea flourished 1666-1700 as a cartographer, globe and instrument maker and map seller. His atlases were rarely uniform usually being made to order and his editions of Saxton's atlas are similarly varying in content although built around his stock of the original plates. These he acquired sometime around 1689, but from whom is unknown. The fate of some of the plates is unclear but two, Devon and Northumberland, never reappear suggesting … [Click Below for Full Description]

LOTTINI GIOVAN FRANCESCO.
VENEZIA, LEONZINI, 1575. In-8°; 20 cc. (indici), 304 pp.; legatura coeva in tutta pergamena (dorso restaurato). Edit on line 35561. Ferrari 313. Gamba 1495. Bozza, 46-8.

AUSONIUS, (AUSONE)
Bordeaux, Simon Millanges, (1575-1580). ______ Format : In-4. [272 x 196 mm] Collation : (396) ff. GENTILLET, Innocent (1535-1595)
THE FIRST "ANTI-MACHIAVEL" 8vo. (16), 639 (i.e. 637), (19) pp. With a woodcut device on the title and on the last leaf. 18th century calf, richly gilt spine with gilt lettering on red morocco label, red edges, marbled end-leaves, old entry of ownership on the title page, a few old marginal annotations, some very light damp-stains, a very fine copy.FIRST EDITION of the most significant French contribution to political theory before Bodin's République, dedicated to the Duke of Alençon, who joined the Huguenots in September 1575. If Gen-tillet is today a more or less forgotten man, if his main work lies in oblivion, superseded by the eighteenth century Anti-Machiavel of that arch Machiavellian, Frederick of Prussia, it is nonetheless true that Gentillet in his own time and into the next century was one of the most influential personalities in the anti-Machiavellian polemic. This is testified by the fact that his Discours was reprinted repeatedly until the middle of the seventeenth century (cf. S. Anglo, Machiavelli: The First Century Studies in Enthusiasm, Hostility, and Irrelevance, Oxford, 2005, pp. 271-324)."A convincing re-assessment of the historical relevance of the book cannot be achieved without replacing it in the context of the political and religious situation in France at the time when it was written, and of the attitude, concerns, and aspirations of the church of Geneva, that authorized its printing and in all probability greatly contributed to its wide circulation... To realize that the most specific and profound reason for his anti-Machiavellism is in direct rel … [Click Below for Full Description]
