SLUPERIUS (Jacobus).
Antverpiae, apud Ioannem Bellerum, 1575 (et à la fin:) Antverpiae, Excudebat Aegidius Radaeus, 1575. Petit in-8. 8ff. 472pp. 4ff. [Click Below for Full Description]

VISSCHER, Claes Jansz.
Atlas van Stolk 1575 (Dutch issue); Hollstein XXXVIII, p. 30, no. 45 (all issues, 5 copies); Knuttel 3449 (this issue); Muller, Historieplaten 1495c (this issue). Engraved portrait of the Arminian preacher Hendrick Danielsz. Slatius (1585-1623), wearing handcuffs and the clothes of a farmer. Slatius was arrested (and later executed) as one of the conspirators in the failed attempt to assassinate Maurits of Nassau, Prince of Orange, in 1623. The print was issued with either Dutch or French poems at the left.A heated theological and political conflict had raged in the Low Countries between the Arminians (from 1610 also called Remonstrants) and Gomarists for more than a decade when it came to a head with the Synod of Dort (1618/19), which decided in favour of the Gomarists. The Synod led to the 1619 execution of the Republic's greatest statesman Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, who had supported the Arminian cause. In revenge his sons Reinier and Willem conspired to assassinate the (Gomarist) Dutch stadholder Maurits of Nassau, Prince of Orange. Other prominent members of Dutch society who had political, religious or personal grudges against the Prince lent their support. The plot was betrayed in February 1623, and the conspirators arrested and executed from March to May. A very good copy.

ORTELIUS ABRAHAM
Anversa, 1575. Good example of the second plate of Ortelius' map of Asia from a latin edition of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first modern atlas of the world. The map is based upon Ortelius's wall map of Asia, which is based on Gastaldi. Van den Broecke 7 Nr.cat: Cod 3658

Etienne DUPERAC (1525-1604)
1575. Bulino, firmato in lastra in alto a sinistra. Engraving, signed at upper left. After Francesco Salviati. A magnific impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the platemark, very good conditions. The work comes from Francesco Salviati and can be traced back to the early Roman period of Diana Scultori, circa 1575-1576. The dating and attribution to the Salviati are possible thanks to another engraving of Diana, of the same subject - in counterpart with respect to this and with some variations - dated 1583 in the plate with an inscrip … [Click Below for Full Description]

"A bird's-eye view of Cairo and the surrounding countryside, with depictions of the pyramids and the Sphinx. A legend describing the view is enclosed in a strapwork cartouche at bottom right. Thomas Guarinus, 1575. First Edition. Small 4to. [8], 185, [23] pp. Modern vellum, red and white mottled edges. Old shelf-mark (?) "4069" in ink on title. Light foxing throughout. Overall very good. "All Things Burgundian." This early and impressive Renaissance chronicle of Burgundy covers the years 408 to 1482 and presents key events in tabular form. That copies of this work were in the libraries of Isaac Newton (cf. John Harrison, No. H1687) and Horace Walpole (Strawberry Hill sale, 26 April 1842, Case E, group lot 8) attests to its significance. According to the author, the present work was composed with the aid of hitherto unpublished manuscripts; among these must have been the Chronica Regum Visigothorum or Leges Visigothorum: in the list of authors and "monumental works" consulted is the reference to the "Vuisigothorii (sic) Chronicon manuscriptum." ¶ "The only writer who dealt with the later history in a really critical spirit was Nicolas Vignier (1530-96), whose critical sense had been stimulated by the study and practice of medicine" (A.A. Tilley, French Humanism and Montaigne, in: The Cambridge Modern History, 1905, vol. III, pp. 63-64). A Calvanist by birth, Vignier first trained as a lawyer; fleeing persecutions he was exiled to Germany where he was retained as the personal physician to several German princes. After converting to Catholicism he returned to Paris where he served as a physician and court historian to Henry III of France. 1575. Rarissima. In 1575, François de Belleforest published a new edition of the Cosmographie Universelle of Münster (Germany). One section of city maps which in this work was reprinted, and this was the case for this map engraved in wood with finesse by Cruche. Woodcut, cut in the right side, in good condition.

CELIA ROMANA e BARGAGLI, Girolamo.
In Venetia, appresso Iacomo Simbeni, 1572 e In Venetia, appresso Gio. [Click Below for Full Description]

Valeriano Piero
