Etienne DUPERAC (1525-1604)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Georg BRAUN & Franz HOGENBERG
"A bird's-eye view of Cairo and the surrounding countryside, with depictions of the pyramids and the Sphinx. A legend describing the view is enclosed in a strapwork cartouche at bottom right. The text above the view of the pyramids reflects the disdain with which the non-Christian nations were viewed at the time. ""These pyra … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

BRAUN, Georg & HOGENBERG, Frans.
Koln: c.1575. Original colour refreshed. 330 x 490mm. The earliest town plan of London to survive, a 'map-view' with the major buildings shown in profile, and no consideration for perspective. It was published in the 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum', the first series of printed town plans, inspired by the success of the 'Theatrum', the atlas compiled by Abraham Ortelius. This example is from the fourth state of the plate, with the spelling 'West Muster' and the addition of the Royal Exchange. The plan was engraved by Frans Hogenberg, copied from a 15-or-20-sheet printed map, probably commissioned by the merchants of the Hanseatic League, who had significant commercial interests in England. For over two centuries they had enjoyed tax and customs concessions in the trade of wool and finished cloth, allowing them to control that trade in Colchester and other cloth-making centres. Their base in the City was the Steelyard (derived from 'Stalhof'), named 'Stiliyards' by the side of the Thames on this map and described in the text panel lower right. 1475. Part of the trade deal was their obligation to maintain Bishopsgate, the gate through the city walls that led to their interests in East Anglia. The rump cities of the Hanseatic League sold the building in 1853 and it is now the site of Cannon Street Station. The map must have been drawn fifteen years or so before publication: in the centre is the Norman St. Paul's Cathedral, with the spire that was hit by lighting and destroyed in 1561 and not replaced before the Great Fire of London destroyed the building in 1666. 1575. "Russiae, Moscoviae et Tartariae Descriptio ( )Copperplate engraving/etching with contemporary hand colouring. on hand laid (verge) paper.Sheet size: 51,8 x 39,7 cm. Image size: 44,7 x 35 cm.First published in 1570. From a German ed. of the 'Theatrum ' atlas by Ortelius. Ref: Van Den Broecke 162.Made by Abraham Ortelius after Antonio Jenkensono. Abraham Ortelius was born 1528 in Antwerp. He studied mathematics, Greek and Latin and travelled a lot across Europe. He established a business in dealing with books and drawing maps. His first remarkable map was a 8 sheet world map in the year 1564, but only three copies have survived. In 1570 he issued the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum", the first modern "Atlas" with uniformly sized maps in a systematic collection. The term "Atlas" was not used until Mercator introduced it 20 years later. Most of the maps in Theatrum have been engraved by Frans Hogenberg. At the time of publication, the atlas was the most expensive book ever printed. Nevertheless it was a big success and around 7000 copies have been printed until 1612 in many editions and six different languages. Beside the Theatrum, Ortelius compiled a series of historical maps and published it in the "Parergon Theatri" which was bound with the Theatrum from 1579 onwards or published separately.Condition: Very good, given age. [MUNIBE, José María].
Rare account of the life and Japanese martyrdom of the patron saint of Mexico (and first Mexican saint of any kind), Felipe de Jésus (1575 or ca. 1572-1597), with 15 additional plates from the extremely rare and closely related print series of De Jésus's life, issued one year earlier. The engraved title-page, portrait, and the 15 additional plates from the 1801 print series were all produced by José María Montes de Oca (1668-1748), one of the most important book illustrators and engravers of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and all are here coloured by a contemporary hand. De Jésus was a Franciscan missionary who grew up in Mexico and worked at Manilla in the Philippines from 1590 to 1596. On his way back to Mexico a storm forced his ship to land on the Japanese coast, where it was confiscated and he and the other passengers and crew imprisoned. The fact that there were soldiers and cannons on board lead the Japanese authorities to interpret the landing as an attack, so De Jésus and the others were arrested, imprisoned at Kyoto, their ears were cut off, and at Nagasaki on 5 February 1597 they were crucified and executed (pierced by two spears). The print series that supplied the extra illustrations, with the engraved title Vida de San Felipe de Jesus protomartir de Japon y patron de su patria Mexico, is Montes de Oca's finest work, one of the earliest print series published in Mexico, and the 15 plates added to the present book include De Jésus's arrival in the Philippines, his ship in the storm, his imprisonment in Ky … [Click Below for Full Description]

Atlas van Stolk 1575 (Dutch issue); Hollstein XXXVIII, p. 30, no. 45 (all issues, 5 copies); Knuttel 3449 (this issue); Muller, Historieplaten 1495c (this issue). Engraved portrait of the Arminian preacher Hendrick Danielsz. Slatius (1585-1623), wearing handcuffs and the clothes of a farmer. Slatius was arrested (and later executed) as one of the conspirators in the failed attempt to assassinate Maurits of Nassau, Prince of Orange, in 1623. The print was issued with either Dutch or French poems at the left.A heated theological and political conflict had raged in the Low Countries between the Arminians (from 1610 also called Remonstrants) and Gomarists for more than a decade when it came to a head with the Synod of Dort (1618/19), which decided in favour of the Gomarists. The Synod led to the 1619 execution of the Republic's greatest statesman Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, who had supported the Arminian cause. In revenge his sons Reinier and Willem conspired to assassinate the (Gomarist) Dutch stadholder Maurits of Nassau, Prince of Orange. Other prominent members of Dutch society who had political, religious or personal grudges against the Prince lent their support. The plot was betrayed in February 1623, and the conspirators arrested and executed from March to May. A very good copy.
