GENTILLET Innocent
THE FIRST "ANTI-MACHIAVEL" 8vo. (16), 639 (i.e. 637), (19) pp. With a woodcut device on the title and on the last leaf. 18th century calf, richly gilt spine with gilt lettering on red morocco label, red edges, marbled end-leaves, old entry of ownership on the title page, a few old marginal annotations, some very light damp-stains, a very fine copy.FIRST EDITION of the most significant French contribution to political theory before Bodin's République, dedicated to the Duke of Alençon, who joined the Huguenots in September 1575. If Gen-tillet is today a more or less forgotten man, if his main work lies in oblivion, superseded by the eighteenth century Anti-Machiavel of that arch Machiavellian, Frederick of Prussia, it is nonetheless true that Gentillet in his own time and into the next century was one of the most influential personalities in the anti-Machiavellian polemic. This is testified by the fact that his Discours was reprinted repeatedly until the middle of the seventeenth century (cf. S. Anglo, Machiavelli: The First Century Studies in Enthusiasm, Hostility, and Irrelevance, Oxford, 2005, pp. 271-324)."A convincing re-assessment of the historical relevance of the book cannot be achieved without replacing it in the context of the political and religious situation in France at the time when it was written, and of the attitude, concerns, and aspirations of the church of Geneva, that authorized its printing and in all probability greatly contributed to its wide circulation... To realize that the most specific and profound reason for his anti-Machiavellism is in direct rel … [Click Below for Full Description]

Georg BRAUN & Franz HOGENBERG
Note coeve al margine bianco. Axs

Apian, Peter [Apianus, Petrus]; Frisius, Gemma
An important and handsome edition, magnificently bound for a wealthy patron, of the standard work on cosmography -a combination of geography and astronomy- of the 16th century; first printed in 1524, Apian´s work saw close to 40 editions in the first 100 years of its appearance. The work includes parts on geography, cartography, navigation, and instrument making. The illustration is composed of a large vignette to title portraying the globe, over 100 woodcuts in text, and 4volvelles (fol. 8 verso, 11 recto, 28 recto et 49 recto, 65 et 189) Apian (1495 - 1552), born Peter Bienewitz to a shoemaker was a remarkable German humanist, mathematician, astronomer and cartographer. The work was edited by Gemma Frisius (1508 - 1555), physician, mathematician, and instrument marker, famous for his globes and advanced in surveying and navigation. It is due to Frisius that we owe the Libellus de locorum, which proposed the principle of triangulation as a means to locate places and map areas. Provenance: M. Grobliez (manuscript ownership inscription on front pastedown); another inscription on last leaf "Kopernikorda ratia iez rakazana"; purchased from Rossignol in 1935 by Maurice Burrus, his printed ex-libris on front pastedown. Alden & Landis 574/2. Sabin 1738-1756 (for different editions).

BRAUN, Georg and Frans HOGENBERG.
Antwerp after 1575 - Double-page engraved map with fine hand-colour. Dimensions: 350 by 490mm. (13.75 by 19.25 inches). A beautiful example of this striking decorated map, celebrating Moscow under Ivan the Terrible. Finely coloured with good margins. This beautifully coloured map is taken from the great 16th century work Civitates orbis terrarum. Based on Sigismund von Herberstein's own 1547 map, it shows the city of Moscow from a slightly elevated viewpoint across the frozen Moskva River. The walled centre of the city is depicted with its many churches and rows of houses, and filled with people and horse-drawn sleighs, others of which are shown, along with skiers, on the river to the right. In the top left corner is the nicely adorned coat of arms of the city. In the foreground are depicted four armed Russian soldiers on horseback. The German caption above them indicates they are wearing the typical "Moscovite war armament". These graphically reflect the growing military power of Moscow under Grand Duke Ivan IV (Ivan the Terrible), who was the first to assume the title of Tsar of Russia and who established the city as the capital of the Grand Duchy of Russia in 1547, not long before this image was made. Next to the soldiers appear two types of cattle, typical for the region. The first one is the European bison and the right one the auroch, an extinct type of large wild cattle that inhabited Europe, Asia and North Africa. As the aurochs became rarer - becoming extinct in 1627 -, hunting it became a privilege of the nobility. Both images together with the caption in German, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Etienne DUPERAC (1525-1604)
[Click Below for Full Description]

"Unknown print maker; AA, Pieter van der (1659-1733)"
Illustration of the inauguration of the Leiden University on 8th February 1575. A procession of personages displayed in four rows with text in letterpress added on the right in Latin and on the lower border in Dutch with names of the represented men and symbolic items. All the subjects treated at this University are here represented along with historical personages related to them. For example the Bible (nr.3) is followed by the four Evangelists, Law (nr.8) by some of the most important Roman jurists, like Papinianus and Ulpianus, Medicine (nr.13) is followed by Hippocrates, Galenus, Dioscorides and Theophrastus, and so on. The procession continues with members of the city council, eminent professors and patrons of the institution. The first generation of scholars at the University of Leiden came almost exclusively from abroad, and its curators went to great effort to hire the best known scholars of the day. In the first quarter-century of its existence, almost sixty percent of the professors came from outside the Dutch Republic, half of them from the Southern Netherlands. As it appears from the explanatory texts names of professors were Latinized. In fact we read Casparus Coolhasius (nr.25) who was teaching theology, Theodorus Nieuwburgius (nr.28) professor of law, Petrus Forestus (nr.34) professor of medicine, assisted by Laurentius Orschotius (nr.37). Gerardus Bontius (nr.40) was a medical doctor, however he was assigned to teach mathematics. Cornelius Grotius (nr.43) uncle of the most famous Hugo Grotius (at that time unborn) was asked to teach philosophy. The processio … [Click Below for Full Description]

Um 1575. Gesamtansicht aus der Vogelschau. Kolor. Radierung von Franz Hogenberg (od. Simon van der Neuwel), aus Georg Braun und Franz Hogenberg, Civitates orbis terrarum, Bd. I, Köln 1572. 19,7 x 24 cm. - Mfr.
