Guazzo, Stefano
Vinegia: Apresso Enea de Alarise, 1574. One of two editions printed in the same year, priority unknown. Printer's device on title-page. [32], 593 [i.e., 560] pp. (numerous mispaginations; last page misnumbered "593"). *8*8A-Mm8. 1 vols. 8vo. Rare and Important Courtesy Book. Guazzo's text, as translated by George Pettie (THE CIVILE CONVERSATION, 1581) had a considerable impact on Tudor and Jacobean England's concepts of the conduct and etiquette proper to a gentleman; its influence can be seen throughout the literature and drama of the day. Guazzo's book first appeared in 1574. There were two editions printed in that year (priority seemingly unknown): one in 4to, printed in Brescia by Vincenzo Sabbio for T. Bozzola, which "is probably the first" (OCLC); and the Venetia edition, printed by Enea de Alaris. Both editions are uncommon, but the Venetian edition, is by far the rarer -- OCLC locates only two copies (Yale and Huntington) of it in America. OCLC: 54249802; Brunet II, col. 1781 (Brescia ed.); not in Adams. Contemporary vellum with ms title on spine, covers and spine slightly soiled, small tear in lower joint and head a bit rubbed, minor worming mostly confined to endsheets front and rear; small repair to title leaf, text unafffected; occasional slight spotting to text, but mostly quite clean, very good, solid copy overall.

A handsome copy of this early issue of the first edition of Porcacchi's classic work on funeral customs with the beautifully engraved plates in very good, clear impressions. Among the Italian texts of the 16th century dedicated to the funerary ceremonies of the ancients, the ‘funerali antichi di diversi popoli, et nationi' is certainly one of the most interesting. FROISSART, JEAN
Paris: Pierre L' Huillier, 1574. Second Sauvage Edition. One of the great works of Medieval history, Froissart's "Chronicle" is replete with anecdotes and tales of court intrigue, even murder. Covering the period 1325-1400, it comprises "a narrative of the principal occurrences of the period of the Hundred Years War, including many particulars relating to affairs of Italy, Spain, Germany, etc., but chiefly of the battles and sieges, repressions of popular risings, massacres, and pillage, seen as exploits of the feudal chivalry of France and England." A considerable achievement as a literary account, the work is "of extraordinary vividness and (in spite of errors of chronology and topography) of high historical value for the picture it presents of the conditions and sentiments prevailing in this period." (Oxford Companion) Froissart's "Chronicles" is the principal source of our knowledge of all but the final phases of the Hundred Years War between England and France. First published in 1559-61, the present version was prepared and annotated by the historiographer to Henri II, Denis Sauvage de Fontenailles (1520-87). Our edition is scarce, with USTC locating just nine copies in US libraries.. 350 x 215 mm. [NORTHAMPTON, HENRY HOWARD, EARL OF]
London: Henry Bynneman, for Humfrey Toy, 1574. FIRST EDITION. A response to the Presbyterian Thomas Cartwright's "An Admonition to the Parliament" attacking the Elizabethan Church of England, this rare book is part of what DNB deems "the most remarkable body of writings completed by any early Stuart politician with the exception of Sir Francis Bacon." Henry Howard, Earl of Northampton (1540-1614) was the son of the poet and courtier, the earl of Surrey, and grandson of the powerful duke of Norfolk. Tutored by the martyrologist John Foxe and humanist Hadrianus Junius before receiving his degree from King's College, Cambridge, Northampton successfully navigated the treacherous waters of Elizabethan politics, eventually working with Robert Cecil to insure the succession of James IV after Elizabeth's death. He also found time to write a series of treatises DNB judges as an "enduring legacy, of an intellectual rather than material kind," noting his talent for "choosing the subjects carefully to underscore his political reliability and orthodoxy, and adorning his work with the elaborate apparatus of Renaissance scholarship." Here, he addresses such theological controversies as the attire to be worn by priests and bishops, the right of bishops to intervene in civil matters, the act of kneeling for communion, and the wearing of veils by women. It is clear his intended audience was the layperson, as he thoughtfully translates any Latin or Greek text he cites in support of his arguments. Copies of this work are almost never seen in the marketplace: in addition to our copy (which see … [Click Below for Full Description]

ZACAIRE, Denis
Benoist Rigaud, Lyon. BOCCHI, Achille
Apud Societatem Typographiae Bononiensis, 1574. 1574. Blackmer 496; Göllner, Turcica 2398; Lane, The Arabic type specimen of Franciscus Raphelengius's Plantinian Printing Office, p. xxvi; De Nave, Philologia Arabica 23; Philologia Orientalis 264. First edition of Georgius Dousa's (1574-1599) own account of his visit to Constantinople (Istanbul) in 1597 and 1598, the main text in the form of a letter he wrote soon after to his father Janus Dousa, rector of Leiden University, supplemented with a few earlier letters (for example, from Meletius Pegas (1549-1601), then Eastern Orthodox patriarch of Constantinople) and Dousa's renditions of 25 Greek and Latin inscriptions that he saw there. He frequently gives the Turkish names of things or people he saw, or quotes what Turkish speakers said to him, rendering the Turkish in both Arabic type and transcribed with the Latin alphabet. The Italian presses concentrated on missionary printing and other publications spreading the Roman Catholic faith, but the Leiden Arabists, though devote Protestant Christians, appreciated Arabic scholarship and wished to learn from it. The elder Franciscus Raphelengius, who married one of Christoffel Plantin's daughters and took charge of his Leiden printing office when Plantin returned to Antwerp in 1585, became one of the leading European Arabic scholars of his day. His naskh Arabic type became the staple of early scholarly printing in Arabic and the only Arabic type cut outside Italy to see extensive use before Erpenius introduced new types influenced by it twenty years later. The present book is the fourth publication to use Raphelengius's Arabic … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ziletti's device on title, 5 large woodcuts showing operations (2 on the battlefield), numerous woodcut illustrations of surgical instruments and heads with incisions, occasional staining or soiling; title with outer corners extended; fol. f5 with marginal infill, gathering AA at end with old ink stain to top margin, extending perhaps 5 mm and not affecting text, N1-2 with old ink stain in the lower margin, likewise not affecting text; Interesting early annotations to the first 35 pages. It is preceded only by this publisher's Latin edition of the previous year, and contains MORE woodcuts of surgical instruments and illustrations of the removal of bullets by field surgeons. The "Cirugia" is justly celebrated for its profusion of fine woodcuts, some half- or full-page. It includes original illustrations for cranial surgery. "Croce improved the instruments for trephination, and published classic woodcuts depicting the operation, including the first illustrations of a neurological surgery actually taking place. The work is also important for Croce's description of cranial and cerebral diseases. In hundreds of woodcuts of instruments and procedures Croce illustrated all of the instruments used before and during his own time" (Garrison-Morton). ICCU/EDIT16, n.33661. BM-STC Italian, p. 544. Non in ADAMS. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

BOCCHI, Achille
Bologna, apud Societatem Typographiae Bononiensis, 1574. Quarto (205 x 142 mm.), [24] leaves, CCCLVIII pages, xylographic printer's device on title-page, with an allegorical personification of the city of Bologna and 151 engraved emblems by Giulio Bonasone, after drawings by Prospero Fontana and Parmigianino, retouched for this second edition by Agostino Carracci. A few spots, marginal foxing, upper portion of title page cut away (1 cm.), overall a fine copy in contemporary limp vellum. Second edition of Achille Bocchi's famous Symbolicarum quaestionum (first published in 1555), one of the most fascinating and renowned emblem books of the Italian Renaissance. Achille Bocchi (1488-1562) was a Bolognese humanist, active as a lecturer, professor and historian at the Bologna university, and a high standing personality in the cultural milieu of this city. He also founded an eponymous Academy, the Accademia Bocchiana, which included among its members professors of the Studium, philosophers and humanists, and animated the city's culture for nearly a decade, between 1546 and 1556. The Academy had its own print and Bocchi's emblem book was probably the first work published within it; also the second posthumous edition holds its own typographic record, as it stands as the first publication of the Bolognese Typographic Society, founded in 1572. The Symbolicarum quaestionum libri are composed by 151 symbols, each of whom consists of a title, a dedication, a Latin or Greek epigram, and an allegorical illustration on copperplate. In this way, with regard to its general conception and str … [Click Below for Full Description]
