Monardes, Nicolaus.
Antwerp, Christoffel Plantin, 1574. 8vo. 88, (8) pp. With Plantin's woodcut compasses device on title-page and 10 woodcut illustrations in text. Modern decorated boards. First edition of an abridged Latin translation of Monardes's influential treatise on plants, animals and minerals from the "West Indies" (i.e. the Americas) and their use in medicine, translated and edited by Carolus Clusius. "Monardes was greatly influential in promoting awareness of the drug plants and animals of the Spanish colonies" (Landis). The treatise was originally published in Spanish in two parts (1565-1571) and includes important descriptions of tobacco, the long pepper, balsam of Peru, mechoacan and the sassafras tree. While Liebault had already published on Nicotiane in 1570, Monardes's account rapidly superseded that of Liebault in popularity and became the chief source of information on the subject in Europe. - With Hebrew inscription and traces of a removed library stamp on title-page. Small tear at the head of the title-page, the fore-edge margins trimmed short (occasionally shaving one or two letters from the side notes), several leaves browned and a small stain on the first three leaves, otherwise in good condition. Cherubino ALBERTI Borgo San Sepolcro 1553 - Roma 1615
[Click Below for Full Description]

Giovanni Marinello
Venice: Giovanni Valgrisio, 1574. See pictures. Modern vellum binding. A little thumbing and shelf wear to binding. Just the slightest bit splayed (boards curve just a tiny bit towards open at the ends). Erroneous "complete" pencil note written on the marbled flyleaf, "A" written on the back. Thumbing and soiling to the title page, with a repair at the bottom corner. There is an ink initial in an old hand at the top of signature a2. There is occasional foxing spots and page toning throughout. There is an intermittent moisture mark at the top edge that sometimes intrudes into the page header. Pages are toned from consistently from page 85 to 105. In the original printing there was a chapter index, and a table of contents at the rear; this copy ends at the last page of the work ("IL FINE") and does not include the index and table of contents. Last 3 leaves have moisture mark at fore edge, no text affected. Last leaf has a 1 cm hole at the bottom, no text affected. An early work on personal care and beauty for women; noted for its unapologetic advancement of personal beauty in a pious age, and it's use of the "vulgar" Italian language, rather than the academic Latin, allowing for greater readership among women of the time. "A practical manual of hygiene and beauty, from bleaching hair and whitening teeth to removing bodily odors. It is remarkable for its sane defense of women's quest for physical attractiveness, a search (the author) would also defend." (Panizza, L., 1999, The Nobility and Excellence of Women., p.3 of Introduction) The "Marinello Schools of Beauty" claim Marinello as "the founder of Modern Cosmetology". The work is not without controversy though. The University of Chicago posted this blurb - "The Italian physician Giovanni Marinello’s book is a comprehensive manual on female beauty and adornment containing, among hundreds of recommendations, advice on cosmetics and more than two dozen recipes for making dyes to bleach hair blond. Each of the four chapters is dedicated to a part of the female body, which is materially and visibly dismembered on the page, thus reflecting a fetishist desire aimed at the construction of an ideal body for men’s visual pleasure." Karnkowski, Stanis?aw
[Maciej Wirzbi?ta], [Kraków], 1574. First edition. In 19th-century half leather, boards covered with marbled paper. Spine with gilt title. Marbled endpapers. Woodcut device on title page, coat of arms of Poland with three fleurs-de-lis of France. A woodcut initial on A2r. 4º: A-D4. ff. [16]. First Polish edition of the panegyric to the King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, Henry of Valois (later Henry III of France) by the Great Secretary to the King of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Bishop of W?oc?awek Stanis?aw Karnkowski. Following the death of Sigismund II Augustus, in exchange for military support against Russia, diplomatic assistance in dealing with the Ottoman Empire, and financial subsidies, Henry of Valois, later Henry III of France became the King of Poland. On Henry's entry into Meseritz (Mi?dzyrzecz) it was Karnkowski who welcomed him in the name of the Polish estates. Karnkowski's panegyric to Henry was published in 1574 in Poland (the present edition) and also in Paris by Michel de Vascosan and Fédéric Morel (in two different versions by both printers). HORAPOLLO
Paris, Galliot du Pré and Jean Ruelle, 1574. Two parts with continuous pagination in one volume, 8vo. [8], 107, [1] leaves. Collation: *8 A-N8 O4. The last leaf is all blank but for a typographical ornament on verso. Title within a historiated border, and 193 woodcut vignettes within ornamental borders. The emblems on leaves C3r and G7r are printed upside down; the emblem on leaf I4r is printed sideways. Second part begins on numbered leaf 43 (F2) with special title page: Le second livre d'Orus Apollo niliaque des lettres sacrees des Aegyptiens. On the front pastedown illustrated bookplate F. Valter. Later vellum over boards, some light dampstains and browning, upper blank corner of the last three leaves a bit gnawn, but a fine copy with an old entry of ownership on title page "J. Vosterman", possibly by the famous Dutch landscape painter (ca. 1643-1699) who lived for a while in France and England. FIRST LATIN-FRENCH EDITION. The "editio princeps' of Horapollo's Hieroglyphica was printed by Aldo Manuzio in Venice in 1505. The present Latin edition translated from Greek by Bernardino Trebazio was first printed by Froben at Basel in March 1518 with a dedication to Konrad Peutinger. Numerous scholars cite an edition printed at Augsburg in 1515, which, however, is a ghost. The error probably originated from the dedication to Peutinger, which is dated Augsburg, April 21, 1515 (cf. S. Sider, Horapollo, in: "Catalogus Translationum et Commentariorum. Mediaeval and Renaissance Latin Translations and Commentaries: Annotated Lists and Guides", E. VISSCHER, Claes Jansz.
, . . Atlas van Stolk 1574; Hollstein XXXVIII, p. 31, no. 46 state III (6 copies); Knuttel 3457; Muller, Historieplaten 1494b. Third state of a rare print of the execution of the conspirators in the failed attempt to assassinate the Dutch stadholder Maurits of Nassau, Prince of Orange, in 1623, skilfully engraved by the publisher and engraver Claes Jansz. Visscher. The plate is divided into nine panels, the main one showing a view of the beheading at the square in front of Het Binnenhof in The Hague, watched by a large crowd. The other panels show portraits of Reinier van Oldenbarnevelt, David Koornwinder, Adriaen Adriaensz. van Dijck and Cornelis Gerrits and five smaller scenes of the dismembering of the bodies.A heated theological and political conflict had raged in the Low Countries between the Arminians (from 1610 also called Remonstrants) and Gomarists for more than a decade when it came to a head with the Synod of Dort (1618/19), which decided in favour of the Gomarists. The Synod led to the 1619 execution of the Republic's greatest statesman Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, who had supported the Arminian cause. In revenge his sons Reinier and Willem conspired to assassinate the (Gomarist) Dutch stadholder Maurits of Nassau, Prince of Orange. Other prominent members of Dutch society who had political, religious or personal grudges against the Prince lent their support. The plot was betrayed in February 1623, and the conspirators arrested and executed from March to May.The print was also issued as a broadsheet with a letterpress description below, here added in manuscript in … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thomas Cartwright, a Cambridge fellow and leading Puritan preacher, made a powerful denunciation of the episcopal church, which had divided the Cambridge into two camps, one for a strong centralized church leadership (Episcopalian) and one for shared church rule with the laity (Presbyterian, Geneva-style church rule).
