(BINDINGS - "VEXIERBÜCH" [GERMAN SIX-FOLD BACKLESS "PUZZLE" BINDING]). WALASSER, ADAM
Dillingen: Sebald Mayer, 1572, 1580, 1575, 1574, 1575. This sammelband of German Catholic devotionals from the proto-printer of Dillingen is an excellent example of a "Vexierbuch"--a "puzzle" or "tease" book--with five different 16th century works in two different sizes bound together and opening six different ways. The large book occupies the middle portion of the text block and opens like a normal octavo (except that it is divorced from the covers); the four smaller works, each measuring approximately 4 x 3 inches, are bound, with their protective boards, either on top of or underneath this middle section, and open with their boards flexing at the center. In the Wormsley Library catalogue (1999), Robert J. D. Harding notes that such volumes "are usually found on religious books" (as here), and suggests "perhaps they were handed around for quiet amusement during long sermons." Like the Wormsley book, ours is a "Sechsfächerband" or six-fold binding, and is also on a group of German religious works printed in the 1570s. Köster records 19 six-fold, backless bindings, mostly on devotional texts printed in Germany between 1570 and 1590. His work disproved a long-held belief that Vexierbücher were an exclusively Protestant, Northern German curiosity: two of the 19 six-fold bindings he lists in his register were, like ours, on Catholic texts printed in the Bavarian city of Dillingen, which, unlike many areas of Germany, remained Catholic. One of the two (Köster XI, now at the Bavarian State Library) contains four of the same titles found here, all published by Sebald Mayer, who … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alchemy ] Various authors: Avicenna, Merlin, Pseudo-Aristoteles, Rachaidibi, Veradianus, et al. Published and assembled by Peter Perna ( Petrum Pernam ).
Apud Petrum Pernam, Basileæ, 1572. Hardcover. Small, thick octavo. (6 3/8 x 4 inches). (xvi), 672, (iil)pp. Contemporary patterned brown calf boards. Old, neat reback with period-style raised bands and gilt stamped leather title label to spine. Printers devices and decorative initials. This is the first volume (of two), complete within itself, of the first edition of a work described by Ferguson as "one of the chief collections of standard alchemical authors" and by Thorndike as "comparable in variety and importance to 'Verae Achemiciae." It includes the first publication of the "Turba Philosophorum" (Assembly of the [Alchemical] Philosophers), a work which until then had existed only in manuscript form. The "Turba" is thought to date from the tenth century (C.E.), and is one of the oldest and best known works in the European alchemical canon, having, like the Picatrix, mostly likely been translated from an Arabic original. In addition to the "Turba", which takes up the first 200 pages of the work, this first volume of the "Auriferae Artis" contains a number of shorter alchemical works (full list below) attributed to a variety of authors such as Avicenna, Pseudo-Aristoteles, Rachaidibi, Veradianus, et al. Of particular interest are the "Merlini Allegoria" ("The Allegory of Merlin") on the philosopher's stone, a work described by Ferguson as having the appearance of "a fairly ancient document. It describes in a symbolical way certain operations with gold and mercury, and curiously enough it quotes no authority, but refers to Egyptian and Alexandrian physicians, and it might … [Click Below for Full Description]

MAROLOIS, Samuel.
Jordan 2389; STCN 082523983 (2 copies); this work not in Jähns; Sloos, Warfare. First edition of a work combining two of the best known works of Samuel Marolois (1572-1627): one on geometry and the other on fortification. Marolois was a well-known Dutch engineer and mathematician. His Geometria presents a thorough pictorial course of all aspects of geometry and its application to measurement, proportion, surveying, perspective, etc. It treats specifically the application of geometry to architecture and fortification. His Fortification ou architecture militaire, is richly illustrated and an important source for the Dutch art of fortification at the beginning of the 17th century. The woodcut illustrations in the text show many corners of fortresses with measurements of their angles and various calculations, but also some ground plans and tools for constructing a fortress. The engraved plates show complete ground plans of fortresses; the last plate depicts different types of cannons.

Gualteruzzi, Carlo compiler) and [Vincenzo Borghini ("corrector")].
Florence, Filippo & Jacopo Giunta, 1572. 4to (215 x 160 mm). (26), (2 blank), "153" (= 165), (3) pp. With the Giunta's woodcut fleur-de-lis device in a decorative cartouche on the title-page and a different one in an oval on the last page, a woodcut factotum at the head of the title-page, another woodcut decoration, about 120 woodcut decorated initials (about 7 series) including some repeats, decorations built up from arabesque typographic ornaments, and a vine-leaf ornament (Vervliet 90). With the main text set in roman type but the extensive preliminaries in italic. Contemporary limp sheepskin parchment, straight-sewn on 3 tanned calf supports cut flush with the bookblock, the spine reinforced with printed waste. Third edition (usually called the second), in the original Italian, of the first collection of native Italian stories, best known under the titles Il novellino and Le cento novelle antiche, written up as a collection (at least in some cases probably copied or adapted from various sources) between 1281 and 1300. Boccaccio borrowed and adapted eight of them when he wrote his Decameron between 1348 and 1353. Seven manuscripts survive from the early 1300s to 1523, but most contain fewer than 50 stories and only the last, commissioned by Pietro Bembo, contains 100. The stories are among the first to present ordinary people as protagonists in stories of everyday life. They are as bawdy as Boccaccio's but more conservative in their presentation of relations between the sexes, with women often though not always depicted as foolish and stupid (and once described as smelli … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Statue bust of Titus Livy facing left. Georg BRAUN & Franz HOGENBERG
Striking early pair of plans of Jerusalem, from Braun & Hogenberg's Civitates Orbis Terrarum, the most famous and influential book of town plans published in the 16th Century. Fascinating engraving containing two aerial views of Jerusalem. At the left, Jerusalem is illustrated based upon illustrations and accounts of Biblical Jerusalem as it was at the beginning of the first century BC. At the right, a modern view of the City, as it appeared in the 16th Century. Each is accompanied by legends listing important structures and places that are keyed to the plans. In the lower right is a vignette of Moses receiving the Commandments along with Aaron, whose garments and accouterments are listed in the table to the right.

Georg BRAUN & Franz HOGENBERG
Great map of the city printed in two sheets, inspired by Pirro Ligori’s famous map, taken form the Civitates Orbis Terrarum. The big cities atlas published by Georg Braun and engraved mainly by Hogenberg contains 546 views and maps of the world; it is the first work of that kind ever printed. This extraordinary reconstruction of Rome during the reign of August, decorated with a notable caption of 269 references, can be considered the most ambitious project inside the civitates Orbis Terrarum, and, moreover, it is one of the three maps in two sheets. Engraving, fin hand colour, in excellent condition, 1572. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Interessante e rara opera. Engraving, ca. 1572, wi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alhazen (Hasan Ibn al-Haytham)
Basel: Eusebius Episcopius, 1572. First edition of Alhazen's fundamental work on optics and vision, which influenced Galileo and Kepler and paved the way for the modern science of physical optics. Folio, bound in full contemporary Basel vellum with central arabesques blind-stamped to the front and rear panels, titles stamped in black and five raised bands to the spine, woodcut printer's device to the title page, woodcut initials, diagrams and full page illustration to the verso of the title page. Translated from Arabic into Latin by Gerard of Cremona. In very good condition. From the library of American physician Chester Tilton Stone with his bookplate to the pastedown. A superior example of this significant work, rare and desirable in contemporary vellum. Building on Ptolemy and Euclid, Arab astronomer and physicist Hasan Ibn al-Haytham (Latinized Alhazen) made significant contributions to the principles of optics and visual perception, his most influential work being his Kitab al-Manazir (Book of Optics), written during 1011-1021, which only survived in the present Latin edition. Ibn al-Haytham was the first to explain that vision occurs when light reflects from an object and then passes to one's eyes and the first to deduce that vision occurs in the brain, rather than in the eyes. Friedrich Risner, a protege of Pierre Ramus, prepared the first edition of Alhazen's work from two Latin manuscripts discovered by Ramus. Al-Jayyani's treatise on twilight is frequently found in manuscripts with Alhazen's Optics. Witelo's Perspectiva was previously published twice before its i … [Click Below for Full Description]

FILIARCHI, Cosimo.
Venice, Gabiel Giolito de’Ferrari, 1572.4to. Old wrappers. With woodcut printer’s device on title-page and on verso of final leaf, woodcut head- and tail-pieces, woodcut initials. (12), 163, (1]) pp.First edition. - In 1572, Filiarchi travelled to Venice in the entourage of Cardinal Pier Donato Cesi, a member of the papal legation that had negotiated with Venice and Spain to form the Holy League which defeated the Turks at Lepanto. Greatly impressed by this victory, which seemed to him the prelude to a great crusade, Filiarchi wrote on 1 september 1572 to Cesi, dedicating to him this exhortatory treatise, his first work. Making numerous references to the scriptures and to classical history, it is largely concerned with the Church role in a crusade, were one to be launched. There are chapters on the pope’s duties and powers as defender of the Chruch, on the origin and rise of the Turks, on why a war against the Turks is just, on the necessity of unity amongst the Christian princes, on the need for a Christian army to come under the command of a single General, on the question of wether the members of the clergy should be able to fight, on soldiers who are taken prisoner by the Turks, and so on. BELLARMATO GERONIMO - ORTELIO ABRAMO
Anversa, 1572. Incisione in rame, mm 330x48, testo tedesco. [Toledo], 1572. Manuscript. vg. Small folio. 12 1/4 x 8 1/4". 8 double-sided vellum manuscript leaves originally bound together (now unbound), hand painted and decorated in blue, red and gilt, at various points throughout the text. The first page is hand-painted and decorated along the edge and includes a large decorative initial in multiple colors. Manuscript text in gothic style. Signed "Yo el Rey" on the back of the final leaf, by King Phillip II of Spain in 1572. Our manuscript contains the 4 confirmed provisions originally drafted by Infante Henry (Duke) of Aragon (1421 and 1440), Alonso de Cárdenas (here listed as "Alfoso" [sic], in 1480) and then "The Catholic Kings" (in 1494) all of whom at various times served as "Grand Masters of the Order of Santiago". The provisions were instigated against the Jewish communities of the villages of Corral de Almaguer and Ocana, in Toledo province. Residents of the towns affiliated with the Order of Santiago repeately complained throughout the 15th and 16th centuries to the the authorities of that order, of that the Jews (and later conversos) had bought land from Christians and had not paid any taxes on their purchases. Ultimately the Jews of Corral de Almaguer were ordered to pay comparable taxes to the Christians for said property, but the Jews of Ocana were excepted because of their previous payments of other taxes. Given the fact that this manuscript copy dates from 1572, and was signed and reconfirmed by King Phillip II so long after the expulsion of 1492, shows there were still clearly tensions, and persecution of … [Click Below for Full Description]
