Luis Vaz de Camões
1572. Facsimile. Luis Vaz de Camões "Os Lusíadas" 1st Facsimile The Oporto Commercial Athenaeum commissioned the Ricardo do Espírito Santo Silva Foundation (FRESS) to produce 500 facsimile (numbered) copies of the 1st Edition of "Os Lusíadas" of 1572, the original of which is the property of the Athenaeum. It is a literary work - deluxe edition - of rare beauty, an epic poem of classic inspiration, consisting of ten songs composed of tenths in heroic decyllables. It lives from an aesthetically harmonized contradiction between the action of the pagan deities and the protection of Christian sentiment and the spread of faith, which animates an ardor of conquest and possession of the world. This First edition of "The Lusíadas", generally identified by edition A, or edition Ee, now known as Princeps edition, is part of the Athenian bibliographic collection. A replica, with perfect details, (weight, size, font, artwork, dust jacket, finish and texture, as well as the emission points than the original) of the first published edition. New, with original luxury coffret. Just opened to take pictures. This is the copy number 416 of 500 and cost 1.500€. [Attributes: First Edition]

Giovanni Francesco CAMOCIO (Attivo a Venezia tra 1558 - 1575)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Georg BRAUN & Franz HOGENBERG
Striking early pair of plans of Jerusalem, from Braun & Hogenberg's Civitates Orbis Terrarum, the most famous and influential book of town plans published in the 16th Century. Fascinating engraving containing two aerial views of Jerusalem. At the left, Jerusalem is illustrated based upon illustrations and accounts of Biblical Jerusalem as it was at the beginning of the first century BC. At the right, a modern view of the City, as it appeared in the 16th Century. Each is accompanied by legends listing important structures and places that are keyed to the plans. In the lower right is a vignette of Moses receiving the Commandments along with Aaron, whose garments and accouterments are listed in the table to the right.

Interessante e rara opera. Engraving, ca. 1572, wi … [Click Below for Full Description]

MAROLOIS, Samuel.
First Latin editions of two richly illustrated works, on geometry and on fortification, by Samuel Marolois (1572-1627), a French mathematician who published in the Netherlands. In 1614 Hendrik Hondius at the Hague had published Marolois's four major mathematical works in French (on geometry, fortification, perspective and architecture). Janssonius brought out new editions in 1627, followed by Dutch editions (1628-1630) and finally Latin editions (1633), corrected and revised by Albert Girard. The present volume contains the geometry and fortification in the original 1633 printing, but reissued in 1638 with a general title-page originally engraved for Janssonius's French edition of all four works and with a title-slip intended for the Latin edition of all four works. The first work provides a thorough and well-illustrated course in all aspects of geometry and its application to measurement, proportion, surveying, perspective, etc. The second was the most important and equally well-illustrated textbook on fortification, a field that the Dutch pioneered at the beginning of the 17th century.Very good copies of two important works, that on fortification helping to revolutionize that field.Cockle 821, note; Jähns, pp. 1093-1095; STCN (1 copy of each work, also with the 1638 title-page, the Geometria lacking its title-page); cf. Cockle 139 (English edition of 1638).

Nijmegen - Georg Braun and Franz Hongenberg, 1572-1618
[Click Below for Full Description]

BIVERUS, Pierre.
First and only edition of a beautifully illustrated Roman Catholic emblem book, written by the Spanish Jesuit Pierre de Bivero, Latinized Biverus (1572-1656). The book is divided into three parts, closing with an appendix. The first part is devoted to the emblematic representation of the Holy Virgin, with 16 engraved emblems, several depicting Mary in a cartouche on the breast of an enormous dove. The second part centres on King David, illustrated with 20 plates, and the third part deals with female saints, including 6 emblematic plates, 5 depicting two saints on each plate and the sixth devoted to Maria. The appendix contains 15 heart-shaped devotional emblems, which had been published before in the devotional work Typus praedestinationis, also printed at Antwerp, in 1630. The emblems were designed and engraved by some of the best Antwerp artists. Adriaan Collaert (ca. 1560-1618), a fine Antwerp engraver, was married to the daughter of Philip Galle, whose pupil was Charles de Mallery (ca. 1571-ca. 1631), the engraver of the full-page emblems. Theodoor Galle (1571-1633), who engraved the heart-shaped emblems, was Philip Galle's son and pupil. With the bookplate of Merlin d'Estreux de Beaugrenier on paste-down. Binding slightly rubbed along the extremities. Only very slightly browned with a few small spots. MAROLOIS, Samuel.
First edition of a work combining two of the best known works of Samuel Marolois (1572-1627): one on geometry and the other on fortification. Marolois was a well-known Dutch engineer and mathematician. His Geometria presents a thorough pictorial course of all aspects of geometry and its application to measurement, proportion, surveying, perspective, etc. It treats specifically the application of geometry to architecture and fortification. His Fortification ou architecture militaire, is richly illustrated and an important source for the Dutch art of fortification at the beginning of the 17th century. The woodcut illustrations in the text show many corners of fortresses with measurements of their angles and various calculations, but also some ground plans and tools for constructing a fortress. The engraved plates show complete ground plans of fortresses; the last plate depicts different types of cannons.Jordan 2389; STCN 082523983 (2 copies); this work not in Jähns; Sloos, Warfare..
