Ruscelli, Girolamo
Venice, Ruscelli, Girolamo, 1561. North Atlantic. "Septentrionalium Partium Nova Tabula". Orig. copper-engraving from G. Ruscelli's edition of Ptolemy's Geography. Published in Venice, 1561. This map is a reduced version of the Nicolo Zeno map of 1558. With title above the map. 20,5:26 cm.. Burden: The Mapping of North America, nr. 29 - A map of the northern part of the Atlantic ocean with Greenlad and Iceland. Girolamo Ruscelli's edition of Ptolemy's Geographia included newly engraved copperplates by Giulio and Livio Sanuti. The curious fact is that this map is one of two that were engraved on the same plate, printed and than separated for the book. This can be seen in the atlas by the fact that the plate mark of the map runs off the top of the page.

Chaves, Hieronymo de:
Seville: Juan Gutierrez, 1561.. [9],219 leaves. Woodcut map of the New World on the verso of leaf i4, woodcut map of Eastern Hemisphere on the verso of leaf i1. Woodcut illustrations and initials throughout. Woodcut portrait of the author on the titlepage. Small quarto. Contemporary limp vellum. The extremely rare fourth edition of Chaves' important early work on chronography and astronomy, featuring an early map of the New World. The first edition appeared in Seville in 1548, followed by editions printed in that same city in 1550 and 1554. Chaves (1523-74) was a distinguished mathematician, cosmographer, and poet living in Seville, and the first occupant of the chair for cosmography at the Casa de Contractacion. He was one of the first cosmographers to publish a map of the New World, appearing on the verso of leaf 68 in this edition. Chaves' New World map is an early and notable map of North and South America. Burden notes that the map "does show knowledge of some of the latest geographical findings; the Gulf of California and Cartier's expeditions in Canada. The Yucatan is correctly shown as a peninsula." The map is surrounded by twelve named windheads. The map of the Eastern Hemisphere names the continents of Europe, Asia, and Africa. The illustrations include several representations of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Basil Besler (1561-1629)
Basil Besler (1561-1629)Illustrated plate from Hortus EystettensisEichstatt: 1613Hand-colored copperplate engraving (later color)Sheet size: 22 1/2" x 17 1/2"Basil Besler’s great botanical work is a landmark of botanical documentation and pre-Linnaean classification, as well as one of the most splendidly stylized and aesthetically powerful botanical works ever produced. Besler was an apothecary and botanist who managed the gardens of Bishop Johann Conrad in Eichstatt, Germany. The Bishop’s remarkable garden was one of the most extensive in Europe, containing a huge variety of European shrubs and flowering plants, as well as exotic specimens from Asia and the Americas. Besler used this encyclopedic resource as the basis for the Hortus Eystettensis, in which he studied and depicted over a thousand flowers, representing 667 species in all. With the Bishop’s patronage, he worked both as artist and publisher, directing a team of ten artists and engravers in creating 367 plates over 16 years.    Published one hundred and fifty years before Linnaeus created his thorough system of classification, Besler’s great florilegium represents an impressive early attempt to classify plants for the benefit of botanists, doctors and apothecaries. Each plant is given a distinct and often descriptive Latin title, and related species are grouped together on the same plate, or over a series of plates. Almost all specimens are shown complete and accurately colored, including delineations of their root systems. While Besler’s work is obviously motivated by a scientific … [Click Below for Full Description]

Funk, Franz Ernst Theodor:
. . Einzige Ausgabe. - Stempel u. Bibl.-Vermerke der Fürstl. Bibliothek Fürstenberg, Donaueschingen. Engelmann S. 107. - Malberg S. 131. - Bonacker 78. - Poggendorff I, Sp. 818 (nicht dieses Werk).
