Manzolli Pier Angelo (Marcelus Palingenius, anagramma)
Giovanni Tornes e Guglielmo Gaze, Lione, 1556.

Paris: Jehan Longis, 1556. Hardcover. Near Fine. 4to. [20.8 x 14.7 cm]. (10) ff., 123 ff, (1) ff. (printer's device on verso). Bound in modern red crushed morocco, raised bands, spine in six compartments, spine gold tooled and lettered, covers blind tooled, gold-tooled board edges, gold-tooled dentelles, blue ribbon bookmark, red sprinkled edges. This first appearance in French should possibly be linked to topical interest in the wider world: The description of China in Münster's Cosmographia is mentioned in the preface and one should recall that the 1550's saw intensive French exploration and colonization in the Americas."Marco Polo was a member of a prosperous Venetian family engaged in commerce. He set out with his father and uncle in 1271 on a journey to the East. Starting from Acre the party traveled through Persia and the Upper Oxus to the Pamir plateau, and then through Mongolia and the Gobi Desert to the extreme north-west of China, reaching Shantung in 1275. Here they sojourned at the court of Kublai Khan until 1292, finally arriving back in Venice, after travelling through south-eas … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cicero, Marcus Tullius
Gryphium, Lugduni. 1556. Full vellum wrappers, 12mo, 256pp + index. Binding good with wrapper loose/detached at rear hinge, exposing the original sewing and backing. The wrapper is partially cracked/open along part of the rear joint, with a small tear toward the top, possibly caused by hardening from an old lacquering or varnishing of the spine. The upper edge is chipped but the spine end is fine. There is an old adhesive remainder toward the bottom of the spine. The vellum appears to have been written on at some point, though the evidence of this is faint. Internally, the book is in very good condition with a light tidemark to upper corner of the last 40 or so pages, otherwise bright and clean. There is a nice printer's device on the title page, and the book is nicely printed in general. Contents are unmarked, a very nice copy of this scarce volume. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

GIOVIO, Paolo (1483-1552)
Giordano Ziletti, 1556. In 8°, pp. (16), 236 (i.e. 232). The Emblem according to the Italian 'Impresa' Theorists, in: "The Emblem in Renaissance and Baroque Europe. Tradition and Variety", A. Adams A.J. Harper, eds., Leiden, 1992, pp. 22-32). [Click Below for Full Description]

FRANCO, Pierre.
Lyon: Antoine Vincent, [1556]. First edition, in an untouched contemporary binding and with a fine provenance, of this exceptionally rare work which "includes the first recorded description of an operation for strangulated hernia" (Garrison-Morton). This work is absent from many major medical collections, which regard the expanded second edition of 1561 as the first. "Pierre Franco, creator of suprapubic lithotomy cataract operation and surgical repair of hernia with preservation of the testis, is considered to be one of the greatest surgeons of the Renaissance and a forerunner of urology" (Androutsos, p. 255). "Considered from the point of view of the performance of operations, Franco should be considered the premier surgeon of the sixteenth century. Paré was an active man, observant, a man of genius, but he left aside what made the success of Franco, that is the operations of hernia, bladder stones, and cataracts. Franco spent his life in a completely different and modest setting compared to Paré, but he invents operations that should remain in the practice of surgery; there is no surgeon who has given more discoveries to surgery" (Nicaise, Introduction). "The first book published by Paré was his Dix livres de chirurgie - a small book of ten chapters - in 1564. In it he more or less copied, without credit, the sections of Franco's book on lithotomy and cystostomy. However, Paré acknowledged this later in his 1575 Oeuvres de Chirurgie" (McDowell). "Franco was influential in bringing operative surgery back into the realm of regular surgical practice, recapturing it from the … [Click Below for Full Description]

The book is a universal chronicle from the beginning of the first kingdoms and empires to Charles IX, a large part is occupied by France and England. The first two chapters provide an interesting political reading of history. This translation of J. Le Blond was continued until the reign of Charles IX. Chronicle Carion (1499-1537) was first published in German in 1532 and revised by Melanchthon, it was finally translated into Latin by Funk in 1547.
