RAMUSIO, Giovanni Battista and Giacomo GASTALDI
[Venice,: stamperia dei Giunta, 1556]. [Venice,: stamperia dei Giunta,, 1556]. Double-page woodcut map. The rare first state of Ramusio's map of New England and New France, produced by Giacomo Gastaldi for the third volume of Ramusio's highly important work, ‘Delle Naviagtioni et Viaggi.' It is the earliest printed map devoted to the region, and is also the first map to use the term ‘New France.' Gastaldi's map is largely based on the voyages of Cartier and Verrazzano. The Hudson River, the St. Lawrence River, and the islands near the Gulf of St. Lawrence are the most prominent features, along with a curious snake-like projection in the Atlantic Ocean that has been the subject of much speculation. It is probably an attempt to depict the Grand Banks, but it has also been suggested that it is the Gulf Stream. The depiction of the area between New York Harbour and Narragansett Bay is based on the voyage of Verrazzano in 1524. The area around New York Harbour, shown here as a peninsula, is named Angoulesme. The large bay to the east of New York Harbour is probably Jamaica Bay, which was more open to the ocean at that time. Long Island, which Verrazzano thought was a peninsula, is labelled Flora. The Hudson River is shown joining the St Lawrence - an assumption that Verrezzano and Cartier's rivers were connected. Ramusio's ‘Delle Navigationi et Viaggi' was first published in three volumes between 1550 and 1559, and followed by various subsequent editions, all of which had additions made to them. "This is one of the earliest and most important collections of voyages and trav … [Click Below for Full Description]

Antwerp: Hieronymous Cock, 1556. Single sheet, mounted and framed (6 x 9 inches). FINE engraving and etching, with transparent wash and body color, highlighted with gold and silver. Provenance: Signed "GM," most likely Georg Mack the Elder. First edition. EXTREMELY FINE engraving by Coornhert after Maarten van Heemskerck, ILLUMINATED and SIGNED by Georg Mack the Elder. Exhibited in "Painted Prints: The Revelation of Color in Northern Renaissance & Baroque Engravings, Etchings & Woodcuts," 2002, no. 42, at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Number 3 in a series of 12 engravings entitled "The Victories of Emperor Charles V." "In 1556 Hieronymus Cock published a series of 12 engravings, with a separate title page, on the theme of the victories of Emperor Charles V. The designs were by Maarten van Heemskerck, and the plates were cut by Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert…'The victories of Charles V' exalts the mighty deeds of the emperor. The title page refers to the prints as 'images of paternal triumphs' ('paternarum victoriarum imagines'), and the dedication is to Charles's successor as Lord of the Netherlands, so the series may well have been intended to urge Philip to follow in his father's footsteps… "The fall of Charles de Bourbon is the theme of the third print, with its caption: 'Bourbon is struck to the ground, and the imperial army storms the walls of Rome and plunders the wretched city.' A halberdier who has rushed to the scene can only look on in powerless dismay as Bourbon pitches backwards from the ladder placed against a tower-like structure that forms part of the city wa … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ariosto M. Lodovico
Venetia Vencenzo Valgrifi, 1556. Written in Italian. Vellum binding with laces showing along spine. Corners and edges worn and bumped. Some small holes and burn marks in the vellum. Outside pages stained in blue. Light foxing on endpapers and small holes worn through front board paper where laces have worn through. Note with previous owner's name, written in brown ink on back of first endpaper. Some stains and fingerprints but overall a clean edition. Book appears to have had some professional restoration with new tissue guard between frontis of author and title page. Title page illustration was precisely cut and glued to a new page. Some of the page edges show a professional repair.Ariosto's great cantos inspired by the crusades are considered his crowning achievement. First published in 1516, this edition was published after author's death, who died in 1533. The Orlando blocks were cut for this quarto edition and follow Niccolo Zoppino's idea of providing one illustration to each canto but going far beyond the Zoppino blocks in skill and cutting. These are the first full page illustrations for Ariosto. Valgrisi's artist often varied from Giolito'sin his choice of the principal scene for illustration and relegated the Giolito subjects to his background. Valgrisi's blocks are printed within borders with figures and grotesques. There are two different border designs for the illustrations and two smaller cherub borders for the heading(argomento) to each canto. End of cantos followed by annotations, also dated 1556 and table of principle aspects of the cantos.

Aurelii Augustini
basel: 1556. Leather Binding Very rare! It is a fabulous book from the 16th century, a museum piece, an excellent investment for collectors. Saint Augustine of Hippo (13 November 354 - 28 August 430) was a Roman African, early Christian theologian and philosopher from Numidia whose writings influenced the development of Western Christianity and Western philosophy. He was the bishop of Hippo Regius in north Africa and is viewed as one of the most important Church Fathers in Western Christianity for his writings in the Patristic Era. Among his most important works are The City of God, On Christian Doctrine and Confessions. According to his contemporary Jerome, Augustine "established anew the ancient Faith". In his youth he was drawn to Manichaeism and later to neo-Platonism. After his baptism and conversion to Christianity in 386, Augustine developed his own approach to philosophy and theology, accommodating a variety of methods and perspectives. Believing that the grace of Christ was indispensable to human freedom, he helped formulate the doctrine of original sin and made seminal contributions to the development of just war theory. When the Western Roman Empire began to disintegrate, Augustine imagined the Church as a spiritual City of God, distinct from the material Earthly City. His thoughts profoundly influenced the medieval worldview. The segment of the Church that adhered to the concept of the Trinity as defined by the Council of Nicaea and the Council of Constantinople closely identified with Augustine's On the Trinity. Augustine is recognized as a saint in the Catholic … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Bible; Protestantism] [Perez de Pineda, Juan].
First edition of the complete New Testament in Spanish translated by Protestan Juan Perez de Pineda during his exile -being wanted by the Inquisition- in Geneva, although published anonymously; this is the second time the New Testament appeared in a published translation in Spanish, Francisco de Enzinas (1518-1552) had formerly translated the complete New Testament Spanish from the Greek -Erasmus' Greek text-, and published it in 1543. Perez de Pineda (c.1500-1567) was a Spanish Reformer, and translator of the present Spanish New Testament; the first news available on his life is his stay in Seville at the Colegio de la Doctrina, at a time when the city had become a important center for the development of Protestantism in Spain, there lived Cassiodoro de Reina, Cipriano de Valera, and Ponce de la Fuente; soon persecutions started and all these men fled, both Reina and Valera to London, Perez de Pineda however took refuge in Geneva. The persecution peaked with a series of Autos de Fe in Valladolid and Seville, at one of them, Perez' image is burned along with other Reformers who has luckily escaped, in the same act a bookseller -and smuggler- of protestant literature is burned. "The allegorical woodcut on the title page depicts a believer pointing heavenward to a wreath of laurel while a non-believer falls towards a hellfire. These figures are situated on either side of a large letter Y, the arms of which are symbolically wide on one side and slender on the other. FRANCO, Pierre.
Antoine Vincent [1556], Lyon. First edition, in an untouched contemporary binding and with a fine provenance, of this exceptionally rare work which ?includes the first recorded description of an operation for strangulated hernia? (Garrison-Morton). This work is absent from many major medical collections, which regard the expanded second edition of 1561 as the first. ?Pierre Franco, creator of suprapubic lithotomy cataract operation and surgical repair of hernia with preservation of the testis, is considered to be one of the greatest surgeons of the Renaissance and a forerunner of urology? (Androutsos, p. 255). ?Considered from the point of view of the performance of operations, Franco should be considered the premier surgeon of the sixteenth century. Paré was an active man, observant, a man of genius, but he left aside what made the success of Franco, that is the operations of hernia, bladder stones, and cataracts. Franco spent his life in a completely different and modest setting compared to Paré, but he invents operations that should remain in the practice of surgery; there is no surgeon who has given more discoveries to surgery? (Nicaise, Introduction). ?The first book published by Paré was his Dix livres de chirurgie ? a small book of ten chapters ? in 1564. In it he more or less copied, without credit, the sections of Franco?s book on lithotomy and cystostomy. However, Paré acknowledged this later in his 1575 Oeuvres de Chirurgie? (McDowell). ?Franco was influential in bringing operative surgery back into the realm of regular surgical practice, recapturing it from the … [Click Below for Full Description]

PECKHAM, Johannes
1556. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. The 13th-century was the height of the Middle-Ages and saw the rise of scholars and prominent figures such as Aquinas, Roger Bacon, Albert Magnus, Francis Assisi, and Polo. However, another name should be included in this list - John Peckham. Peckham's contributions to the study of optics and experimental sciences were a direct reflection of those of Roger Bacon, of whom Peckham was well-acquainted. Peckham published various works on optics, philosophy, and theology, though none of them as important or popular as his 'Perspectiva'. This work features a collection of various articles and reports on experiments on optics, physiology of the eye, and catoptrics. He discusses the reflections of light, and descriptions of rainbows and the galaxy, and an early description of a 'camera obscura'! Peckham pushed the need for proofs of his discoveries, and in the 16th-century astronomers such as Harmann and Hamel propelled Peckham's 200 year old ideas. In addition to highly interesting and desirable contents, this book features 62 illustrations of Georg Harmann, a renowned 16th-century German astronomer who was focused on progressing the study of optics and astronomy. However, the editor of this 1556 edition was Paschasius Hamellius, an astrologer who was a staunch defender of old tables and schools of thought. (Crawford, 99). [Attributes: First Edition]

HERODOTUS. - [THE MONUMENTAL FIRST FRENCH EDITION OF THE HISTORIES OF HERODOTUS]
Paris, Iean Roigny, 1556. Folio. In contemporary linp vellum, with three (of four) of the original vellum ties. Binding with wear and inner hinge weak, but in completely original state, with no restorations. Only some light scattered brownspotting and a worm-tract to inner margin, just occasionally touching a few letters. Book-plate to pasted-down front end-paper. A lovely copy. (4), CCXLIII ff. The scarce first edition of Saliat's translation of the complete Histories of Herodotus, being the extremely popular first French edition and arguably the most important French edition of the work ever published. Saliat's monumental 1556-translation of Herodutus was extremely influential end widely used and quoted. It greatly influenced the way that Herodotus was used and understood in Renaissance France. It was used by virtually all contemporary French intellectuals as the main reference - as for instance Sandys points out, it is from this that all of Montaigne's Herodotus-quotations are taken (Sandys, vol. II, p. 197). Pierre Saliat had published a small work in 1552 consisting the the first three books of Herodotus, and in 1556, his monumental translation of the complete work appeared; for the first time, all nine books were accessible in the French language. "Little is known of Saliat's life except that he had produced two previous translations from Latin, Erasmus' "On Methods of Instructing Children" and a collection of Roman speeches. Both translations of Herdotus are dedicated to the king, Henry II, and Saliat notes that the work on the first three books had taken him six yea … [Click Below for Full Description]

RAMUSIO, Giovanni Battista and Giacomo GASTALDI
stamperia dei Giunta, 1556. The first printed map of Northeastern America Double-page woodcut map. The rare first state of Ramusio's map of New England and New France, produced by Giacomo Gastaldi for the third volume of Ramusio's highly important work, 'Delle Naviagtioni et Viaggi.' It is the earliest printed map devoted to the region, and is also the first map to use the term 'New France.' Gastaldi's map is largely based on the voyages of Cartier and Verrazzano. Ramusio's 'Delle Navigationi et Viaggi' was first published in three volumes between 1550 and 1559, and followed by various subsequent editions, all of which had additions made to them. "This is one of the earliest and most important collections of voyages and travels and ma … [Click Below for Full Description]

- Titel etwas angestaubt. Stellenweise minimal fleckig. Einband gering berieben und Kapitale sorgsam restauriert. The first three books were published in 1552. Saliat also translated works of Aristotle, Cicero, Erasmus, Philo of Alexandria, and Sallust. MACROBIUS Ambrosius Aurelius Theodosius & MACROBE
" - Apud Seb. Gryphium, Lugduni (Lyon) 1556, In 8 (10x17,7cm), 567pp. [Click Below for Full Description]
