Livy
Venetiis [Venice]: Apud Paulum Manutium, Aldi F., 1555. FIRST SIGONIUS EDITION, folio, ff. [iv], 478, 98, [40]. Later vellum boards, gilt-lettered morocco label on spine covering a blind-decorated leather label. An intermittent dampmark to fore-edge (heavier towards the beginning), otherwise just occasional spotting or light soiling. Lightly soiled, a little surface wear to joints and spine bands, upper label chipped and partially defective revealing the lower label beneath. A few early marginal notes, short early manuscript index to rear blank. Milltown Park library stamp to title-page and their shelfmark label and bookplate to front pastedown, along with the William O'Brien bequest label, their shelfmark also in biro near foot of spine. The first Sigonius edition of Livy, a groundbreaking work which substantially advanced the study of Roman historical chronology through Sigonius's emendations and copious commentary. Sigonius (or Carlo Sigonio, c.1524-1584) was professor successively at Venice, Padua, and Bologna, with this work (and his 'Fasti Consulares' of the same year) being 'the first in which accurate criticism was applied to the chronology of Roman history' (Sandys). Instead of using purely linguistic grounds to emend the text, Sigonius incorporated the historical content and manuscript tradition in his consideration of potential textual corrections. Later in the century Scaliger would build on Sigonius's methods for his more famously fundamental works on ancient historical chronology. Susio, Giovanni Battista
Vinegia: Apresso G. Giolito de Ferrari, et Fratelli, 1555. First edition. Large woodcut vignette (publisher's device); head- and tail-pieces, numerous large woodcut initial capital letters. Text printed in italic. 182, [18] pp. 4to. Susio's Rare Attack on Duelling: One Copy in the Last 30 Years. An important and beautifully printed attack on the practice of duelling which has become quite rare on the market (whereas the second edition of 1558 shows up with some frequency). Thimm, who had never seen a copy himself, refers to one in "Captain Hutton's Collection" and calls for a folding plate -- in obvious error, for among the 10 copies located by OCLC in institutions, not one contains any plates; nor did the one dampstained copy which appeared at auction in 1996 (and which was mistakenly presumed to be incomplete). Susio (1519-1583), Renaissance man of letters, eminent physician, humanist, and poet, dedicates his book to Henry II, King of France, who passed an ordinance against duelling. The subject of duelling and its legal, ethical, and social implications was a hot one in the latter half of 16th century Italy, and Susio's work is among the most important of several to appear in his day (Mutio, il Duello, 1550; Attendolo, il Duello, 1560; Pigna, Il Duello, 1560; Gallese, Contra l' uso del duello, 1565; et al.); and the Venetian house of the Giolito family seems to have printed many of them, including this. A very desirable copy of a rare and important book on the subject. Thimm, p. 280 (mistakenly calling for frontispiece); Levi & Geli, not in Adams; not in Brunet. Widmanstetter, Johann Albrecht & Guillaume Postel].
Wien [Michael Cymbermann] 21. November 1555 [Kolophon: Februar 1556]. 4to. 28 Bll.nnum. Titel in rot und schwarz gedruckt. Mit Wappenholzschnitt auf dem letzten Blatt recto. In rohen Bogen. Die eigens zu diesem Vorhaben neu geschaffene syrische Drucktype rühmt Darlow-Moule: »To print this N.T. special types of admirable delicacy and distinctness were prepared under the direction of a Frenchman named Guillaume Postel, who apparently imitated the Syriac handwriting of Moses of Mardin. Theses were cast in tin, the steel punches striking the matrices having been engraved by Kaspar Krafft, a Suabian Artist of Ellwangen.« Der Wappenholzschnitt zeigt das Wappen … [Click Below for Full Description]

Amazing condition near fine considering age, all signatures very nice. Original folds from sending out the Invitation a few spots and wear slight tears to places on edge see hi-res pics. Sold as is as a true artifact waf a true piece of History. 1555 INVITATION TO THE DIET OF AUGSBURG SIGNED BY CHARLES V and also very rare SIGNATURE OF Paul Pfintzing CHARLES V: Holy Roman Emperor King of the Romans King of Italy Also, this Invitation mentions the stark conditions of the war and a desire for peace. The Peace of Augsburg would bring the war to an end. He mentions his brother, "King of Rome"-the title given to the heir apparent in the Holy Roman Empire, who at this time was Ferdinand I. Here is a overall translation showing the gist of the Invitation: Due to the situation with wars, their cost, and other urgent business plus the alleged poor health of Charles V, he is inviting (i.e., ordering) the recipient to attend the Diet of Augsburg although he himself will not be there. In his place, his "friendly, dear" brother, the Roman King will run the meeting of the Diet to take place in Augsburg. There have been many postponements of this Diet--there will be more; the Diet took place more than a year later, in 1555. This perfectly matches the circumstances surrounding the negotiations that led to this Diet. Historians, citing Charles' correspondence, have said that he pretended to be sick and allowed his brother to run the Diet, because he himself could not accept the fact that Christendom would remain split between Catholics and Protestants. The title "Roman King" had long been u … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cfr. Pazzini: "...Da Monte esercitò medicina a Brescia, viaggiò per l'Italia fermandosi a Napoli, Roma, Venezia e Ferrara dove insegnò nel 1539. Passò quindi a Padova... ".
