1555 (colophon 1554). Venice. Giovanni Pedrezano. 8vo, (202 x 147 mm). 11 ff., 1 [blank], cxxxvii (including 7 sectional titles). Later vellum, possibly 18th century, lettering piece to spine, a little soiled; flyleaves renewed, blank at end integral. Contemporary inscription to title page, several pages with damp staining, stronger to some corners but overall a fresh and clean copy.- First Italian edition, one of the most influential practical treatises on navigation of the 16thcentury, widely used by pilots sailing to the Americas for over a century, including Drake, who carried a copy in his circumnavigation; this is the second issue, the only difference from the first being the altered title. The original edition was published in Spanish at Valladolid in 1545 under the title “Arte de Navegar”, it is today very scarce. It’s appearance changed the curse of navigation and redefined as it was understood in the century of discoveries; the map that illustrates it was one of the first of the Atlantic, shows the trade routes to and from Spain and represents cartographically the Papal demarcation dividing the Americas between Spain and Portugal. It was subsequently reproduced in Cortes’Breve compendioand Medina’sRegimiento de Navegacionin 1552. Medina (1493–1576) was a cleric appointedcosmografo de honorin 1549 by Emperor Charles the V, after having served as librarian to the Duke of Medina. The work is filled with woodcut diagrams, the title page with a splendid vignette of sailing ships. Sabin, 47346; Medina, (BHA), 123; … [Click Below for Full Description]

DENIS, the Carthusian
Aegidium Gourbin. 1555 Denis the Carthusian on Purgatory HEAVEN vs HELL Catholic Church Mysticism The works of Denis the Carthusian were important contributions to Roman Catholic doctrine. He published some 900 sermons and began commenting on scripture in 1434, which became immensely popular after Pope Eugene IV promoted his works. He covers the afterlife, purgatory, the penalty and horror of Hell, and the joys of Heaven. Item number: #8495 Price: $599 DENIS, the Carthusian D. Andrea Vesalius
Basel: Johannes Oporinus, 1555. In the year 1540 at the age of twenty-five, Andreas Vesalius, the founder of modern anatomy, planned this work on anatomy, generally known as the Fabrica from the title De Humani Corporis Fabrica. "Here are collected," states Dr. Arturo Castiglioni, "the experiences of a teacher who understands the necessity of performing dissections accurately, not according to classical book, but according to critical observations and individual findings." Vesalius, the gallant fighter, courageously attacked the scholastic doctrines from the time of Galen to his own teacher, Sylvius. After this book was issued, a physician no longer had to be primarily a philosopher, able to discuss health and disease in syllogistic form and with the help of classic quotations. Vesalius enlisted the service of Titian's brilliant pupil Stephen van Calcar, also an ardent anatomist. Calcar's illustrations are some of the finest that have appeared in any medical book and have only been excelled by the anatomical drawings of Leonardo Da Vinci. This second edition of 1555 is printed in a larger font of Garamond type, with added illustrations & is considered the finer issue of "one of the greatest books of the Renaissance" for text as well as format. 18.5 x 13.1 in

Rocca, Vicente
1555. Valencia. Juan Navarro. Folio, (303 x 214 mm). 4 ff., cliii. Eighteenth century stiff vellum, raised bands to spine, lettered in ink, head restored. A fine, wide-margined and unsophisticated copy, with only minor scattered foxing.- First and only edition of the best 16thcentury Spanish work on the Turks. During the greater part of century of discoveries, Soliman the Magnificent’s expansion through the Mediterranean and across central Europe threatened Europe and Spain to the point only a large-scale invasion could; Valencian-born Rocca narrates the campaigns, battles and privateering activities of the Bereberes on the coasts of Valencia and Andalucia. TheHystoriais divided into three parts, the first deals with the crusades done to Jerusalem, the second with victories of Charles V and Venice over the Turks at the African coasts, and the third deals extensively with the way of life and customs of the Turks –which allows us a glimpse of Spanish perception of what was one of the greatest nations of the 16thcentury. The work has been considered rare and important since the days of Salva. It is considerably rare; no copies are traced at auction in over 30 years. It is handsomely printed in two columns, with large engraved device to title page, gothic type. Though well represented institutionally, we can trace copies at the University of Bern, BNE, Universidad de Valencia, Newberry Library, London Library, Houghton Library (Harvard), BNM, National Library of Israel, BL, Mediatheque de Montpellier, and University of Pennsylvania, plus two oth … [Click Below for Full Description]

Olinger (Paul)
Blasius Fabricius, 1555. fine woodcut portrait of the author on verso of title, a full-page engraving of his arms opposite, woodcut initials, the woodcuts doctored in black ink at some point, not ruining them entirely, or even much, but lending them a certain lugubriousness, outer leavesa little soiled or spotted, minor foxing, pp. [xxxii, the last 2 blank], 25, small 8vo, disbound, contemporary annotations. Little seems to be known about Paul Olinger. The portrait shows him aged 37 in 1554. His coat of arms is impressive (a griffin rampant). In the years 1554 and 1555 he published a couple of pamphlets on legal ethics (which are referred to by Leibniz), and the present rare little work. He refers to Sebastian Derrer as his teacher, and builds on the works of Hegendorfin, Rasius, et al. (VD16 O 712)

After Frans Floris. Magnificent proof, rich tones and good contrast, printed on contemporary laid paper with unidentified watermark, trimmed to the marginal line, in excellent condition. The scene depicts the story told in the Old Testament (Exodus 16: 14-35) of the Israelites receiving food from heaven as they wandered in the desert. In foreground, a group of men and women and some children gather, some holding containers with the manna; in the background at right is an encampment with tents. At top left corner, a box with eight lines in Latin from Exodus 16. Ex collection of Richard Jung (L 3791), stamps on the verso." New Hollst … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Vicentino's... fame... rests on the treatise L'antica musica ridotta alla moderna prattica. The work as a whole is divided into two main parts. The first, a single book 'della theorica musicale', is based chiefly on Boethius but with an emphasis on those elements that support Vicentino's own ideas. The other part contains five books 'della prattica musicale', the first of which concentrates chiefly on a discussion of various intervals in their melodic functions, extended to encompass the possibilities of the three genera. The second concentrates on vertical function of intervals in contrapuntal practice. The third deals chiefly with the eight diatonic modes and their extension into chromatic and enharmonic forms. The bulk of the fourth applies all of these concepts to the actual construction of musical work and serves as a manual of composition. The fifth submits the principles and theories of the previous books to the definitive test of performance on an instrument, the arcicembalo, which was so constructed that any type of microtonal composition could be played on it..." "... Vicentino's novel and visionary concepts remain a witness to the battle of those musicians of 16th-century Italy who sought a new and contemporary art. From their innovations emerged the free chromatic style of the seconda pratica of the 17th century and the stabilization of tuning into the equal temperament of more modern time … [Click Below for Full Description]
