Robert Stephanus
Paris: Robert Stephanus, 1550. THERE IS A STORY BEHIND EVERY BLEMISH! Bible leaf collectors know that some leaves are hard to look at and others look as new as the day they left the printing press. The condition of a particular leaf reflects its history and is not an indication of its actual value. Perfect leaves are ones that have seen little or no use over the centuries in contrast to those that are scarred by the ravages of time. Unblemished leaves are unloved leaves because they have had little contact with sinners. Imperfect leaves tell a story. Some are torn and ripped and worn away by excessive use while others have burns or worm holes and still others are water stained by flood and sometimes even tears. Each ugly mark or stain is in fact a beautiful witness to the Word of God, which, "liveth and abideth forever." We offer Bible leaves as we acquire them letting their condition speak for themselves. All our leaves are sold as seen on eBay. You may request additional images and information for any leaf. Choice Leaves - Finer than Gold - From the Word of God Taste and see! It's sweeter than honey!! Lando Ortensio
Venice [Andrea Arrivabene] 1550. 8° (139x88 mm). Collation: A-I4. [36] leaves. Roman and italic type. Woodcut printer's device on the title-page. Woodcut decorated initials. Black half-morocco over pasteboards, executed in the Tarditi workshop in Turin in 1890. Marbled covers, gilt title on the spine. Speckled edges. A good copy, pale waterstain to the lower margin of a few leaves, upper margin rather trimmed.Provenance: 'Ex libris Juliani Pamphili' (seventeenth-century ownership inscription on the title-page); Major Bryan Palmes (ex-libris on the front flyleaf). Scarce first and only edition of this paradoxical booklet, quite in the style of its bizarre author, in which Ortensio Lando reflects on culture and books. By the middle of the Cinquecento, a number of books unimaginable only fifty years before had been produced and put into circulation. Consequently, many authors, such as Doni, Lando, and Gesner, felt the need to catalogue the relevant knowledge and make a survey of the cultural heritage transmitted through printed books. By doing so in an even less systematic way than Doni (see no. 111), Lando comes to the paradoxical conclusion that books by famous Renaissance authors are useless. However, in the final Essortatione allo studio delle lettere ('Exhortation to the study of literature'), he retracts this position and praises the merits of the great literary tradition. "Ortensio Lando treated the important issues and esteemed authorities of learning with a studied nihilism which mocked the whole structure. He defended first one side and then the other of sixteenth-ce … [Click Below for Full Description]

BIRINGUCCIO, Vannuccio.
Second edition of the only printed work to cover the whole field of metallurgy as known at that time, and the first comprehensive account of the fire-using arts. This work is the fruit of Biringuccio's actual experience, and embraces virtually the whole field of technology. It is divided into ten books, which deal with (1) metallic ores; (2) the "semi-minerals" (including mercury, sulphur, gems and glass); (3) assaying and preparing ores for smelting; (4) the parting of gold and silver, both with nitric acid, and with antimony sulfide or sulphur; (5) alloys of gold, silver, copper, lead, and tin; (6) the art of casting large statues and guns; (7) furnaces and methods of melting metals; (8) the making of small castings; (9) miscellaneous pyrotechnical operations, including alchemy, distillation, smithing and pottery; and (10) the making of saltpetre, gunpowder and fireworks. "Virtually all of Biringuccio's descriptions are original. He is important in art history for his description of the peculiarly Renaissance arts of casting medallions, statues, statuettes, and bells. His account of typecasting, given in considerable detail, is the earliest known. The Pirotechnia contains eighty-three woodcuts, the most useful being those depicting furnaces for distillation, bellows mechanisms, and devices for boring cannon and drawing wire..."[It] is a prime source on many practical aspects of inorganic chemistry... Biringuccio's approach is in strong conflict with that of the alchemists, whose work he evaluates in eleven pages of almost modern criticism, distinguishing their practical ac … [Click Below for Full Description]

BODENSTEIN (Adam von) - PARCELSUS PARACESLE] GORDON (Bernard de)
Lyon, Guillaume Rouillé, 1550. 8vo, 910 (ie 920) and (16) pages ; XVIIe calf (spine restored).‎ ‎Exceptionnal copy of this influencal medieval medical works from the library of one of the earliest paracelist, Adam von Bodenstein, early editor and translator of Paracelcius's corpus. The copy bears his autograph signature on title page, different mottos in latine and greek ("Discendo ac ducente deo", "Nihil sine numine faustum prosperumque" and "anerou kai aperou"), and the date of 1557. "Following a stay in Vienna in 1551 Bodenstein was, at least until 1559, in the service of Count Palatinate Ottheinrich, a sovereign favorably disposed toward alchemical Paracelsianism. He appointed Bodenstein in 1553 to the position of servant by order of the house and admonished him several times around 1556 to read Paracelsus. In part because of certain successful therapies with Paracelsian medicine in Basel in 1556, Bodenstein became, about this time, receptive to the medicina nova of Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim (Paracelsus). Whether he was already disseminating Paracelsian thinking and writings in the 1550s (Nutton, 1995, p. 112) remains uncertain; there are no testimonies or proofs of documents. However, undoubtedly Bodenstein s Paracelsian turn combined with an orientation toward transmutational alchemy. Encouraged by an itinerant alchemist (possibly Denis Zecaire) and two friends from Basel, the councillor of the margrave Ludwig Wolfgang of Habsburg and the university mathematician Johannes Acronius. Bodenstein made himself out to be an expert on the philosopher s … [Click Below for Full Description]

WILLICH (Jodocus).
Francofordi, ad Viadrum Joan Eichorn excudebat, 1550. in-12. 4ff. 2 tableaux dépliants. 68ff. chiffrés (i.e. 67) et 1f. (marque de l'imprimeur au verso). Demi-vélin moderne. Edition Originale. "One of the most learned, accomplished and brilliant men of his time ( ). He published works on cookery, anatomy, medicine, etc., and ( ) was about the first to point out the real value of uroscopy" (Ferguson). Que … [Click Below for Full Description]

Estienne, Robert [Robertus Stephanus] [New Testament / 16th century Typography / Typographical Revolution]
Third Edition of Estienne's New testament, the so-called ‚Editio Regia'. Lutetiae [Paris], Ex Officina Roberti Stephani, 1550. Folio (24 cm x 34.5 cm). Collation complete. Pagination: Titlepage with woodcut, [15], 272, [1], 202, [1] pages including colophon. Striking 18th century green morocco with new spinelabels. This important publication has considerable wormhole-damage to the bottom right corner of the bookblock throughout BUT the text is never effected. The wormhole damage has been professionally treated by one of the world's leading bookbinderies and restorers (Bayntun in Bath). The bottom right corner of the titlepage has been professionally restored as an example for possible future restoration of the complete volume. The wonderful morroco binding is firm and fully intact. Despite the wormhole-damage, the binding and the bookblock are in very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. One minor inkstain on pages 103/104. Otherwise the paper bright and strong in print. Especially the fact that the text is not effected by the wormholes makes this typographical masterpiece still a very desirable addition to any collector's library and at a very affordable price for one the most sought after books in printing history of the Renaissance. The Center for the Study of New Testament Manuscripts writes about Estienne's Editio Regia: „Robert Estienne (a.k.a. Stephanus) published four Greek New Testaments in the sixteenth century (1546, 1549, 1550, and 1551). The first three editions of his Novum Testamentum were published in Paris, the fourth in Geneva. Riccardi, II, 138: ‘Bella edizione’. First edition of Mauro’s new translation of the Sphaera and of his annotations and commentaries which include theological and Neo-Platonic interpretations. It reveals Mauro’s compliance with the Church’s opposition to Copernivus which induced him to suppress the remarks on the new discoveries which were in his 1537 Italian version. ‘The theme of the commentary is a compromise and is succintly expressed in the maxim printed on p. 160 (trans.): God is sphere whose center is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere’ (Kraus 104/126).

MUNSTER, Sebastian.
Basle, Henri Petri, 1550. Latin edition. Woodcut, image size 270 x 340mm. Tiny paper repair on top margin, else excellent. Munster's landmark map, the first to attempt to show America as a continent, yet demonstrating how little was known. On the map a narrow isthmus divides the Atlantic and Pacific in the region of the Carolinas, based on Verrazzano, and Yucatan is an island. The large island of Zipangri off the west coast is not California but Japan, based on the narrative of Marco Polo but a few years before any recorded visit to the islands by Europeans. The large vignette ship is the 'Victoria', the only survivor of Magellan's fleet of four. This is an example of the 5th state of 13, despite being published only ten years after the first issue. BURDEN: 12.

MUNSTER, Sebastian.
Basle: Henri Petri, c.1550. Woodcut. Sheet 300 x 380mm. Ptolemy's map of the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh, Burma, the Malay Peninsula and Gulf of Thailand. The 'Aurea Chersonesus' (Golden Chersonese) is probably Sumatra, mistakenly connected to the mainland. The landmass in the bottom right connects Asia to the 'Terra Australis' that created a land-locked Indian Ocean. To the left is a vignette of three exotic birds and an odd-looking lion. From Munster's edition of Ptolemy's 'Geographia'.

MUNSTER, Sebastian.
1550. Basle, c.1560, Latin text edition. Woodcut, printed area 280 x 350mm. A very fine example. Munster's famous woodcut of sea monsters, based on Olaus Magnus' 'Carta Marina' of 1539. Besides a lobster large enough to hold an unfortunate sailor in its claw, there are monsters with the heads of a dog, boar, owl & bull: tusks, horns and twin-spouts abound. One vignette shows a galleon trying to outrun one monster by throwing their cargo overboard. Many of these monsters were adapted by Ortelius for his map of Iceland in 1587.

CERRUTI (Antonio).
Venetiis, cum Privilegiis Pont. Max. [Click Below for Full Description]

Bible. New Testament. Greek. NOVUM IESU CHRISTI D.N. TESTAMENTUM.
Paris: ROBERT ESTIENNE, 1550. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good +. Bible. New Testament. Greek ... NOVUM IESU CHRISTI D.N. TESTAMENTUM. PARIS: ROBERT ESTIENNE, 1550 2 parts in one volume, folio (342 x 217mm.). Long referred to as the Textus Receptus of the Greek New Testament. Although the King James translators apparently worked from Beza editions, those were based on this third Estienne edition. This is also a typographic masterpiece of the French Renaissance. Both iconic Estienne woodcut printer's devices: one (snake and tree) on title-page (and repeated on 273) and, on the final verso, man standing under an olive-tree. Woodcut initials and headpieces, woodcut borders for the canons, ruled in red. 504 pages: 32, 272 [i.e. 268], 204. Eighteenth-century red straight-grained morocco gilt, spine gilt in compartments, edges gilt, painted and gauffered (matching red and gold). Robert Estienne held the office of royal printer and this is his masterpiece, a luxurious folio printed using all three sizes of Claude Garamond's fine Greek fonts (20 point gros-parangon [Royal Garamond], used here for the first time for the main text, as well as 16 point gros-romain and 9 point cicero for the marginalia and notes). The production of the gros-parangon type was paid for by King Henry II. (Armstrong 52) Robert Proctor said of this Greek type that: "it was, and is, by far the best type of its kind that has ever been cut....for evenness of colour, for precision of casting, and for the exactness of alignment and justification, these founts are unsurpassed." (Updike 237). Truly lovely wi … [Click Below for Full Description]

This important historical, artistic, and geographical guide was composed by the Dominican from Bologna Leandro Alberti, who travelled widely throughout Italy and in 1536 was named vicar of Santa Sabina in Rome. Despite its great size, the work became immensely popular, and was read and referenced until the late eighteenth century by many foreign travellers embarking upon the Grand Tour. Alberti's Descrittione has an encyclopaedic character, and its reliance upon earlier antiquarian works – above all Flavio Biondo's influential Italia illustrata – is profound. [Click Below for Full Description]

CAVALCA Domenico (Frate)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Sebastian MUENSTER
Fine example of the second edition of Münster's map of the world, one of the … [Click Below for Full Description]
