First Edition. "The history of the tyrants of Sicily by the so-called Hugo Falcandus is a key source for the history of the medieval kingdom of Sicily. It describes the events of the reign of King William I ‘the Bad’ (1154-66) and the minority of his son, William II ‘the Good’ (1166-89) up to the spring of 1169. These were years of crisis and the 'history' presents a vivid and compelling (though savagely biased) picture of royal tyranny, rebellion and factional dispute at court. The author was both an eye-witness to the events he described and one of the great Latin writers of the Middle Ages." (Manchester University Press edition of the English translation by Graham A. Loud and Thomas Wiedemann, 1998) According to J.W.Thompson (A History of Historical Writing, pp. 222-23), who calls this "one of the most remarkable works of the Middle Ages", Falcandus was not a Sicilian, nor was he French or Spanish, but he maintains that good arguments could be produced to prove that he was an Englishman. He wrote the present work after 1181 because he mentions the death of Alexander III. He lived a long time at Palermo, and the history is in fact more a detailed relation of events in that city during the period in question than a general history of the Kingdom of Sicily. The commerce and manufactures of … [Click Below for Full Description]
