München, Andreas Schobser, 1550. 16 nn. (le. w.), LXXXVII num., 1 w. Bl. "HL". Der Holzstock war bereits 1516 für die Bayer … [Click Below for Full Description]

First printed edition. Octavo [8], 327, blank leaves. Woodcut vignette on title. Contemporary vellum, yapp edges; lacking string ties, owner’s signature clipped from bottom margin of title, generally sound otherwise. (Adams C1173). Dominico Cavalca (~1270-1342) was a prolific writer and highly-regarded saintly figure, many of whose works were printed well before this one. His exposition of the Nicene Creed is essentially the same as that section of the official, post-Council of Trent document written or supervised by Pius IV published shortly after the final session of the Council. The exact understanding of the twelve points of the Creed were part of the issue between the Reformers and the Counter-Reformers. Hence the publication, in counter-reformer territory, of this hitherto-unprinted document. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

MACHIAVELLI Niccolò
1550 [c.1640]. Woodcut portrait of Machiavelli on title page. Typographic battle diagram, double-page woodcut diagram of encampment. Five works in one vol. 4to (225 x 170mm). 8, 320pp; [4], 106pp [1 (blank)]f; [8]ff, 280pp; 152pp; 158pp. Eighteenth-century speckled calf, upper and lower cover with gilt-tooled arms at centre, spine gilt in compartments with four raised bands, title label in second compartment, marbled edges (spine chipped at head, hinges worn but holding, rubbing and wear to extremities). [Geneva, Joseph Stoer pour les Héritiers de Pierre Aubert & Pierre Chouet], Gamba lists five known variants of this edition which closely follow the 1550 original; this copy is the third that he describes, with the same type and form as the preceding two but with a longer page, more ornate vignettes and arabesques, and the italic type used in the preface. Being without printer and place of printing, this is known simply as the 'edizione dalla Testina', 'of the head', for the portrait of Machiavelli printed on the title page and section heads, which is copied from that found in Comin da Trino's edition of the Discorsi (1540). It was likely printed in Protestant Geneva in an attempt to circumvent the Papal ban on Machiavelli's works in the Catholic territories; it has also been posited that the date of 1550 printed here was an attempt to antedate these works to before the ban of 1559. The five volumes here contain the entire corpus of Machiavelli's work, from his Istorie Fiorentine, poetry and plays, to the Discorsi, Il Principe and l'Arte della Guerra, the latter of which co … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Robert Stephanus
Paris: Robert Stephanus, 1550. THERE IS A STORY BEHIND EVERY BLEMISH! Bible leaf collectors know that some leaves are hard to look at and others look as new as the day they left the printing press. The condition of a particular leaf reflects its history and is not an indication of its actual value. Perfect leaves are ones that have seen little or no use over the centuries in contrast to those that are scarred by the ravages of time. Unblemished leaves are unloved leaves because they have had little contact with sinners. Imperfect leaves tell a story. Some are torn and ripped and worn away by excessive use while others have burns or worm holes and still others are water stained by flood and sometimes even tears. Each ugly mark or stain is in fact a beautiful witness to the Word of God, which, "liveth and abideth forever." We offer Bible leaves as we acquire them letting their condition speak for themselves. All our leaves are sold as seen on eBay. You may request additional images and information for any leaf. Richard Sherry
imprynted at London by Iohn Day dwellinge ouer Aldersgate, 1550. First edition, small 8vo (139 x 86mm), ff. [116], collating A-O P; printed in Black Letter throughout; woodcut initials; later vellum-backed marbled boards; title leaf torn at the top margin (no loss); the binding lightly rubbed. Early ownership signature of Thomas Ferrar on the title page; ex-Earls of Macclesfield, with their North Library bookplate on the front pastedown and their blindstamp at the top of the title page. Part of this is a translation of the De civilitate morum puerilium... libellus of Desiderius Erasmus, which was regularly reprinted throughout the 16th century. Rare: ESTC records only 6 copies of this translation, only the Huntington and Yale in the U.S. STC 22484; Alston VI, 8. Sherry's work "is a mirror of one variation of rhetoric which came to be called the rhetoric of style. As a representative of this stylistic school...it carries forward the medieval concept that ornateness in communication is desirable; it suggests that figures [of speech] are tools for achieving this ornateness; it supplies examples of ornateness to be imitated in writing and speaking; it supports knowing the figures in order to understand both secular and religious writings; it proposes that clarity is found in the figures. In short, the work assisted Englishmen to understand eloquence as well as to create i" (Herbert W. Hildebrandt in his introduction to the 1977 facsimile reprint). [Attributes: First Edition]

1550. Bulino, circa 1545/50, monogrammato in lastra in basso a destra. Bibliografia: Bartsch 1; Massari, Raphael Invenit p. 167, 3; Massari, Bonasone; 37. Dimensioni 230x122.
