(NELLI PIETRO)
Cfr. Melzi.

Varthema, Lodovico di.
(Frankfurt/Main, Hermann Gülfferich), 1548. 4to. 220 unnumbered pp. Title page and title woodcut printed in red and black; full-page woodcut on reverse of t. p. and 44 woodcuts in the text by Jörg Breu the elder. Bound with eight contemporary pamphlets. Contemp. blindstamped leather over wooden boards. All edges red. Remains of two clasps. Sixth or seventh, still early German edition of Ludovico di Varthema's famous travels to Arabia, Persia, and India: the highly important and adventurous narrative containing the first recorded visit of a Westerner to Mecca. His description of the Hejaz is especially valuable as it pre-dates the Ottoman occupation of 1520. All early editions of Varthema’s account are exceedingly rare (even the 2013 Hajj exhibition at the MIA, Doha, only featured the 1655 reprint; cf. below). - Varthema, a gentleman adventurer and soldier from Bologna, left Venice at the end of 1502. In 1503 he reached Alexandria and ascended the Nile to Cairo, continuing to Beirut, Tripoli, Aleppo and Damascus, where, adopting Islam and taking the name of Yunas, he joined a Mameluke escort of a Hajj caravan and began the pilgrimage to Mecca. Varthema was amazed by what he observed: "Truly I never saw so many people collected in one spot as during the twenty days I remained there", he begins, and arriving at the Great Mosque, continues, "it would not be possible to describe the sweetness and the fragrances which are smelt within this temple." Thanks to his knowledge of Arabic and Islam, Varthema was able to appreciate the local culture of the places he visited. Impressed an … [Click Below for Full Description]

Francesco Berni
Florence / Firenze: Giunta. Published 1548, in 19th century full vellum with yapp edges, ruddy morocco spine label, [16], 132, [128], 129-293, [2] pages (last page is a blank), very good copy, pp. 77-82 are suspiciously a little brighter than the rest of the pages, but appear to be letterpress pages on old laid paper, moderate occasional very old brown underlining, with the authors of some of the poems attributed in ink at the top of many pages, pp. 104-116 with what appear to be holograph corrections, but some of the ink has faded, title page with some wear and erasures, recornered at top right. Berni's work, satirical and fluid, inspired many poets, to the point that such work was called Bernesque. A rare edition, 4 copies in OCLC - Oxford, Princeton, an Italian library in Geneva, and Bibliotheque Nationale. Very Good.

BIBLIA LATINA
Ad signum Spei, 1548. In 8vo (mm. 150x100). Cc. [8], 620, [4, di cui l'ultima è bianca]. Segnatura: *8 A-Z8 Aa-Zz8 Aaa-Zzz8 Aaaa-Iiii8. Edit 16, CNCE5789..

London: THERE IS A STORY BEHIND EVERY BLEMISH! Bible leaf collectors know that some leaves are hard to look at and others look as new as the day they left the printing press. The condition of a particular leaf reflects its history and is not an indication of its actual value. Perfect leaves are ones that have seen little or no use over the centuries in contrast to those that are scarred by the ravages of time. Unblemished leaves are unloved leaves because they have had little contact with sinners. Imperfect leaves tell a story. Some are torn and ripped and worn away by excessive use while others have burns or worm holes and still others are water stained by flood and sometimes even tears. Each ugly mark or stain is in fact a beautiful witness to the Word of God, which, "liveth and abideth forever." We offer Bible leaves as we acquire them letting their condition speak for themselves. Very Good.

"In 1548 Christophe Milieu (or Christophorus Mylaeus) published in Florence a remarkable book entitled 'Plan for writing the History of the Universe', and three years later he produced an expanded edition, printed in Basel, called 'Writing the History of the Universe of Things'. Virtually unknown and seldom appreciated by students of the Renaissance learning, Milieu has two claims to the attention of modern scholars. He was perhaps the first author to employ the term 'historiae litteraturae' ('history of literature') and to have a critical conception of this genre; and moreover he fundamentally transformed the classical and medieval 'encyclopedia' of arts and science by looking radically to history and to the idea of evolution as … [Click Below for Full Description]

Adriano Castellesi
LUGDUNI APUD SEB. GRYPHIUM 1548 In 16. Dim. 17x11 cm. Pp. 402+(14). [Click Below for Full Description]
