I.V.D.Franc. Curt. aliorumque omnium, qui in id hactenus insudarunt quamdoctiss. Lugduni [Lyon], s.n., 1544. In-folio, 214f.

CONTARINI, Gasparo
Basileae: Froben & Episcopius, 1544. 1544 Gasparo Contarini De Magistratibus VENICE Italy Venetian Politics FrobenGasparo Contarini was a 16th-century Italian bishop who was an important catalyst in communication lines between Catholics and Protestants following the Protestant Reformation. While not a proclaimed Catholic, Contarini was placed in the position as Cardinal by Pope Paul III much in part because of his political influence. As a result of his position, he wrote 'De Magistratibus'.'De magistratibus et republica venetorum' was written as a way of clarifying and describing Venice's system of government. Scholars agree that Contarini wrote this work for foreign dignitaries with hopes of building the mystique and exclusivity of Venetian politics. Gemma Frisius (Dokkum 1508-1555)
"A scarce and interesting woodblock map on a truncated cordiform (heart-shaped) projection surrounded by a vividly engraved border of windheads, mythical figures and clouds. Amongst these gargoyle images are three cadaverous heads blowing the supposedly plague-carrying southerly winds. The map is said to have been based on one, now lost, by Gemma Frisius and was published in Peter Apian's ""Cosmographia ..."". Three very similar woodblock versions of the map are noted, the first published in 1544 with this being the second, identified by the addition of names for Europe, England and Scotland. It is one of the earliest obtainable maps to show a complete, although very narrowed, outline for the entire New World. The second state of this World map which first appeared in the 1544 in Apian's Cosmographia, which was based on a larger map of the world prepared by Gemma Frisius in 1540 in Louvain, of which there is no known example according to Shirley (Entry 82). The map includes a Northwest passage, above which is a fascinating Asian projection. North America, called Baccalearum for its Cod fisheries. The narrow Stra … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hans Sebald BEHAM Nuremberg 1500 - Frankfurt 1550
Bulino, 1544, monogrammato in lastra. Engraving, 1544, signed on plate. A good impression, printed on contemporary paper, trimmed to the platemar, in good conditions. A very good impression of the third state of four, printed on contemporary paper, trimmed to the platemar, in good conditions. Shortly before 1520, several young artists in the immediate circle of Albercht Dürer began making remarkably small engravings that challenged the viewer with a world in miniature; a world of new secular subject and of unconventional interpretations of traditional themes. Because of the scale of their engravings these artists have long been saddled with t … [Click Below for Full Description]

(MYTHOLOGY)
[Woodcuts, 1544. Small 18mo (82 × 71 mm, page size), 10 leaves, with 20 woodcuts with letterpress headings, neat manuscript foliation. Light thumbing. Early nineteenth-century ?English blue straight grain morocco, sides double ruled in gilt, marbled endpapers, each pastedown with two further cut images: a woodcut horseman at the front and an etched 'finis' at the end. Slightly rubbed, but very appealing. A very curious near-miniature album project, evidently made in the early nineteenth century in England, presenting 20 woodcuts cut from a mid sixteenth-century mythological dictionary: Johannes Herold's Heydenweldt (this edition probably Basle, 1554). They include: Jupiter, Mars, Janus, Mercury, Apollo, Neptune, Bacchus, Venus, Vesta and Diana. The tiny woodcuts seem have been neatly cut from the large folio pages of the Hedenweldt and carefully bound, back to back. Each endpaper bears a further illustration, each cut to the image and mounted: a sixteenth-century woodcut of a mounted swordsman at the opening, and an engraved tailpiece of the word 'End' carved on a large boulder at the end. This treatment suggests an English collector's hand: perhaps John Bellingham Inglis (1780-1870) who idiosyncratically adorned many of the books in his fine library with with unrelated woodcuts and engravings, closely cut and pasted to the end papers. . 1544. Template | Trixum Beschreibung (Lando, Ortensio). Paradossi cioe, sententie fuori del comun parere, novellamente venute in luce. Venezia, 1544. 8°. 104 (recte 106) num. ff., 2 ff., with woodcut printer s device and several historiated initials Contemporary limp vellum. - Adams L 119; Gamba, Novelle 129 f.; Papanti 194. Rare second edition of Lando's major work, published the year before in Lyons, France. Although by the time this first Italian edition came out Lando was employed by a cardinal, his anticlerical ciriticism is not mitigated here. As the title announces he undertakes to contradict all sorts of common opinions presenting arguments for paradoxes instead. In a way he does follow an old tradtion of philosophical argumentation when he claims for instance that poverty is better than wealth. His criticism of society, the church and authorities is though rather harsh in places and let to the title being put on the index of forbidden books. In the fourth paradox for example he argues that it is better to be blind than able to see the corruption and misery of Italy. - Armorial bookplate "Biblioteca del Duque de Medinaceli y Santisteban". Some waterstaining to the end but otherwise mostly clean, one leaf with a small marginal tear not affecting the text. Nice. FINE (Oronce)
Paris, Simon de Colines, 1544. Petit in-folio de (12), 107 et (1) pages ; veau brun moderne. Description de l'astrolabe planisphérique d'Oronce Fine. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
