BRAUN, Georg & HOGENBERG, Frans
Cologne: Braun & Hogenberg. unbound. View. Engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 13.5" x 19.25" This plan of Amsterdam, based on Cornelis Antoniszoon's 1544 woodcut plan, shows the city with its medieval walls and defense systems. Published circa 1572, the map celebrates the city's booming commerce and trade by showing its rivers and canals teeming with ships of all sizes. At the center of the city is the dam of the Amstel River, which was lined with public buildings. Red colored roofs of buildings throughout the city accurately depict the common medieval style of Dutch architecture. Among them, the extravagant size of churches indicates their architectural and social prominence. A small key with two figures in the lower left corner identifies these and other important buildings, while text in the upper right corner describes Amsterdam's growing commercial prominence. The city's coat of arms is at the upper left. Latin text on verso. The map is in good condition with few chips and tears, not affecting the image. Candlewax stain on ship near center of bottom edge of image. Georg Braun (1541-1622) was a Catholic cleric who edited the "Civitates orbis terrarum," first printed atlas of the towns of the world. The 6-volume collection comprised 546 prospects, bird's-eye views and maps of international cities, with Hogenberg's collaboration on the first 4 volumes. Together, these two geographers created a work that set new standard for cartography for the next century. This plan of Amsterdam demonstrates the high quality of their work.

Hans Sebald BEHAM Nuremberg 1500 - Frankfurt 1550
Bulino, 1544, monogrammato in lastra. Engraving, 1544, signed on plate. Shortly before 1520, several young artists in the immediate circle of Albercht Dürer began making remarkably small engravings that challenged the viewer with a world in miniature; a world of new secular subject and of unconventional interpretations of traditional themes. Because of the scale of their engravings these artists have long been saddled with the unflattering collective name the Little Masters.

Because of the scale of their engravings these artists have long been saddled with the unflattering collective name the Little Masters. Hans Sebald BEHAM Nuremberg 1500 - Frankfurt 1550
Bulino, 1544, monogrammato in lastra. Engraving, 1544, signed on plate. (The two plates chipped along the fore-edge with minor losses affecting some of the numbering). Expertly bound to style in period vellum. Housed in a black morocco backed box.Provenance: unidentified inscription on title dated 1566; Ex libris Blasij Dasner (inscription on title); Monasterij Rhenoviensis, sub Abbate Eberhardo (inscription dated 1631)Early edition of a noted mid-16th century work on sundials and horology.Second German-language edition, following the first edition printed in Basel in 1531 (in Latin) and the first German-language edition of 1537. This is Muenster's revision of his significant work on sundials and horology. The text is illustrated with many woodcuts of sundials, measuring devices, and quadrants, some of them attributed to Hans Holbein the Younger. This edition appeared the same year as Muenster's famed Cosmographia. This copy is especially interesting for the three early ownership inscriptions on the titlepage, as well as two pages of manuscript diagrams and four pages of manuscript notes that follow the text. One signature on the titlepage, written below the printer's name, is dated 1566 and appears to read "Egodolf." Immediately below it is the undated ownership signature "Ex libris Blasij Dasner." At the top of the titlepage is a manuscript note showing that this volume was in the possession of the monastery "Rhenoriensis" in 1631, under the … [Click Below for Full Description]

GIUSEPPE FLAVIO - PSEUDO EGESIPPO.
(per Michel Tramezino),, In Venetia, 1544. In-8° (155x106mm), ff. (16), 219, (4) [manca l'ultima carta, con l'explicit tipografico], legatura del secolo decimonono in m. pelle e punte con titolo e fregi in oro al dorso. Impresa xilografica al frontespizio. Spazi guida per i capilettera, indice preliminare. Aloni di lieve entità, alcune lievi bruniture. Buon esemplare. Haym, 7;3. Argelati, II, 4. EDIT16 CNCE 35123.
