Tagli marmorizzati. Capilettera delle due opere decorate.Alla carta 1 nota di possesso: Joannis ....Annotazioni in grafia antica e sottolineature nel testo a riprova delle letture che l'antico possessore ne fece.Da carta 385v. inizia l'opera di Antonio MancinelloUn foro di chiodo(?) attraversa il margine delle prime carte.La c. 42 ha è stata restaurata in antico dopo uno strappo che ha allentato la cucitura, per il rseto buon esemplare a margini larghi con qualche piccola macchia.Errori di numerazione alle carte c. 255, 260, 276, 296, 303, 331, 389.Ottaviano Mirandola (Octavianus De Floravantus Mirandulanus) deve probabilmene il nome alla sua città di origine, mentre quello della famiglia era Fioravanti. XV ed il XVI e divenne arcivescovo di Milano; nella lettera di dedica si indica come Canonico regolare lateranense.L'opera, dopo la lettera di Filippo Beroaldi al lettore, e la dedica del Mirandola al Protonotario Apostolico Ottaviano Arcimboldo ha, in questa edizione di Strasburgo, l'elenco dei poeti e l'indice delle materie cui si riferiscono le citazioni di motti e sentenze. [Greek part:] (8), 139; (4), 65, (3) pp. incl. the last blank. Many woodcut diagrams throughout, and a fine woodcut initial to each section. Title-page with 2 small stamps, and a stamp on verso of title-page. The first 4 leaves very lightly browned, occasionally very light marginal browning. One leaf with loss of a small portion of lower right corner, no loss of text. Otherwise very nice and clean. [Latin part:] (8), 163, (1); 68, (4) pp. Many woodcut diagrams throughout, and a fine woodcut intial to each section. Title-page with old ex-libris-inscription: "Dom. prof. Rom. Soc. Jesu. Catal. miseris. Bibliot. Comun." in neat hand. The first ab. 6 leaves with a dampstain to lower blank corner, not affecting text. A bit of brownspotting throughout, mostly very light, and mostly marginal. The Eutochius-section (last 68 pp.) with a bit more brownspotting. This section is marked with an old vellum-strip, indicating where it begins. Vergil, oder auch Virgil (1470 - 1555) aus Urbino lebte die längste Zeit seines Lebens in England, wo er unter dem Einfluß Heinrichs VIII. seine "Historia Anglica" verfaßte. Sein Werk "De inventoribus" erschien zuerst 1499 in Paris. Es handelt von dem Ursprung aller Dinge, seien es geistliche oder weltliche. Folglich stand das Werk auf dem Index. Die Übersetzung ins Deutsche stammt von dem Ingolstädter Juraprofessor Marcus Tatius Alpinus (vgl. Jöcher / Adelung I, 644). Das Bildprogramm umfaßt unter anderem biblische Szenen, Kaufleute im Kontor, Dichter, Musiker, Astrologen, Ärzte, Gerichte, Bibliothek, Kriegshandwerk, Juweliere, Baukunst, Olympische Wettkämpfe und die geistlichen Stände. (1544). 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall. On offer is a superb ancient book VIA CRUCIS [Way of the Cross; Twelve Stations of the Cross]. "Domini Redemptoris ac Salvatoris Nostri Jesu Christim." Twenty-nine [29] printed pages detail the 12 stations of the Cross in the Cruxifiction of Jesus. Pagination begins at page 3 through page 32. Original binding, 4 bands, 5 compartments and while the original title page has been removed there are four [4] manuscript pages including a simple but beautifully handwritten new title page with the word Via rubricated leading to the Oratio. There are seven [7] pages in more lovely calligraphy at the end titled "Officium S. Spiitus". Followed by a number of blank pages. Seems like an ideal book for a pilgrim to record his own journey to the Holy Land. Handwritten is an 'ex libris' noting Ferdinandi de Graes [?] as the owner. The full leather binding is well attached, no cracks, but some small worm holes in the endpaper. Old pencil note dates the book at 1544. All indications agree. Sensational early religious book with elegant manuscript calligraphy.. Latin. Book Condition: Good+. Binding: Full-Leather

On r° leaf 143: MDXLIII Del mese di Decembre, then 2 pages with notes on some popes in a clear contemporary hand, starting with the text: "A'di/10/de/Novembre di A,1549/passo de questa vitapnte Papa Paulo terzo Romano di casa Farnese et questo fu ad mot(?) cavallo la Domenica al ore 13/ et poi fu portato ..; then verso the second leaf the Sibilla woodcut repeated. On top-, & lower edge in a contemporary handwriting in ink respectively: "Chronice universale" & "Catale(sic!)go de anni". Full vellum w. the title on spine in a contemporary hand. Small-8°. Binding a bit worn and soiled, rests of silken vellum-cords, small wormhole on frontside and very small inobtrusive wormholes on first 4 leaves; frontal fly-leaf partly cut; on 3 pp. a few stains and thumbing. Overall well-preserved typographically nicely executed, clean copy. Only 4 copies in major libraries: one copy in the Canadian National Library. One in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek and 2 copies in the Bibliothéque Nationale, Paris; not present in the Italian National Library. B.M. Grande marca della sibilla al frontis. Dedica a Paulus Papa III. Prima edizione rarissima, manca ad Adams, Choix, Moranti e Biblioteca Panizzi. Paris: Rob. Stephani, 1544. Hardcover. First and only Estienne edition. 8vo. pp. 208, [32]. Title page with Estienne device [Renouard Typographiques #294]. Text in italic. Pages are clean and crisp with some mild spotting to the title page. A faint monogram signature in an old hand is present on either side of the printer’s device. Bound in early 19th century straight grained red morocco; spots of rubbing to extremities; with careful restoration to the outer hinges and to the upper corner tip on the front cover. All edges are gilt. The heraldic book plate and monogrammed ticket of English book collector Sir John Hayford Thorold (1773-1831) are pasted on the inside front cover. [See De Ricci, “English Collectors…” plate VIII, also pp. 159-160]. A second heraldic plate from another previous owner is located on the marbled fly-leaf. Contents include the extant historical works of the Roman statesman and author Caius Crispus Sallustius (86-35 b.c.e) [1.] “De conjuratione Catilinae” (On the Catiline Conspiracy) describes events surrounding Lucius Sergius Catilina’s attempts between 65 and 62 b.c.e. to forcefully take over the Roman government [2.] “De bello Jugurthino”(On the Jugurthine War) narrates the war of succession in Numidia (111-104 b.c.e.) where Roman forces sought to intervene in the power struggle between King Jugurtha and his brother Adherbal. Bound in are 13 leaves covered with copious humanist Latin notes in a contemporary hand (6 preceding the title, 7 at end; 1 defective with dampstain damage. Contemporary blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards; metal clasps and catches intact. A collection of 301 extracts from 26 classical and post-classical Latin poets arranged by subject by the Augustinian friar Octavian Mirandula. Added is a literary essay by Mancinelli (1452-1506), one of the most widely read humanist teachers and poets and the undisputed authority on correct Latin phraseology and style. An interesting copy with 26 pages of contemporary manuscript excerpts from the writings of Johann Lorich (d. 1579), humanist from Hadamar, and chancellor, on blank leaves at beginning and at end; with 4 contemporary ownership entries inside front cover and in top blank title margin.
