MOIVRE, Abraham de.
A very nice copy of de Moivre's influential study of annuities based upon the mortality statistics gathered by Edmund Halley in the 1690s. "De Moivre's contribution to annuities lies not in his evaluation of the demographic facts then known but in his derivation of formulas for annuities based on a postulated law of mortality and constant rates of interest on money. Here one finds the treatment of joint annuities on several lives, the inheritance of annuities, problems about the fair division of the costs of a tontine, and other contracts in which both age and interest on capital are relevant. This mathematics became a standard part of all subsequent commercial applications in England" (DSB IX: 454). <br/><br/> ❧Norman 1530; Garrison-Morton 1690. <br/><br/> "De Moivre's preoccupation with matters concerning the conduct of a capitalist society, such as interest, loans, mortgages, pensions, reversions or annuities, dated back at least to the 1690s, from which time a short note survives in Berlin containing his answers to a client's questions. In 1693, using the lists of births and deaths in Breslau for each of the years 1687 to 1691, Edmond Halley had published in the <i>Philosophical Transactions</i> a life table together with applications to annuities on lives, but the amount of calculation involved in extending this to two or more lives turned out to be immense. De Moivre replaced Halley's life table by a (piecewise) linear function, which allowed him to derive formulas for annuities of single lives and approximations for annuities of joint lives as a function of th … [Click Below for Full Description]

BODIN, Jean.
- Adams B2244; Baudrier XI, p. 457; BMC STC German 134; USTC 667010; VD16, B 6275; cf. Hollier, A new history of French literature, pp. 228-230. A well-printed edition of a treatise on the writing of history, with an emphasis on the role of political knowledge in interpreting historical writings, by Jean Bodin (1530-1596), a celebrated historian and political author. "[It] marks the beginning of a new genre, the treatise on historical method and criticism. Bodin's book shifted emphasis from the writing to the reading of history, in effect from an aesthetic to a utilitarian view, and implicitly from narrative to analytical (problem-oriented) form" (Hollier).Bodin's Methodus was first published at Paris in 1566 and went through at least a dozen editions in the 16th century. The present edition was published by Jean Marechal, originally from Lyon, who worked at Heidelberg between 1566 and 1590. His heirs reprinted the book in 1591 and 1592.

LUCANO.
Sans lieu, ni nom d'imprimeur ni date (Anvers?, c.1530). - in-folio. 8ff. 225pp.
Etching and engraving, 1530 circa, without signature. Magnificent work, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, trimmed to the platemark, minor repairs on verso perfectly executed, otherwise in excellent condition. Giacomo Franco represents quite a peculiar figure in the Italian Renaissance graphic world and he is for sure a basic source for the study of classic antiquities and for the style and themes of Michelangelo. Franco was born in Venice and moved to Rome in 1530, where he learned the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Heinrich ALDEGREVER (Paderborn, 1502; Soest, Westfalia, 1555?61)
Bulino, 1530 circa. Engraving, circa 1530. A good impression, printed on contemporary paper, trimmed to the platemar, in good conditions. Shortly before 1520, several young artists in the immediate circle of Albercht Dürer began making remarkably small engravings that challenged the viewer with a world in miniature; a world of new secular subject and of unconventional interpretations of traditional themes. Because of the scale of their engravings these artists have long been saddled with the unflattering collective name the Little Masters. The core of the group consist in three Nuremberg artists, Hans Sebald & Bartel Beham and Georg Pencz, Jacob Bink form Cologne and Heinrich Aldegrever from Soest. PANTHEO, Giovanni Agostino.
Venice, [Giovanni Tacuino], 1530. 4to, ff. 69; title and f. 2v printed in four colours (yellow, green, red and gold, the gold oxidised), title within a woodcut architectural border printed in black and yellow, two headlines (f. 7r and f. 8v) printed in yellow, with a double-page map of Venice and 11 full-page woodcut illustrations; without the final blank; contemporary marginal annotation in margin of f. 42r and some early underlining; some light soiling, part of fore-edge of title cut away and neatly repaired (not affecting image); old vellum.first edition, first issue of this rare alchemical work, highly unusual for its early use of four-colour printing. Pantheo was a Venetian priest who published, in 1518, the alchemical Ars transmutationis metallicae. 'Portions of this were reproduced in the Voarchadumia in 1530, but [it] is quite a distinct work and is much enlarged. Pantheus wrote against spurious alchemy and he deals partly with the assay of gold, which is illustrated by drawings of rolling mills, furnaces of various sorts with the accompanying apparatus and a balance and weights, and partly with the chemical preparation of various substances which were made at Venice in his time and were used in the arts. He describes, for example, the manufacture of white lead and of an alloy for mirrors Pantheus was a priest of Venice, but seems nevertheless to have been devoted to chemical research. The word Voarchadumia – barbarous, as it has been styled by some writers – is compounded, according to the author himself, of a Chaldee word signifying gold, and of a Hebrew expressio … [Click Below for Full Description]

Plautus
Paris: Robert Estienne, 27 January 1530. First Estienne Folio Edition Printer'solive tree device on title-page (Schreiber no. 3) Folio (305 x 202mm), 18th century polished calf, the spine with raised bands gilt ruled and bordered with double gilt fillet lines, red morocco lettering label gilt, the covers with wide gilt fillet rule. [10] 256 ff. A very fine copy, excellently preserved in original state with hinges tight and strong, the calf in beautiful condition, the textblocks clean, crisp and unpressed. This is also a large copy, of significantly greater dimensions than the Schreiber copy. RARE FIRST EDITION IN FINE ANTIQUE CALF OF THE FIRST ESTIENNE FOLIO PRINTING OF PLAUTUS. This was a highly important edition of the comedies of Plautus which was instrumental in the forming of Estienne's highly influential THESAURUS "in which Estienne had virtually founded modern Latin lexicography" (thus replacing the outdated work of Calepinus). Estienne had failed to persuade any suitable scholar to compile a new Latin dictionary and so prepared for this work by reading and making exhaustive notes on the whole of Terence and Plautus; these notes were then written out and put in alphabetical order to form the basis of the new work. The PLAUTUS appeared a year before the THESAURUS but it is not clear whether this edition had already been projected, or whether it was a by product of the dictionary. 'Plautus, the great comic dramatist of Ancient Rome lived until about 184 B.C. according to Cicero. He may, in certain respects be regarded as completely original, viz. i … [Click Below for Full Description]
