Luca. CAMBIASO
Uff.

Ortelius Abraham ( 1527 - 1598 ) Antwerpen
Artist: Ortelius Abraham ( - 1598 ) Antwerpen; issued in: Antwerp; date: ca 1608. - technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; - condition: Perfect condition; - size (in cm): 34,5 x 49,5; - description : Maris Pacifici is the first dedicated map of the Pacific to be printed and is considered an important advancement in cartography. This map was drawn by Abraham Ortelius in 1589, based upon a map of America from the same year that was drawn by Frans Hogenberg. Some details of the map may have been influenced by a 1568 description of Japan in a manuscript by Vaz Dourado. Magellan's ship, the Victoria, is shown in the Pacific as it circumnavigates the globe. Unusually for Ortelius, no source for this famous map is cited on the map itself, although the cartographic source is chiefly Mercator's world map of 1569. The delineation of the Pacific is dominated by the large island of New Guinea, the great southern Continent and the depiction of Magellan's flagship the ;Victoria;, with the quatrain. It widens the gap between Asia and North America while properly locating the Philippines and Japan, although there is an odd Isla de Plata above Japan. North America is depicted considerably narrower and more correctly at the Tropic of Cancer, and the head of the Gulf of California is shown in a new form with the R. Grande being introduced for the first time, although misplaced. The large southern continent, Terra Australis, stretches over the bottom of the map, but the name Tierra del Fuego appears south of the Strait of Magellan.; - vita of the artist: Abraham Ortelius(1527 ñ1598) … [Click Below for Full Description]

FANTI, Sigismondo.
(In fine:) Impresso in la inclita citta di Venegia, per Agostin da Portese ad istantia di Iacomo Giunta mercatante florentino, 1527 nel mese di genaro. in-folio (325x217 mm), ff. (19), CXXVIII (i.e.126), (1), legatura moderna in marocchino blu (firmata Alain Devauchelle) entro astuccio. Quintilianus, Marcus Fabius
Cologne: Apud Eucharium Cervicornum, sumptu et aere M. Godefridi Hittorpii, 1527; and 1526. [4] ll., 330 pp.; [24] ll., 202 pp., [13] ll. Both titles within identical alegorical woodcut border depicting at its base a recumbent Cleopatra pressing adders to her breasts, Dionysus pulling the beard of an old man, etc.; illustrated with woodcut capitals, headpieces and fleurons; first page of NOCTES within large woodcut border depicting the founders of Cologne, Agrippa and Agrippina [all illustrations by Hittorp?]. 1 vols. Folio. Very interesting and beautifully decorated Cologne printings by Cervicornum -- who seemingly specialized in humanistic works and standard Latin classics such as these, working for the publisher Gottfried Hittorp. He may, alas, be best remembered by posterity for his piracy of Erasmus's edition (originally printed by Froben) of Epistolae Tres by Jerome in 1520, as well as Erasmus' Vita Hieronymi, taken from Erasmus' edition of St. Jerome's works printed by Froben in 1516. Neither edition in Adams (but see Q-25 for 1525 ed. of Quintilian by the same printer); OCLC 312995446 (Quintilianus) and OCLC 7686353 (Aulus Gellius). Contemporary calf, covers elaborately ruled and tooled in blind; spine perished; internally, some soiling and staining throughout, but sound; in a quarter morocco slipcase with chemise.

His early career is that of a businessman and most of his journeys before 1560 are for commercial purposes. In 1564 he completed a "mappemonde", eight-leaved map of the world, which afterwards appeared in reduced form in the Theatrum. The only extant copy of this great map is in the library of the University of Basle (cf. Bernoulli, Ein Karteninkunabelnband, Basle, 1905, p. 5). He also published a two-sheet map of Egypt in 1565, a plan of the Brittenburg castle on the coast of the Netherlands in 1568, an eight-sheet map of Asia in 1567, and a six-sheet map of Spain before the appearance of his atlas. Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. In 1573 Ortelius published seventeen supplementary maps under the title Additamentum Theatri Orbis Terrarum. Four more Additamenta were to follow, the last one appearing in 1597. He also had a keen interest and formed a fine collection of coins, medals and antiques, a … [Click Below for Full Description]

MACHIAVELLI, Niccolò (1469-1527)
Bernardo Giunta, 1527. 4to (205x133 mm). [4], 9-224 leaves. Signatures: [A]4B-Z8 AA-EE8. As in many copies, lacking the final 4 leaves (quire FF4) containing the errata (ll. FF1-2), a blank FF3, and the printer's device (FF4v). Moreover, due to a mistake in the composition of quire S, leaves 139v, 140r, 141v, and 142r have been omitted, while leaves 139r, 140v, 141r, and 142v are incorrectly repeated. Printer's device on the title page. Contemporary flexible vellum (recased, new endleaves). Preserved in a cloth case. Slightly browned, light marginal damp stains, all in all a very good, genuine copy. RARE FIRST FLORENCE EDITION, possibly the first edition overall, of this landmark of historiographical literature. After Machiavelli's death in 1527 there was a rush to publish his remaining works, and a fierce competition began between the Roman printer Blado and the Florentine printer Guinta to be the first to press. Although Giunta had been given the approval of Machiavelli's heirs and rushed to honor his fellow Florentine with elegant editions of his works, both Blado's and Giunta's editions of "The Florentine History" appeared almost simultaneously. It is generally presumed that Blado's Roman edition, dated 25 March 1532, preceded Giunta's by two days. Some copies of the Giunta edition, (as in the present copy), are dated 27 March 1532 in the colophon, while others are dated 16 March 1532. It is possible that Giunta printed an incorrect 16 March date to convince the public that his edition was indeed the first and to match the date of Giunta's dedication to the duke Alessan … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alighieri Dante
Florence Filippo Giunta's heirs 6 July 1527. 8° (160x100 mm). Collation: AA4, a-s8, t4. [4], 148 leaves. Italic and roman type. Woodcut printer's device on the title-page and on the verso of the last leaf. Nineteenth-century half-vellum, marbled covers. Spine with title in gilt on red morocco lettering-piece. Red silk bookmark. A very good copy, a few small stains to fols. AA4 and a1. Light foxing in places. The rare first edition of the remarkable collection known as the 'Giuntina di rime antiche', the first anthology in print which contains Dante's canzoniere along with lyrics composed by poets of the Dolce Stil Novo tradition. Edited by Bardo di Antonio Segni, member of a distinguished Florentine family, this anthology is an authentic monument to Italian vernacular poetry. In his prefatory letter, the printer Bernardo Giunta addressed the publication to the Amatori de le toscane rime, i.e., admirers of Tuscan poetry, inviting them to read and study the early vernacular lyric tradition, and Dante's poems above all. The Giuntina di rime antiche is divided into eleven books (not ten, as erroneously stated in the title), and includes the texts of about three hundred poems, most of which had never previously appeared in print. The entries are grouped by metrical form and are almost entirely by Tuscan authors, although works from the Sicilian and Bolognese Schools are also included, with the former being represented by Giacomo da Lentini, Guido delle Colonne, and Pier delle Vigne, to name a few, and the latter by Guido Guinizelli and Onesto degli Onesti, among others. The first … [Click Below for Full Description]
