The title-page to the index, here bound before the text, has the initials of the printer Nicolaus Sauetier. - The original text was by Gaius Plinius Secundus (AD 23-79), better known as Pliny the Elder. He was a Roman author, naturalist, and natural philosopher, as well as naval and army commander of the early Roman Empire, and personal friend of the emperor Vespasian. - The "Naturalis Historia" is one of the largest single works to have survived from the Roman empire to the modern day and purports to cover the entire field of ancient knowledge, based on the best authorities available to Pliny. He claims to be the only Roman ever to have undertaken such a work. It comprised 37 book … [Click Below for Full Description]

AUGUSTINE, Saint.
KVK & WorldCat (2 copies); NK 148 (2 copies); STCN (1 copy); USTC (4 copies, some no longer located); for the woodcut border: NAT V, 21. Rare first and only edition of a highly original selection of fragments from the works of Saint Augustine (354-430) assembled by an unknown humanist with the clear intention of defending the Catholic faith against the numerous kinds of reformers and heretics active in northern Europe in those days, and to bring back straying believers to the true faith. The compiler of this anthology, who dated his preface 23 March [1526?], has not been identified, but Albert Paffraet (d. 1553), the son of the more famous printer Richard Paffraet, published many books by contemporary humanists such as Erasmus, Murmellius, Reuchlin and Angelo Poliziano, including both pamphlets inspired by the ideas of the Reformation and defences of the traditional faith. With ower's inscriptions and stamps. With some small wormholes in the last few leaves, but otherwise in very good condition. The binding has been repaired, with a paper board replacing the back wooden board but covered by the original calf and the manuscript pastedown, three old patches on and near the spine (with the loss of the headbands) and the joints cracked. An interesting selection of fragments from the works of Saint Augustine.

Legatura in p. pg antica. Cassiodorus wanted to make in this manual their works known to the clergy in the West, who couldnot read Greek any longer. In the praefatio, written by Cassiodorus himself it says, the church historian Theodoretus is called Theodoricus twice. Cassiodorus tells the reader that Epiphanius Scholasticus translated the text of the 'Hystoria', and that he himself corrected faults of style, and diction, and arranged it into one continuous history. Epiphanius did so 'domino prestante'. This probably means that Cassiodorus helped Epiphanius. It seems that Epiphanius was an insubordinate of Cassiodorus, who was called by him 'master'. Epiphanius might have been a chaplain, an amanuensis, or a general assistant. (See Du Cange, Glossarium, s.v. Scholasticus). The NP says that … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Erasmus von Rotterdam.
Basel, (Johann Froben, August) 1526.. (212) Bll. (a-z8 A-B8 C4 D8). (Beigebunden) II: Ders. Moriae encomium, id est, stulticiae laudatio [...]. Basel, (Hieronymus Froben d. I: Erste Ausgabe, sehr selten. The 'Institution of Christian Matrimony', 'one of his purest and most beneficial treatises' (Huizinga), was written for Catharine of Aragon, Queen of England, whose request was conveyed to him through her chamberlain, Lord Mountjoy, in 1524 or 1525. While the latter half of the work is purely ethical and contains some of Erasmus' best writing, the first half is concerned with the theological and legal aspects of marriage. Erasmus defines marriage as the legitimate union of man and woman, considers the evils of divorce, and discusses the choosing of mates, the conduct of married life, etc. Most interesting are his remarks on the education of children, especially on the bringing up of girls, which throw many sidelights on contemporary customs" (Gilhofer & Ranschburg L … [Click Below for Full Description]

Homer; Translated by Alexander Pope
London: Bernard Lintot, 1715-26. First editions of Alexander Pope's monumental illustrated translations of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. Quarto, Subscribers edition. 11 volumes, uniformly bound in full contemporary calf, gilt titles and tooling to the spine and corner ornaments, rebacked. The bookplate in each volume of Sir John C. Hobhouse. Hobhouse (1786-1869) was Lord Byron's close friend, literary confidante and executor. Frontispiece portrait in first volume of each work, engraved title vignette in second, folding map and folding view of the Siege of Troy, engraved head and tail pieces, decorated initials. Light offsetting in first four volumes of The Iliad, which is often encountered. The Odyssey, apart from some occasional marginal dusting, is generally crisp and fresh. Laid in is a one page autograph noted signed, undated, to Hobhouse, endeavoring to arrange a meeting, signatory illegible. An exceptional set of first editions with notable provenance. The subscribers list for the Iliad lists 575 subscribers, including Addison, Congreve, Newton, Steele and others; that for The Odyssey are 610 (including those in the supplementary list appended to the final volume). For the Odyssey, Pope was assisted by Elijah Fenton and William Broome, and pencil notes in the texts identify the responsible party for the specific Books and Notes. That those pencil annotations and incidental others in pencil in the same hand scattered elsewhere are Hobhouse's seems probable, as a pencil note in a quite similar (or same) hand appears at the conclusion of the Postscript to the final volume … [Click Below for Full Description]
