Melchior Lotter. THERE IS A STORY BEHIND EVERY BLEMISH! Bible leaf collectors know that some leaves are hard to look at and others look as new as the day they left the printing press. The condition of a particular leaf reflects its history and is not an indication of its actual value. Perfect leaves are ones that have seen little or no use over the centuries in contrast to those that are scarred by the ravages of time. Unblemished leaves are unloved leaves because they have had little contact with sinners. Imperfect leaves tell a story. Some are torn and ripped and worn away by excessive use while others have burns or worm holes and still others are water stained by flood and sometimes even tears. Each ugly mark or stain is in fact a beautiful witness to the Word of God, which, "liveth and abideth forever." We offer Bible leaves as we acquire them letting their condition speak for themselves. All our leaves are sold as seen on eBay. You may request additional images and information for any leaf. Choice Leaves, Finer than Gold, from the Word of God Taste and see! It's sweeter than honey!! 1526. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. 1526 RARE La Sophonisba Trissino Italian Renaissance Tragedy Punic Wars Theatre An early printing of Trissino's famous tragedy La Sophonisba. Gian Giorgio Trissino (1478 - 1550), also called Giovan Giorgio Trissino, was an Italian Renaissance humanist, poet, dramatist, diplomat, and grammarian. In the history of modern European literature Trissino occupies a prominent place because of his tragedy Sophonisba (c. 1515; published 1524). Based on the life of the Carthaginian lady Sophonisba and inspired by ancient tragedies, it was perhaps the first tragedy in early modern times to show deference to the classic rules. It served as an example for European tragedies throughout the 16th century. Sophonisba (fl. 203 BC) was a Carthaginian noblewoman who lived during the Second Punic War, and the daughter of Hasdrubal Gisco Gisgonis (son of Gisco). In an act that became legendary, Sophonisba poisoned herself rather than be humiliated in a Roman triumph. N.P., N.P. N.P.: N.P., 1526. In Latin. Beautifully preserved Roman Catholic missal in a period binding. No printer or date - someone wrote 1515 in pencil on the front free endpaper but the anchor and star watermark on the paper suggests Verona 1526, so we are unsure. Book begins with page numbered 1 which is bordered with intricate wood engravings, printed throughout in black and vermilion, short stanzas of music throughout, occasional wood engraved initials, 228 pages (numbered 1-114 on the right hand pages only). Early tooled leather over wooden boards with metal corners and center medallions on front and back, covers about 12.25 inches tall. Expected age-related wear, one metal corner on rear cover absent, only one rear portion of former clasps still present, endleaves possibly slightly later with front hinge repair made of a strip of old vellum. Pages very clean with a very small lower corner chip to one leaf without loss of text, very minor dampstaining to inner margins of first few pages, text not affected, no names or other markings. . Hard Cover. Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Martin Luther
DEL MAINO, GIASONE [JASON DE MAYNO]
Lyon: J. Crespin for J. Giunta, 23 October 1526. This is a rare Lyon edition of a legal textbook by a renowned Italian jurist in a binding decorated with stamps attributed to the Antwerp binder Johannes de Dutche, also known as L'Allemans. The illegitimate son of an Italian nobleman, Del Maino (1435-1519) studied at the University of Pavia, where he subscribed to the views of the great Medieval jurist Bartolus de Saxoferrato on Roman law. A brilliant orator, he taught at the law schools of Pavia, Padua, and Pisa in addition to writing books of commentary on the Justinian Corpus Juris. The present work is a "very clear" [Praeclarissima] guide to causes of action and lawsuits. The attractive binding can be traced to a Flemish workshop. Fogelmark identifies these panels showing John the Evangelist, accompanied by his eagle, writing his gospel on Patmos, as "the Johannes de Dutche panel," noting specimens of it in the Royal Library in Brussels and the State Library in Augsburg. According to Weale, de Dutche was admitted to the bookbinders' guild in Antwerp in 1502, and was still in business there in 1509. His talent is evident in the design of the Saint John panel: the Evangelist sits, legs crossed, beneath a tree, writing on a scroll, while his eagle stands facing him, its legs similarly arranged, holding the saint's inkwell in its beak. We can see tufts of grass, barren limbs, and distant mountains beneath a starry sky. The level of detail is impressive, and the scene is remniscent of those in miniatures from Books of Hours. This volume was once in the collection of the grea … [Click Below for Full Description]

A little sign of this collaboration is a peculiarity - as far as I know - of Henri's setting of printed marginalia in a vertical line. Colines did not change that, but took it over from Henri's 1506 and 1511 editions and used it at least in the present edition - found here in the Hecatonomiae, a Leonardi Bruni compilation of texts of Plato's Laws … [Click Below for Full Description]

BIANCHINI, Giovanni.
Giunta Lucantonio, Venice. First edition edited by Luca Gaurico, second edition overall (first, 1495), of ?the largest set of astronomical tables produced in the West before modern times? (Chabas & Goldstein, p. viii). ?Bianchini set out to achieve a correction of the Alfonsine Tables ? the standard in Europe for a couple of centuries by the time he wrote ? with those of Ptolemy. He was a great admirer of Ptolemy and critical of the corrupted Ptolemaic and Alfonsine texts then in current use? (Tomash, p. 141). This second edition contains almost twice as much astronomical data as the first. ?Bianchini?s set of auxiliary tables for computing planetary latitudes in the edition of 1526 was not included in the editio princeps of 1495, despite the fact that these tables appear in manuscript copies ? they appear in a manuscript copied by Copernicus? (Goldstein & Chabas, p. 458). Bianchini was ?the first mathematician in the West to use purely decimal tables? (Feingold, p. 20), at the same time as Al-Kashi in Samarkand, and he also used negative numbers and the rule of signs. Bianchini (d. 1469), an astronomer attached to the Ferrara court of the Este, was considered by his disciple Regiomontanus to be the greatest astronomer of his time, and his Tabulae was one of the most sophisticated and widely-disseminated fifteenth-century attempts to correct the Alfonsine Tables, the thirteenth-century planetary tables that were relied upon by all astronomers and navigators well into the sixteenth century. Gregorio de Gregorii, Venice, 1526. 4to. (204x143 mm). [4], 73, [1] leaves. Collation 4 A-H8 I6 K 4, One on the first tangible result of this interest is its legacy to lexicography: the first monolingual dictionary of italian was published in Venice in 1526. Wich could be translated as The three fountains of master Nicolo Liburnio, in three volumes, following the grammar and eloquence of Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio. First edition of this important work, which represents the first history of Italian linguistic tradition. In Le tre the humanist Liburnio illustrates the language and syntax employed by the three Crowns, i.e. Dante Alighieri, Francesco Petrarca, and Giovanni Boccaccio, contrasting the linguistic reform proposed by Gian Giorgio Trissino. The first Book contains the well-known Difesa di Dante. These three great authors (the three fountains, or sources of eloquence) are used as models, in keeping with the position expressed by the lexicographer in one of his previous works. Palau VI, 408. Bosch I 144. Sim¢n D¡az XV 894.

JOSEPHE (Flavius).
