Sutor, Petrus. Erasmus defends vernacular Bible translation against Sorbonne traditionalist fanatics
Paris, Pierre Vidou, 1525. Sutor, Petrus (Cousturier, Pierre). De Tralatione Bibliae, et novarum reprobatione interpretationum. Vaenundantur Parisiis apud Joannem Parvum Bibliopolam adscribtitium, sub insigni floris Lilii, via ad divum Iacobum, Cum Privilegio. Paris, Pierre Vidou for Jean Petit , 1525. 4to. [4] + 101 + [1]f. Roman letter. 25 large ornamental criblé initials, each serving for 3 preliminary and 22 chapter openings. Title within fine architectural woodcut border including royal arms and the arms of the city of Paris in top panel, surrounding Jean Petit’s large ornamental bookseller’s device incorporating a tree and a shield with his initials and a lily, supported by 2 lions. Contemporary limp vellum with title inscribed on backstrip in ink calligraphy. First edition of a fanatical condemnation of vernacular Bible reading by the Sorbonne theologian and Carthusian monk, Pierre Cousturier (c1474-1537), who fiercely opposed the leading humanist reformers’ idea of furthering lay people’s understanding of the Holy Scriptures through translation. The author believed the concept to be misguided and radical, arguing it could lead to error and heresy; he thought a knowledge of languages unnecessary and strongly advocated the retention of the Vulgate. Title verso with privilege dated 5th December 1524. The publication of this book resulted in an acrimonious correspondence in the same year between the author and Desiderius Erasmus (c1466-1536) who vainly attempted to reason with him (cf: P.G.Bietenholz & T.B.Deutscher: Contemporaries of Erasmus (Toronto 1985) p352.

GROSSBRITANNIEN (Great Britain / British Isles):
- Holzschnitt v. Lorenz Fries aus Clavdii Ptholemaei Alexandrini Geographicae Enarrationis, Libri Octo. . b. Johannes Grüninger in Straßburg, 1525, 32 x 41 Shirley, Early Printed Maps of the British Isles 1477-1650, 18 - Zeigt Grossbritannien mit Irland. - Über der Karte Titelkopfleiste ('Tabula Moderna Hiber'.) Three years after the first edition (1522) Gruninger printed a second edition, for the Nuremberg publisher Johann Koberger. - Apparently faced with criticism of the text in the First Edition, Gruninger employed Wilibald Pirckheimer to edit it, which he did from the notes of Johannes Regiomontanus, perhaps under the overall editorship of Johann Huttich. - The text on the verso of the map is flanked by ornamental woodblock, which have been attributed - probably wrongly - to Albrecht Durer, who contributed the woodcut of the armillary sphere found just before the section of maps. - Pirckheimer seems to have been unhappy with the finished volume, encouraging Gruninger to burn the entire print run. - It would seem plausible that the 1525 edition also did not sell well, and nothing further is heard of the blocks until they re-emerge in the possession of the Lyons brothers, Gaspar and Melchior Trechsel, who printed the two subsequent editions (mapforum). Ptolemaeus, Claudius.
STRASSBURG JOHANNES GRÜNINGER FOR JOHANNES KOBERGER 3 APRIL 1525 - Folio (40.5 x 26.3 cm.), printed title within elaborate woodcut border, 27 double-page maps of the ancient world, 22 double-page maps of the modern world, one full-page map of Lotharingia on verso of map 46, together 50 woodcut maps, most with Latin text on versos enclosed in elaborate woodcut borders, mounted on vellum guards, woodcut diagrams in the text (one by Dürer), including one full-page of an armillary sphere. Contemporary half blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards, two clasps, lacking one strap, a most handsome example. A fine example of the Fourth Strassburg edition of Ptolemy. The work includes the first printed map in an edition of Ptolemy to name America, the first printed map of Southeast Asia, and the first printed map of China. The list of contributors is a veritable 'who's who' of German Renaissance publishing: the text was translated by Wilibald Pirckheimer, using the notes of Johannes Regiomontanus, perhaps under the editorship of Johann Huttich; the ornamental woodblock designs on the reverse of the maps are attributed to Albrecht Duerer, who also contributed the woodblock of the armillary sphere. The present edition was printed for Johann Koberger by Johann Grüninger, using the woodblocks of the first Grüninger edition of 1522. The woodcut maps in the trapezoid shape developed by the German cartographer Nicolaus Germanus in 1460 comprise 27 maps according to Ptolemy as well as 23 "modern" maps (Tabula Moderna) according to the knowledge of the time. The "modern section" was copied by … [Click Below for Full Description]

I 8 verso (Heitz Tafel XIX, Nr. 12), alles ankoloriert. Blindgepr. Schweinsleder d. Zt. [Click Below for Full Description]

TEXT: This unusually para-liturgical, bilingual manuscript offers the Psalms, hymns, and canticles of the Breviary with a verse-by-verse Dutch translation of the Latin and, as such, may be considered an abridged Lay Breviary; some textual components commonly found in a Breviary, such as a calendar, are absent in this manuscript, but in essence it gives the texts needed for the Divine Office during the liturgical year. The Dutch translation accompanying the Latin text reflects a tendency to worship in the vernacular, which, in the Low Countries, had started with the religious movement called Devotio Moderna, led by Geert Grote (1340-1384), who him … [Click Below for Full Description]

HIPPOCRATES
[colophon:] Rome, Marco Falvio Calvo, 1525. Folio (300 x 209 mm), pp [lxxxiv] 733 [recte 732] [2, without terminal blank], title within ornamental woodcut border; top of title woodcut border slightly cropped in binding as often, some occasional ink spots or other staining, otherwise a very good copy in eighteenth-century vellum.First collected edition. 'This is the first complete Latin edition of the works of the greatest of clinical physicians. What is now known as the "Hippocratic collection" is a large corpus of works - the number varies between fifty-nine and a hundred - which was probably in existence in Alexandria by about 300 B.C. The present edition contains eighty works ?'Hippocrates first established an empirical system of medicine based on a combination of bedside experience and a collation of the many individual data which then formed the basis of clinical teaching. The clinical descriptions of fevers, phthisis, puerperal convulsions, epilepsy and other disorders have remained classics and no such records were kept again for over a thousand years.'The treatise on the surgery includes treatment of dislocations and fractures, trephining the skull, descriptions of surgical instruments, rules on public health and diagnosis, a famous work on the brain, on the theory of the four humours, and many others. Laennec specifically acknowledges his debt to the Hippocratic writings in relation to the invention of the stethoscope. The most celebrated section of all is probably the "Aphorisms".'The ideal of the humane and learned physician originates with Hippocrates, and the " … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rome: Franciscus Minutius Calvus. 1525.. FIRST EDITION. Folio, 200mm x 308mm, pp. [lxxxiiii], 733, [i]; lacking last blank, colophon supplied in facsimile. Remboitage 16th century, blind stamped pigskin over oak boards. Thin stamped-brass clasps to style. Title page, with woodcut border, trimmed as usual at the top, but only very slightly and certainly with better results to the upper margin than most copies. Pinhole to front flyleaf. Occasional marginal ink notes and underlining in an early hand. 'This is the first complete Latin edition of the works of the greatest of all clinical physicians' (Printing and the Mind of Man). Various fragments of Hippocrates' works had been published in earlier Greek and Arabic editions, but this is the first version with 80 works translated into Latin. Regarded as the first complete edition of works attributed to the Father of Medicine, it is one of the most important didactic medical books of all time. From the John Rathbone Oliver History of Medicine Collection, with his bookplate to pastedown. John Rathbone Oliver (1872-1943), was a Harvard graduate, classical scholar, physician specialising in psychiatry, and served as Chief Medical Officer to the Supreme Bench of Baltimore from 1917 until 1930 as well as professor of the History of Medicine at the University of Maryland Medical School, from 1927 until 1938. Oliver was a relative of the murdered physician George Parkman (1790-1849), a fact which roused his initial interest in criminal psychiatry; his Criminological Collection resides at the Boston Medical School. LAUTENSACK, Heinrich
Title in red and black. With printer's device (Heitz, Frankfurter und Mainzer Drucker und Verleger Zeichen, 90), 3 folding woodcut plates, and 107 woodcut text illustrations. Early vellum, new endpapers; title remargined, occasional soiling and some browning to extremities, otherwise a nice copy with sharp impression to the plates. Preserved in a clamshell box. First edition of this rare treatise on perspective and draughtsmanship, important for its use by artists, architects, and goldsmiths. The woodcuts are all the author's original work, though he was clearly influenced by Leonardo and Dürer. The text begins with elements of linear geometry, and moves towards more detailed presentations of two - dimensional figures and the construction of stereometrical bodies. The third part, on human proportion, owes much to Dürer's Vier Bucher von Menschlicher Proportion (1525); this section also includes woodcuts illustrating the proper proportions of a horse. Lautensack's discussion of perspective is accompanied by illustrations of basic geometrical forms, ending with a fine folding plate depicting the Emperor's Hall in the Römer, Frankfurt's city hall and the site of the coronation of the Holy Roman Emperors. An early imprint from the famous Feyerabend publishing dynasty, the author's preface indicates that the printing of this work began on July 26, 1563. Lautensack (1522 - 68), an artist, goldsmith, and woodblock - cutter, lived in Frankfurt am Main. He was influenced by his father, Paul, and by his brother, Hans Sebald Beham, both skilled painters and engravers. This book is ext … [Click Below for Full Description]

HIPPOCRATES
Rome: in the shop of Francisco Minutius Calvo,, 1525. Folio (281 x 207 mm). Modern vellum to style, retaining old edges with title lettered in manuscript to lower edge. Woodcut title page border, Roman, italic and gothic types, table of contents in double columns, index in three columns, printed shoulder notes, large woodcut initials. A very good copy, clean and tall, with the head of the woodcut title page, which is usually found trimmed, entirely unshaved. First edition of the first complete Latin edition of the works of the best known physician of the ancient world. The collection consists of more than seventy books on medicine, of which the Aphorisms and the Airs, Waters and Places are among the most important: the section on epidemics is of great interest as are the clinical descriptions such as pneumonia, malaria and mumps. Descriptions of the ancient instruments are an interesting part of the surgical writings. Hippocrates proscribed a code of medical ethics for his disciples, summarised in the traditional Hippocratic Oath still administered today to physicians on qualification. Marcus Fabio Calvo of Ravenna, a friend of Raphael, prepared a complete Latin translation of the Hippocratic corpus, collating and writing out his own manuscript of the Greek text, depending mainly on a 14th century manuscript, but also consulting a 12th century codex that is one of the oldest and most important Hippocratic manuscripts. The source manuscripts and Calvo's Greek text and Latin translation are preserved in the Vatican Library. These texts form the so-called Hippocratic Corpus, a … [Click Below for Full Description]

8vo. Paris: Franciscus Regnault, 1525. 8vo, (10), 230 ff. Title page in red and black, with printer?s device of elephant. Original calf (backstrip restored) blind-stamped with the arms of Henry VIII on the upper cover and the Tudor rose on the lower cover. Two preliminary leaves with lower corners torn away with loss of text; leaves at front and back loose and detaching. Heavily annotated in a few early hands. In folding box with ?Royal Copy? in gilt on backstrip. A canon law treatise by Raymond of Penyafort (circa 1175 - January 6 1275 ), a Spanish Dominican who is the patron Saint of lawyers. An early and very rare edition, of especial interest for its English provenance and annotations in early English hands. De Hamel has called this book ?a typical parish priest?s textbook.? It is signed i.a. by ?William Hogges? and it is probably he who has added folk medicines and herbal remedies at front and back (?medsyn for wartz? e.g.) as well as proverbs in English and Latin one of which includes a very early reference to Robin Hood. A long description by an earlier dealer gets almost everything wrong but identifies the binding as probably by Garrett Godfrey (see Nixon, Five Centuries, p. 28) which might be so. WorldCat locates one copy only world-wide.

Hours. Book of Hours Spanish
- [Spain: c. 1525-1550]. Thick 8vo, 160 x 118 mm, 157 vellum leaves (of 168?), bound in 8s, written in Latin in black ink in a single fine black letter Gothic Rotunda hand with rubrics in red in Spanish, fine 5-line opening illuminated initial in gold on a blue background, hundreds of initials in red, blue, and green in the text some two-line and most one-line. Imperfect as noted below. Original or very early calf over wooden boards, covers with a simple gilt double fillet rectangle enclosing two gilt fleurons, gilt fleurons at corners of rectangles on both covers. Upper cover detached, top corner of f.1 neatly cut away (20 x 30 mm). Old bookplate of Charles Walker Andrews with motto Òcum grano salisÓ.
