MELA, Pomponius.
EDIT16, BVEE001701; USTC 841937; cf. Adams M1056-1065 (eds. of 1522-1595); BMC STC Italian, pp. 431-432 (other eds.). Rare 1502 edition, the third in the best and most important early recension of Pomponius Mela's description of the world, written ca. AD 43, the earliest surviving geographical work in Latin and one of Pliny's most important sources, perhaps the most important for geography. Pomponius describes Europe, Africa and Asia, the three together surrounded by the ocean. He was at born in southern Spain (we don't know where he wrote) and shows a more detailed and more accurate knowledge of Spain, France and the British Isles than earlier writers (giving us our first known reference to the Orkney Islands) and even knows of the existence of Scandinavia. But he also devotes book I, chapter VI to "Arabia", which includes not only the Arabian peninsula but also "Syria" (which includes what is now Iraq) and other parts of the Middle East, and his description of India in book III, chapter IV, gives further information about what seem to be the Arabian and Iranian coasts of the Gulf, Egypt, Iraq, the island of Masirah and the cities of Aden and Harran. With a few early manuscript notes and the armorial bookplate of the Bibliotheca Giustiniani, showing the (1773?) arms of the Padua branch of the family, but perhaps nevertheless referring to the library of the Venetian palace acquired in 1590 by the Genoese Giuseppe Giustiniani, which dispersed some of its treasures in the late 19th century. With a small worm hole in the lower gutter margin of the first 6 leaves, a defect in th … [Click Below for Full Description]

DIEPOLD, Johannes
Augsburg: Erhard Oeglin, 1522. First edition. Johannes Diepold had joined the Reformation early on, in Weil der Stadt near Stuttgart, preaching the gospel, and later moved to Ulm where he reached a wider and more appreciative audience. The two sermons in the present flugschrift are perhaps his best known: the first, on the mission to proclaim the word of God--a tenet strongly encouraged in the workings of the Reformation--; and the second concerns the conscience of man with respect to God. A very good copy with an appealing floral woodcut title border. VD16 D1430; BM, STC German 241; Kuczynski 585

Diepold, Johannes
Augsburg: Ulhart, 1522. First edition. Important sermon on Mark 10.13 ("Let the children come to me") in which the Ulm Lutheran theologian Johannes Diepold (here Diebold) reputedly first developed the Protestant doctrine of Mercy and Justification. The latter, meaning essentially establishment of a relationship with God through Christ, is different in every faith, but for Luther and the Reformation, it came from salvation and grace. Luther later laid out his concept of justification in the Smalcald Articles, in 1537:"The first and chief article is this: Jesus Christ, our God and Lord, died for our sins and was raised again for our justification (Romans 3:24-25). He alone is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29), and God has laid on Him the iniquity of us all (Isaiah 53:6). All have sinned and are justified freely, without their own works and merits, by His grace, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, in His blood (Romans 3:23-25). This is necessary to believe. This cannot be otherwise acquired or grasped by any work, law or merit. Therefore, it is clear and certain that this faith alone justifies us ... Nothing of this article can be yielded or surrendered, even though heaven and earth and everything else falls (Mark 13:31)."A good copy with an attractive woodcut border. Luther, Martin
Augsburg: Silvan Otmar, 1522. Preached on the 25th of July, 1522, Luther's sermon on James the Greater, or James, the son of Zebedee, was addressed to those taking the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostella in Galicia. James, called the Greater to distinguish him from James the Less (or the Just, in the Western Church), is the patron saint of Spaniards, and the pilgrimage to his tomb is known as Camino de Santiago or The Way of St. James. It was one of the most important pilgrimages a medieval Christian could undertake, and one through which a plenary indulgence could be earned. The present work is either a second edition or a second issue of a first edition. With an attractive four-part historiated woodcut title border by Urs Graf illustrating Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John and their symbols. Laurent Fries published in 1522 a new edition of the Geographia, with new maps drawn by Waldseemuller, re-engraved in a smaller size. The work is made of 50 maps; 27 derive from Ptolemy, 20 are the so called "modern ones" and 3 depict the South-East of Asia, China and Japan, and a sea chart of the New World. The first edition of Fries' Geographia was bitterly criticized for its text; for that reason, the publisher Gruninger hired for the translation Willibald Pirckheimer who used Johannes Regiomontanus' notes; Johann Huttich supervised the whole project. The text, on verso on each map, was enriched with beautiful and decorative woodcut drawings, ascribed to Albrecht Durer who absolutely took a part in the realization of the armillary sphere. After just three years, in 1525, a new edition of the Geographia was issued, the forth and the last in Strasbourg. Nonetheless, notwithstanding the editorial effort, Pirckheimer was not satisfied with the result and encouraged Gruninger to burn the blocks. Once both Fries and Gruninger had died, the blocks were … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ni … [Click Below for Full Description]

ARISTOTLE [COMMENTARY BY JACQUES LEFEVRE D'ETAPLES (c. 1455- 1536)]. Decem libri ethicorum Aristotelis ad Nicomachum, ex traductione Ioannis Argyropili Byzantii : communi familiariq; Iacobi Fabri Stapulensis commentario elucidati, & singulorum capitum argumentis praenotati. Adiectus Leonardi Aretini de moribus Dialogus.. Paris: Vaenales habentur in officina Simonis Colinaei chalcographi, e regione scholae Decretorum, 1522. A gem of a book, published by Simon de Colines in 1522 and bound, most likely, in Milan between 1522-1525, while the French were occupying the city. The binding has characteristics shared by the Morgan Library copy 19117, and was perhaps bound by the same binder or his heirs. Note, for example, the arabesque lozenge which is blind stamped twice horizontally on the Morgan copy and compare with the lozenge gilt tooled twice vertically on this copy - the design is almost exactly the same, although the Morgan copy's stamp is slightly larger. Also, the double blind tooling of the fillets, and the quality of the leather seems to suggest an identical binder, or at least a close association with the Morgan's Jean Grolier copy. The only other arabesque lozenge design that I have found that is similar to the one in the copy offered here is 'Ad invictissimum' by Fausto Andrelini (1507) (Paris, BN, lat. 8393) of the Fontainebleau Library, which has the same lozenge design stamped vertically five times in a line, but these lozenges are of a slightly different ratio in terms of wide and height, and the binder may have either imported the tools from the Milanese w … [Click Below for Full Description]

Desiderius Erasmus
Basel: I. Frobenius, 1522. THERE IS A STORY BEHIND EVERY BLEMISH! Bible leaf collectors know that some leaves are hard to look at and others look as new as the day they left the printing press. The condition of a particular leaf reflects its history and is not an indication of its actual value. Perfect leaves are ones that have seen little or no use over the centuries in contrast to those that are scarred by the ravages of time. Unblemished leaves are unloved leaves because they have had little contact with sinners. Imperfect leaves tell a story. Some are torn and ripped and worn away by excessive use while others have burns or worm holes and still others are water stained by flood and sometimes even tears. Each ugly mark or stain is in fact a beautiful witness to the Word of God, which, "liveth and abideth forever." We offer Bible leaves as we acquire them letting their condition speak for themselves. All our leaves are sold as seen on eBay. You may request additional images and information for any leaf. Choice Leaves, Finer than Gold, from the Word of God Taste and see! It's sweeter than honey!! Psalm 19 The BIBLICAL ARCHIVES Presents 1522 Erasmus' Greek New Testament This BIBLICAL ARCHIVES offer is for YOUR CHOICE from the list below of ONE original leaf from the third published Erasmus' Greek New Testament, 1522. PERSIUS FLACCUS (Aulus).
(A la fin:) Lyon, Ioannis Remy, 1522, XXIII Octobre. in-4. 4ff. 100ff. chiffrés. Rousseurs, quelques taches marginales. Pas dans Adams.
Benivieni, Girolamo
Nicolò Zoppino and Vincenzo comrades, Venezia, 1522. 8vo. 208pp. Some light, minor foxing to some pages, but otherwise in very good conditions. Bound full vellum. Speckled edges. "Very rare second edition" (the first is by Giunta, 1519). of this collection of poetic compositions important for the evolution of Italian poetry of the sixteenth century. Benivieni belonged to a family of supporters of Savonarola and Marsilio Ficino. It was in particular very close to Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, of which some compositions are inserted at the end of this edition. Gamba, 1068 (in note):" The publisher Biagio Bonaccorsi writes, that in the previous prints there were some of these imperfecti compositions et filled with many errors. Twice they were reprinted in Venice, Zoppino, 1522 and de 'Gregorii, 1524. They are Eglogues, Songs, Sonnets, Spiritual Laudi, Frottole and translations of the Bucolic of Mosco, of an elegy of Propertius, of some Psalms of David, of the " Dies irae", "Girolamo Benivieni, Florentine poet (1453-1542). Ficino's follower, he composed a latinizing allegorical poem entitled "Amore" and he exposed the theory of the divine love of the master in a song which Pico della Mirandola posted a large commentary on. Becoming a fervent follower of Savonarola, he repudiated the past, turned his Platonic-Petrarchian love poems to religious significance, and wrote laudi and songs of religious and ascetic inspiration (Treccani). As stated by Dionisotti, this edition is based on the previous Florentine but in the dedicatory it is emphasized that the work, badly printed in Flo … [Click Below for Full Description]
