[ARISTOTLE]
Augsburg: Grimm & Wirsung, 1520. Printed throughout in Roman letter of various sizes and mostly in double columns. First title page in red and black; heraldic woodcuts on second and third titles, devices, initials and text diagrams throughout. Final leaf, with large woodcut of Saint Catherine on colophon, is in facsimile on contemporary paper. Old vellum, new endpapers; occasional stains and a few wormholes. This edition of Aristotle's scientific and philosophical writings was brought together by Johann Eck (1486-1543) and here first printed in Augsburg by Grimm and Wirsung. This is also the first time the beautiful heraldic woodcuts were used. Research suggests that the artist could be Hans Burgkmair who worked in Augsburg at the time the book was printed. Another source indicates the woodcuts could be by the "Petrarca-Master" or that Books 2 and 3 were done by Hans Weiditz.

WALDSEEMULLER, Martin
Strasbourg: Martin Waldseemuller, 1520. Woodcut map with hand coloring. Sheet size 18" x 24.5" This iconic 1520 map by Martin Waldseemuller depicts the British Isles on a typical Ptolemaic projection with a trapezoid frame. The map famously shows Ptolemy's depiction of the British Isles (considered the 'edge of the world' in Ptolemy's time), with an elongated Scotland on an east-west orientation. The southwestern portion of England (Conrwall) also appears elongated. Ireland, located too far north, also shows an elongated south-west. The map, first published by Walseemuller in his 1513 edition of "Geographie Opus Novissima", was one of the most desireable of Ptolemy's maps, and is one of the few maps in the atlas that used letterpress in the margins and placenames. The atlas was the first to show Ptolemy's maps with relatively modern maps. This particular map from the 1520 edition of the atlas, with a missing title, is considered to be rarer than the first edition. The map is in good condition with minor wear along the original centerfold. Typical age toning and closed verso repairs near bottom margins. The title appears in manuscript. Claudius Ptolemy (90-168 CE) was a Roman geographer and mathematician living in Egypt, who compiled his knowledge and theories about the world's geography into one seminal work. Although his maps did not survive, his mathematical projections and location coordinates did. During the Renaissance revival of Greek and Roman works, "Geographia" was rediscovered by monks and based upon Ptolemy's detailed instructions, t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lucas Van LEYDEN
Acquaforte, 1520, monogrammata e datata in lastra in basso a sinistra "L 1520". Sconosciuto a Hollstein. Unica variante secondo Filedt Kok. Magnifico esemplare. Etching, 1520, dated and signed on plate at bottom left "L 1520". Great example, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed close to the platemark, in perfect condition. One of the earliest and rare etchings executed by Lucas van Leyden The very rare first state of the plate, unknown to Hollestein, and catalogued for the first time by Harry Salamon in 1972. The first state is without the the rust spots that have affected the plate. The subject (II Samuel 24) refers to David's penitence for having taken a census of Israel and Judah. God offered him the choice of three punishments: three years of famine, thre … [Click Below for Full Description]

Marcantonio RAIMONDI
Bulino, circa 1520. Molto rara. Engraving, circa 1520. Series The Twelve Caesars. Example in the first state of two, or three, on the address of publisher Salamanca and numbering. Magnificent proof, rich tone, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, trimmed on copperplate, in perfect condition. The series The Twelve Caesars is the first example of reproduction of ancient coins, enlarged significantly, a practice which became routine and was adopted by Daniel Hopfer in Augsburg. According to Vasari, the portraits of the emperors were among the works that Raphael sent to Dürer, who later praised the art of Marcantonio. This series documents the artist's deep interest in the fi … [Click Below for Full Description]

ANDROUET DU CERCEAU, Jacques.
BAL 95; Berlin Kat. 4699; Fowler 26; Vagnetti EIIb29. First edition of a beautifully illustrated manual on perspective for use of painters, sculptors and architects by Jacques Androuet Du Cerveau (ca. 1520-1584), one of the most fertile architects of the second half of the 16th century. He started the Pont-Neuf at Paris by order of Henri III, but the civil war prevented its completion. By order of Henri IV he worked at the gallery of the Louvre, but being a Protestant, Androuet had to flee Paris. The present work teaches the art of perspective in 60 lessons, offering gradually increasingly difficult problems as aids to the artist in constructing perspective views. The lessons are clearly illustrated with one plate for each lesson. The plates have great charm, thanks to both the arrangement of the illustrations and by the clear and strong designs. Most were etched by Androuet du Cerceau himself, and show perspective views and projections first of geometric figures and solids, then of increasingly elaborate buildings, architectural details and landscapes. With small tears repaired in three plates, only 1 affecting the pictorial image, and a small rust hole in another, but still in good condition. Kept in half morocco velvet-lined box. Recased, with the parchment somewhat stained.

Radini Tedeschi, Tommaso
Leipzig, Melchior Lotter d. [Click Below for Full Description]

"Bulino, 1520, datato in alto a sinistra e monogrammato ""L"" in basso a destra. "Engraving, 1520, lettered with the letter ""L"" at bottom right and the date 1520 at the top left. Only state or the first issue described by Filedt Kok. Superb example, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed close to the platemark, in excellent condition. The engraving shows a Nobleman and a Lady Seated in a Landscape; the lady sits on the ground at left and reaches out her right hand to receive a vase that the gentleman, seated on a rock at right foreground, reaches toward her with his right hand; he is seen almost from behind; the landscape extends behind them with a castle in right background. A great example." S. Salamon, Lucas van Leyden, n. 90; Bartsch (intaglio) 148; Hollstein (Dutch and Flemish) 148 (only state); Filedt Kok (New Hollstein) 148 (a).

Lucas Van LEYDEN (Leida 1494 - 1533)
1520. God offered him the choice of three punishments: three years of famine … [Click Below for Full Description]

Marcantonio RAIMONDI (Sant'Andrea in Argine 1480 circa - Bologna 1534)
Engraving, 1520-22 circa, signed with an empty tablet at lower left. After Giulio Romano. A good impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the platemark, very good condition. Praised by most authors as one of Marcantonio Raimondi's finest engravings, produced in the period immediately following the … [Click Below for Full Description]
