Albertus Magnus.
1514. 4to. (104) pp. With woodcut title border and full-page woodcut arms of Emperor Maximilian I on verso of final leaf. Papered spine. Very rare first edition of Albert's general description of the earth, marking the inauguration of scientific geography as an independent discipline and the first attempt at a comparative geography. Edited by the Bavarian mathematician, astronomer and astrologer Georg Tannstetter, who was mainly active in Vienna. "Interesting to the American collector on account of a marginal note relating to Vespuccius, which seems to have been inserted with movable type, on the recto of the last leaf in signature d, after the book had been printed" (Sabin). The contemporary owner, too, has highlighted the name by a marginal ms. note, "Vespucius". Also treats the Middle East with the "sinus Persicus" and "sinus Arabicus" (f. J4r). At the end, Tannstetter provides a brief list of unprinted works by Albertus, to which the contemporary owner has added "De vegetabilis et plantis". - Binding somewhat loosened near beginning; upper edge of title page remargined. Several contemporary marginalia. Occcasional light fingerstaining, but altogether clean and well-preserved. VD 16, A 1345. IA 102.526. Alden/L. 514/1. Sabin 671. JCB I, 58. Harrisse 76.

[MANUSCRIPT - MEDICAL].
A 16th-century manuscript collection of works on folk medicine, the title calling it The true swallow's nest (noting that, like a swallow's nest, it is assembled from various pieces) and indicating that the recipes and advice are taken not only from the most expert authors but also from people at home, ship's captains, sailors, soldiers, old wives and common manual labourers, and that the anonymous author has tried out most of them himself. It therefore provides a rare detailed view of medical practice, pharmacology, health and hygiene among the common people in the 16th-century Netherlands, at the dawn of the Dutch golden age. The title-page also notes a treatise on urine that it attributes to the Catalan physician Arnaldus de Villa Nova (ca. 1240-1311), which in fact precedes the main text. This Dutch translation had already appeared in Den groten herbarius (1514), and many later editions, but it is here followed by a few additions. The main text appears not to have been published, though some parts may have been influenced by Johann Schöner's Medicinael boeck (1551). The manuscript contains medical recipes and instructions for curing or ameliorating a wide variety of ailments. The anonymous compiler of the book occasionally names his sources, but we know little or nothing about most of them. With bookplate and numerous contemporary and near contemporary additions in several hands. A few leaves have clearly been removed, but all texts before them end with a full paragraph and all after them begin with a heading. On the recto of leaf 34, in the section on worms, about half … [Click Below for Full Description]

REUCHLIN, Johann.
62 unnumbered leaves (the final leaf, a blank, is present). Small folio, cont. blind-stamped pigskin-backed wooden boards, orig. clasps & catches. Tübingen: T. Anshelm, 1514. [bound with]:--. De Arte Cabalistica Libri Tres Leoni X. dicati. Large woodcut coat-of-arms of Reuchlin on title. Much printing in Hebrew. 4 p.l., LXXIX leaves, one leaf. Small folio. Hagenau: T. Anshelm, 1517. Fine and fresh copies of the second and first editions respectively of the Christian humanist Reuchlin's great expositions of the Cabbalistic art, present here together in a handsome binding of contemporary blind-stamped pigskin-backed wooden boards with the original catches and clasps. Reuchlin (1455-1522), was the first German humanist to rank as a great Hebrew scholar. His studies of the Hebrew language and of the Cabbala have earned him considerable historical significance. Reuchlin used his extensive travels to establish contact with Jewish scholars and humanists, and to acquire manuscripts and printed works for his library, which was one of the largest private book collections of his time. In 1494, Reuchlin published his first cabbalistic text, the De Verbo Mirifico which greatly enhanced his scholarly reputation. Written in the form of a dialogue, there are three participants, the Greek philosopher Sidonius, the Jew Baruchias, and Reuchlin himself, appearing under the pseudonym Capnio. These three meet accidentally at Pforzheim where they discuss the occult meaning of the Hebrew pentagrammaton "YHSVH," the letters of the Hebrew form of the name Jesus. The De Arte Cabalistica is Reuchlin' … [Click Below for Full Description]

SAVONAROLA Girolamo (SAVONAROLA Hieronymus)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Albrecht DURER (Norimberga 1471 - 1528)
1514. "Bulino, 1514, monogrammato e datato in lastra in basso a destra. [Click Below for Full Description]

II, n. LIUTPRAND von Cremona ( - Liudprand - Liutprandus Cremonensis - Ticinensis ) -
Paris, Badius Ascensius & Jean Petit 1514. Folio. (4), 42 Bll., zahlreiche Holzschnitt - Initialen (davon 8 große: eine 14-zeilig, sieben 10-zeilig), Titelbordüre (Nr. 1 / s. Renouard Asc. [Click Below for Full Description]

Schedel Hartmann, 1440-1514. Woodcut, edited anno 1493 in Harmann Schedel, Nuremberg Chroncikle, latin edition, size: 45 x 65 and 20 x 52 cm., good condition, little waterstained, some small restored holes in the centerfold. PEURBACH, Georg and Johannes REGIOMONTANUS [Johann MÜLLER]
[colophon: Vienna, Winterburger for Leonard and Lucas Alantsee, 1514]. Folio (313 x 215 mm), ff [67] XIX, pp 90 [2], with two astronomical woodcuts on title, 3 woodcuts in text, ornamental woodcut initials and woodcut Imperial coat-of-arms on colophon leaf; title with some marginal dustsoiling, some very faint marginal waterstains on upper outer corner in the second half of the text, a small wormhole in a couple of gatherings touching a few letters, otherwise an exceptionally fresh, crisp, and large copy, with some sheets preserving their deckle, in its original binding of a rubricated missal leaf, with antiphonal chants and notations, binding very worn.First editions of Peurbach's eclipse tables and tables of the first sphere by his student Regiomontanus, both edited with commentary by Georg Tannstetter. This work also includes one of the earliest histories of European astronomy.'Recognized throughout the sixteenth century as a monument of industry, the Tabulae eclipsium, completed probably in 1459, is Peurbach's most impressive work and was still used (although critically) by Tycho near the end of the sixteenth century . The tables are based entirely on the Alphonsine Tables, in that the underlying parameters are exclusively Alphonsine; but Peurbach expanded and rearranged the tables needed for every step in eclipse computation, saving the calculator much time and relieving him of a number of tedious procedures. The tables in the printed version run to fully 100 pages . Most remarkable, and evidently most laborious to compute, are the forty-eight-page double-entry tables … [Click Below for Full Description]
