Saint Bonaventure; Traut, Wolf.
First German edition and a remarkable contemporary coloured copy of the Legenda major beati Francisci, a masterpiece of German illustration, written by the Minister General of the Order of Friars Minor and Doctor of the Church, Saint Bonaventure (1221 - 1274), in 1260 and declared the only authentic biography of Saint Francis by the General Chapter in Paris in 1266. Saint Bonaventure ranks high as a Doctor of the Church, and one of the foremost philosophers and scholastic theologians of the middle ages. Die Legende des heyligen vatters Francisci was printed by Holtzel on behalf and at the expense of the Tyrolean benefactor of the Franciscan church in Schwaz, Caspar Rosenthaler. Holtzel was active as a printer in Nuremberg since 1499. In 1511 he printed Durer´s Life of Mary and employed as illustrators for his printings Durer´s foremost collaborators, such as Hans Baldung Grien, Hans von Kulmbach and Wolf Traut who was commissioned with the illustration of the present book. It ranks among Traut´s graphic masterpieces; some are dated, however non are signed. A rare book to find complete (last copy recorded Sotheby´s 1993, 5,175 GBP, to Quaritch), not to mention a copy with this spectacular colouring, heightened profusely with gold. The East Slavs emerged as a recognizable group in Europe between the 3rd and 8th centuries AD. Founded and ruled by a Varangianwarrior elite and their descendants, the medieval state of Rus arose in the 9th century. In 988 it adopted Orthodox Christianity from the Byzantine Empire, beginning the synthesis of Byzantine and Slavic cultures that defined Russian culture for the next millennium. Rus ultimately disintegrated into a number of smaller states; most of the Rus' lands were overrun by the Mongol invasion and became tributaries of the nomadic Golden Horde in the 13th century. The Grand Duchy of Moscow gradually reunified the surrounding Russian principalities and achieved independence from the Golden Horde. By the 18th century, the nation had greatly expanded through conquest, annexation, and exploration to become the Russian Empire, which was the third largest empire in history, stretching from Poland on the west to Alaska on the east.In classical antiquity, the Pontic Steppe was known as Scythia. Beginning in the 8th century BC, Ancient Greek traders brought their civilization to the trade emporiums in Tanais and Phanagoria. Ancient Greek explorers, most notably Pytheas, even went as far as modern day Kaliningrad, on the Baltic Sea. Romans settled on the western part of the Caspian Sea, where their empire stretched towards the east. The establishment … [Click Below for Full Description]

PLAUTUS, Titus Maccius.
- Adams P-1512; USTC 451501; for Schutken see: De Bruin, De statenbijbel en zijn voorgangers, pp. 30-32. Plautus's twenty comedies, including the important commentaries by the French scholar Denis Lambin (1520-1572). The present volume is especially interesting because of the four manuscript fragments that have been used to reinforce the spine. They come from a Dutch translation of the New Testament by Johan Schutken (d. 1423) of the Windesheim monastery, dated ca. 1390. The fragments contain passages from the 20th chapter of the Gospel of Luke (a transcript is available on request). Schutken's translation was the most widely read Bible in Dutch in the Middle Ages, but surviving copies are rare. With manuscript library inscription on title-page. Faint and very minor marginal waterstaining, wormhole in first part of the book, only slightly affecting the text and a tiny stain on pp. 230 and 429, otherwise in very good condition. Binding partially detached from bookblock, allowing study of the manuscript fragments. Overall in good condition.
