Giovanni Ludovico Vivaldi
Étienne Gueynard, Lyon, 1512. Text in Latin. Edited by Andreas de Soncino. RARE and SUPERBLY ILLUSTRATED 4th edition of this celebrated post-incunable, embellished with eight fine large (from 2/3-page to full-page) woodcuts attributed to Guillaume Le Roy, as well as numerous woodcut borders and numerous large historiated initials. In its general layout and pictorial presentation style the book bears a strong resemblance to French Books of Hours of that period. "The full-page woodcuts are striking and, according to Brun, [.] by G. Leroy, one of the finest of the Lyonnese book illustrators." (Lathrop C. Harper) USTC locates only 16 copies of this edition worldwide. The first work in this volume is a consolatory letter to the Marchioness MarguŽrite de Foix upon the death of Louis her husband, Ludovico. This is followed by De pugna partis sensitive et intellective (ÒOn the combat of the sensitive and intellectual faculty [of man]Ó), intended as a funeral sermon upon Ludovico IIÕs death in 1504. In this tract the author treats of grief for the dead and to what extent it is natural and right, and he warns that excessive grief devolves into complaints and bitterness against God and thus becomes blasphemy. The other treatises comprising the Opus regale include a long work De duodecim persecutionibus ecclesie dei (ÒOn the twelve persecutions of the [Christian] ChurchÓ), which lists among the afflictions of the Church the early Roman emperors, the heretics, the Turks, the corrupt priests and prelates, etc., and contains, inter alia, some interesting discussions of Mohammad and Islam. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Apuleius, Lucius; Plato; Ficino, Marsilio; Trismegistus Hermes; Marianus Tuccius; The or Golden Ass and Other Works - 1512.
[Philip Giunta, Florence], 1512. ff. [2], 253, [1] leaves. Some light foxing. Small 8vo. 165 mm. No front fly leaf. Simple 19th century full vellum binding. Text in Latin italic throughout, with a few Greek words in the text. The last leaf has the colophon, with the printer's mark of a fleur de lis supported by two children holding floral cornucopias - used here for the first time. Apuleius (ca. 125-180 AD) was a Latin prose writer. Born a Numidian Berber, from Madaurus (now M'Daourouch, Algeria), he studied philosophy in Athens; traveled to Italy, Asia Minor and Egypt; and was an initiate in several mystic cults. His most famous work is this bawdy picaresque novel, the Metamorphoses, otherwise known as The Golden Ass, the only Latin novel that has survived in its entirety. It relates the ludicrous adventures of Lucius, who experiments with magic and is accidentally turned into a donkey. Here also are philosophical treatises dealing with Plato and his Renaissance follower and promoter, Marsilius Ficino. Calenzio, Eliseo.
[colophon: Argentorat{um}]: in aedibus Schurerianis, MDXII {1512}]. 4to (19.5 cm, 7.5"). [18] ff. Calenzio (1430–1503) was a 15th-century Italian Neo-Latinist, humanist, poet, tutor of Frederick of Naples, and friend of Jacopo Sannazaro. His writings include fables, satires, and epigrams. De Bello Ranarum is an imitation of Batrachomyomachia (i.e., "The Battle of the Frogs and Mice") previously attributed to Homer. A comic fable in verse intended for a young audience, it was first published apart from his opuscula by Schurer in the year before the current example and we find no editions prior to that, although the work seems to have been written in Calenzio's young adulthood (ca. 1452). The title-page contains an early example of bookseller salesmanship: Below the title is printed "Lector eme, lege, et probabis — "Reader, buy [it], read [it], and you'll approve [of it]." As is to be expected of Renaissance children's books, this is scarce: NUC and WorldCat locate only two copies of this edition in U.S. libraries (Columbia, Folger) and none of the 1511. Provenance: From the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ("AHA") at rear. Adams H806; Schmidt, Schurer, 91; VD16 C221; Index aurel. 129.351; Benzing, Strasbourg, 313; Graesse, II, 15. Recent full dark tan calf, plain antique style; front cover showing pressure marks of writing done on paper resting on the volume. Title-page a little dusty; very faint soiling or staining on a few leaves. Nice margins.

The title-page contains an early example of bookseller salesmanship: Below the title is printed "Lector eme, lege, et probabis -- "Reader, buy [it], read [it], and you'll approve [of it]." As is to be expected of Renaissance children's books, this is scarce: NUC and WorldCat locate only two copies of this edition in U.S. libraries (Columbia, Folger) and none of the 1511. Provenance: From the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ("AHA") at rear.

CODEX IUSTINIANUS -
Andree Boucard impressus; Impensis Johannis Petit,Thilman Kerver,, Paris. Paris, Andree Boucard impressus; Impensis Johannis Petit,Thilman Kerver, 1512,15. November, Quart. Titelblatt mit prächtigem Druckersignet in Rot-Schwarz-Druck, (3), 580, (26) gezählte Blätter. Halbleinen. [Click Below for Full Description]

Marcantonio Raimondi, also simply Marcantonio (c. 1480 – c. 1534), was a reknown Italian engraver, known for being the first important printmaker whose body of work consists mainly of prints after paintings. His engravings helped much to popularize of paintings themselves like those by Raphael. His engravings however were not intended as strict copies but were foremost an interpretation with independent character. He systematized a technique of engraving that became dominant in Italy and elsewhere. Condition: Very good, given age. No margins. Remains of attachment to carrier to the rear of the sheet. P., Josse Bade et Jean Petit [Johane Parvo], 1512, petit in-folio. 6ff.-CXXXIV f° (mal chiffré CXXXII). Signatures : Aa6, a-z6, &6, ?4, A-F6.
Jhs. hinein wiederholt abgedruckt. - Teilweise mit schmalem Wasserrand, di … [Click Below for Full Description]
