Bible medieval casket; book case].
Late 15th or early 16th century beautiful Book Casket in wrought iron. Circa 1500. (5 x 10 ¼ x 7 inches; or 128 x 260 x 180 mm). Wrought-iron casket; with old but presumably later red velvet interior. Probably French, although production was also heavy in parts of Spain. General minor dents, cracks, scratches and wear consistent with age and handling; a few pins lacking and a very minor lifting to two sections on one side. 20,000 $ A beautiful example of a book box, often referred to as Bible-caskets or Missal-caskets for the type of books it usually carried; these boxes, or better yet strong boxes were designed specifically to protect books, clearly a valued possession as were -one would assume- illuminated Books of Hours or Bibles or devotional books, clearly considered valuable enough to justify the cost of the box, and if not, significant enough, to merit their inclusion in the box. A devotional book, from a devout religious person point of view, is a sacred object, profanation of which was a sin -and crime-, argument that would on its own merit the outmost protection and justify the use of a protective box; from a different perspective, illuminated Bibles or Books Hours could be potentially very expensive, often produced as Kingly gifts, employing the best artists and miniaturists, an argument that again would merit the inclusion of the book in a box. This example, which comes to us in very good condition, is a reminiscence of the care for books, fear of damage, or even devotion to the sacred content, in the late 15th century, and early 16th century. this is not the ordinary foxes book of Martyrs. It's not the first edition from the 1500s written by John Fox, nor is it like any of the other Editions that Ive found online. Mine has five raised edges on the spine, gold page ends all the way around and the huguenots gold seal on the front board. I've searched for over a month online trying to find another foxes book of Martyrs like mine. I just can't find one. I have Museum interest in Washington New Jersey due to the famous signature on the Flyleaf page of this volume. See photos. If you can't read that it says Daniel F Beatty. He is the inventor of the Beethoven Reed organ and he is responsible for Washington New Jersey being referred to as the Organ capital of the world even to this day. this volume came from mr. Beatty's personal Library when he was still alive. The date next to his inscription 1899 proves that this book is older than that... And the signature is authentic. I'm listing this in my store to see if anyone has interest or knows any more about this Vol. Again I cannot find this book anywhere. Yes... There are hundreds of foxes book of Martyrs all over the internet. Not with gold page ends, not with five raised edges on the spine and definitely not with the gold Huguenot seal on the front board. And the boards of this book?... Are made of real wood. The Edition is tight, it's rare, it's signed by an extremely famous man.. good price, free shipping... once again, even if you are not interested in purchasing this volume from me... If you know anything about this particular volume please email me. I'm very good … [Click Below for Full Description]

Original price: $2400.00 NOW: $1500.00 A Treatise on Magic, or, On the Intercourse Between Spirits and Men; With Annotations (Presentation Copy) Albany: Balance Press, 1810. First Edition. 12 mo. Contemporary quarter leather over marbled boards, professionally re-backed, gilt ruled spine. Housed in a period clamshell box (quarter leather over marbled boards) with decorative gilt spine. Inscribed to former owner: "A present of the author" on front blank recto. vi + 76 pp. An extremely rare volume. Light rubbing to boards. Internally crisp and clean with the exception of a few pencil marks to margins and a former owner's name at top of title page. A very good copy in a near fine clamshell box. Frederick Henry Quitman (1760-1832) knows quite a bit about the history and practice of magic throughout the ages, from the ancient Chaldeans, Egyptians, and Persians, through the Greek and Roman periods, and further onward into the areas of witchcraft and sorcery as practiced in the middle ages and beyond. Of course, being a fine man of Lutheran upbringing, he does his best to discredit every ounce of it - and he fails miserably. Quitman seems to take great pleasure in blaming the belief in magic on the limits of the savage mind among the barbarous nations (the nations that gave us practically everything) and the cumulative gullibility of the ignorant masses. He also stresses that many who may have been a witness to certain results of so-called magical practices were probably exposed to nocturnal vapors from some burned narcotic plant, as if that was a bad thing! He gives many examples … [Click Below for Full Description]
