FRENCH ARTIST
1500. Single leaf, 164x102mm, with a full-page miniature presumably on the verso facing a prayer to St Francis on a recto in a Book of Hours, the reverse blank, some pigment loss especially near the lower right corner, the edges of the leaf discoloured through previous contact with card mount. Another leaf with a miniature of Sts Francis and St. Clare is so similar in terms of size, composition and style, that it probably belonged to the same manuscript (Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1958-151-4). It may, therefore, have been a Book of Hours, or another devotional manuscript, with a strong Franciscan element as we have the miniature of St. Francis alone and then one of both St. Francis and St. Clare, one of his first followers, in a sister leaf. In 1224 Francis of Assisi was on retreat on Mount Alverna with his companion Thomas of Celano: Thomas reported that Francis saw a vision of a seraph with his arms outspread and feet together, in the shape of a cross, and while contemplating it marks appeared like those of Christ at his Crucifixion, on his hands, feet, and side, where they remained until his death two years later. The building in the background of the miniature is perhaps intended to represent the chapel of the Portiuncula, where the Franciscan order was founded, or Francis?s church at Assisi itself. Philadelphia Museum of Art, St. Francis and St. Catherine [sic]. The Samuel S. White 3rd and Vera White Collection, 1958-151-4

Martin ZASINGER (Maestro MZ)
Engraving, 1500 circa, signed, at lower centre, with the monogram "MZ". Good example, printed on contemporary laid paper, occasional light stain, otherwise in good condition. The "St. Ursula," "St. Margaret", and "St. Catherine" series are similar in size and format and represent three virginal noble- women martyred their faith. St. Ursula thought to have been slain by pagan archers at Cologne, for which reason her attribute is an arrow Mojzer (1975, pp. 399-400) has suggested a date of 1500 for all three female saints, and has noted the influence of Schongauer' … [Click Below for Full Description]

Monogrammista IICA
[Click Below for Full Description]

FLEMISH ARTIST
1500. Size: 148mm. by 96mm. Full-page miniature with a kneeling nun in Dominican habit, her hands pressed together in prayer and her eyes focussed on a point on the facing page (presumably the beginning of the text), in a rural scene with delicate flowers and tufts of grass, and a series of late medieval walls, buildings, a stream and a wooded hill in the background, a coat-of-arms hanging by a red leather strap with gold buckle on the tree to the left: coupé gules and or, a bird argent in the upper compartment, all within a striking border of deep blue with liquid gold hairstrokes picking out a column and an arch (some minor flaking of paint with only significant losses to the hem of her habit). This was most probably the frontispiece to an illuminated prayerbook made for the nun seen kneeling in prayer. The arms have been identified as those of the Saint-Genois family, and the nun may have been a member of the Dominican convent at Forest, near Brussels, whose abbess, Margaretha de Gavere de Leiderkercke (held office from 1500), commissioned a number of richly illuminated volumes (Smeyers and Van den Stock, Flemish Illuminated Manuscripts, 1996, no.23). The artist of this miniature is firmly rooted in Flemish illumination of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth century, drawing the eye through the sweeping detailed landscape in three distinct stages, and sharpening our attention through the narrowed eyes of the subject on the opening of the text itself. Martin ZASINGER (Maestro MZ)
Engraving, circa 1500, signed at lower center with the monogram "MZ". A good impression on contemporary paper, with margins, generally in good condition. In the absence of appreciable stylistic or technical development, Zasinger’s production can be concentred around 1500. The prints are equally divided between religious and secular objects; most of his works have landscape backgrounds executed with a delicate touch that suggests a precursor of Albrecht Altdorfer and other painters of the Danube school. Works like The Ball and The Tournament (1500; Lehrs 17-18), companion pieces that represent a … [Click Below for Full Description]

DIANA SCULTORI

this is not the ordinary foxes book of Martyrs. It's not the first edition from the 1500s written by John Fox, nor is it like any of the other Editions that Ive found online. Mine has five raised edges on the spine, gold page ends all the way around and the huguenots gold seal on the front board. I've searched for over a month online trying to find another foxes book of Martyrs like mine. I just can't find one. I have Museum interest in Washington New Jersey due to the famous signature on the Flyleaf page of this volume. See photos. If you can't read that it says Daniel F Beatty. He is the inventor of the Beethoven Reed organ and he is responsible for Washington New Jersey being referred to as the Organ capital of the world even to this day. this volume came from mr. Beatty's personal Library when he was still alive. The date next to his inscription 1899 proves that this book is older than that... And the signature is authentic. I'm listing this in my store to see if anyone has interest or knows any more about this Vol. Again I cannot find this book anywhere. Yes... There are hundreds of foxes book of Martyrs all over the internet. Not with gold page ends, not with five raised edges on the spine and definitely not with the gold Huguenot seal on the front board. And the boards of this book?... Are made of real wood. The Edition is tight, it's rare, it's signed by an extremely famous man.. good price, free shipping... once again, even if you are not interested in purchasing this volume from me... If you know anything about this particular volume please email me. I'm very good … [Click Below for Full Description]

A VERY FINE ILLUMINATED VELLUM MANUSCRIPT LEAF FROM A BOOK OF HOURS IN LATIN, WITH A MINIATURE OF THE PRESENTATION IN THE TEMPLE
Paris: , ca. 1500. Paris, ca. 1500. 165 x 113 mm. (6 1/2 x 4 1/2"). Recto with 16 lines of text in a fine gothic script. Matted. Rubrics in blue, line fillers, one one-line initial and two two-line initials in gold on pink and blue ground, one three-line initial in blue with pink and blue trefoils on a burnished gold ground, and WITH A HALF-PAGE MINIATURE IN THE STYLE OF JEAN PICHORE framed by a golden arch and columns, SURROUNDED BY A FULL BORDER featuring a hybrid creature, fruit, acanthus leaves, and brushed gold diamonds; the text side with a similarly styled border on fore-edge only.Text ink slightly faded on hair side, one or two negligible marginal blemishes, otherwise IN PRISTINE CONDITION.This very skillfully painted and wonderfully well-preserved miniature closely resembles the work of Jean Pichore, a major figure among illuminators of the period. The painting depicts the traditional scene associated with the hour of None, in which Mary and Joseph bring their Child to the temple, to be inducted into the Jewish faith. Both the Virgin and Joseph are present in this scene, as is Simeon the high priest, who cradles the Christ Child in a white sheet. Mary kneels before the altar while Joseph stands slightly back (he is, rather conspicuously, the only member of the scene without a nimbus). The careful rendering of features, the rosiness of the child's flesh, and the fully realized interior space are done with very considerable skill and point to, at the very least, a talented follower of Pichore or member or his workshop. The Pichore style was often imitated by his con … [Click Below for Full Description]

Beautifully engraved and hand-coloured celestial chart by the Nuremberg astronomer and professor of mathematics Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr (1677-1750). In the beginning of the 18th-century Doppelmayr worked closely with the cartographer Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724). Together, they produced a number of atlases including the famous Atlas coelestis (1742), a collection of diagrams with explanations intended as an introduction to the fundamentals of astronomy."This map of the northern hemisphere sky includes the Ptolemaic constellations and a number of the newly-designed ones. The eight northern hemisphere constellations, introduced by Johannes Hevelius in the previous century, are depicted. Mons Maenalus (at lower left), strictly speaking is not a constellation in its own right but part of Boötes. Boötes is seen standing on the mountain of Arcadia in the central Peloponnese" (Stott).A very good copy.

A fine full sized facsimile on specially made "antique" paper from the Ventura Mill at Cernobbio, Italy, faithfully reproducing the black letter text of the editio princeps of the King James Bible. The edition was limited to 1500 copies, of which this is number 896. It was printed by offset lithography and bound in full leather by Amilcare Pizzi of Milan in a replica of the type of binding found on some copies of this edition. This piece has coloration on the pages, looks as though its foxing. The cover has been dropped and has damage to the leather cover top. (070718).
