A VERY FINE ILLUMINATED VELLUM MANUSCRIPT LEAF FROM A BOOK OF HOURS IN LATIN, WITH A MINIATURE OF THE PRESENTATION IN THE TEMPLE
Paris: , ca. 1500. Paris, ca. 1500. This very skillfully painted and wonderfully well-preserved miniature closely resembles the work of Jean Pichore, a major figure among illuminators of the period. The painting depicts the traditional scene associated with the hour of None, in which Mary and Joseph bring their Child to the temple, to be inducted into the Jewish faith. Both the Virgin and Joseph are present in this scene, as is Simeon the high priest, who cradles the Christ Child in a white sheet. Mary kneels before the altar while Joseph stands slightly back (he is, rather conspicuously, the only member of the scene without a nimbus). The careful rendering of features, the rosiness of the child's flesh, and the fully realized interior space are done with very considerable skill and point to, at the very least, a talented follower of Pichore or member or his workshop. The Pichore style was often imitated by his contemporaries, but the quality of the painting here deserves special mention. Everything is clean and quiet, and magnification, rather than exposing inadequacy, emphasizes the deftness of the artist--this can be seen especially in the faces and in the shaded contours of the Christ Child's body.. 165 x 113 mm. (6 1/2 x 4 1/2"). Recto with 16 lines of text in a fine gothic script. Matted. Rubrics in blue, line fillers, one one-line initial and two two-line initials in gold on pink and blue ground, one three-line initial in blue with pink and blue trefoils on a burnished gold ground, and WITH A HALF-PAGE MINIATURE IN THE STYLE OF JEAN PICHORE framed by a golden arch … [Click Below for Full Description]

In the beginning of the 18th-century Doppelmayr worked closely with the cartographer Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724). Together, they produced a number of atlases including the famous Atlas coelestis (1742), a collection of diagrams with explanations intended as an introduction to the fundamentals of astronomy."This map of the northern hemisphere sky includes the Ptolemaic constellations and a number of the newly-designed ones. The eight northern hemisphere constellations, introduced by Johannes Hevelius in the previous century, are depicted. Mons Maenalus (at lower left), strictly speaking is not a constellation in its own right but part of Boötes. Boötes is seen standing on the mountain of Arcadia in the central Peloponnese" (Stott).A very good copy.

Niello, circa 1500. Niello, 1500 circa. Magnificent work, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, in excellent condition. The niello is a particular technique to work metals; is a kind of engraving with a decoration on a black background realized through a mix of copper, silver, lead and sulphur. The niello started in Florence, in the XV century, the history of Italian engravings, straight from the Florentine tradition of goldsmiths. Passavant described it in his Duchesne catalogue, in 1828. Excellent example of a rare work. Bibliografia: Passavant I, p. 287, 459; Dutuit II, p. 111, 30. Dimensioni 40x40.

BOYLE, Robert
1500. While mostly known for his contributions to natural philosophy and science, Robert Boyle was highly interested in theology, devoting much of his time to studying the existence of God, using his philosophical and even scientific discoveries as evidence. Works such as 'Of the High Veneration of Man's Intellect' were written directly to defend the Christian faith against atheism, pagans, and even Jews and Mahometans, (as he stated in his own will). In this work, Boyle does note that it often seems as if God is indifferent to what happens on earth considering the destruction that is so prevalent; however, he states that close-minded philosophers such as Epicurus, should view these events as God's power rather than his absence. BAPTISTA MANTUANUS, GIOVANNI
Argentinae [Strassburg]: Johann Schott, 1502, 1501, 1500. This sammelband combines two works by humanist poet and Carmelite reformer Baptista Mantuanus with a treatise on Roman law, in a binding by an Esslingen binder who flourished between 1480 and 1524. Baptista Spagnuoli of Mantua (1447-1516) was one of the most prolific poets of the Renaissance and someone whose verse became enormously popular and influential in the early modern period, particularly after his eclogues were translated into English. Shakespeare referenced some of his poetry in "Love's Labour's Lost," and both Milton and Spenser also found inspiration in his work. The first work here, on various calamities of classical and contemporary times, was quite popular in the 16th century; it includes an attack on papal corruption that Luther included in his "Against the Roman Papacy." The second work, containing verses in praise of the Virgin Mary and Saint Catherine of Alexandria, introduced a form of epic poetry on religious subjects that would influence writers from Sannazaro to Milton, and led Erasmus to dub the Mantuan a "Christian Virgil." The final work in our volume is an influential manual on Roman law dating from the 12th century known as the "Exceptiones Petri." The binding here is from an Esslingen workshop dubbed by Kyriss "Kinder spielend" ["Children playing"] for the stamp which appears on the lower cover. Kyriss examined 61 volumes from German libraries in Esslingen, Stuttgart, Tubingen, and other cities that may be traced to this atelier. More than 90 percent of the bindings are on white pigskin, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Originally sold for $2000 and is very rare and hard to find. This book is so much larger than it looks. Amazing full color artwork! What a beauty!! It is in very good condition, not flawless, but extremely good. Two spots on the front look a little rubbed/marred, and some creasing And wear to the upper part of the spine that I am afraid I may have caused by taking pictures for this listing. See pictures. What an amazing book!Shipping will be very expensive as this is a rather heavy book, and will require full insurance to boot. L=20" W=15.5" D=2" From the publisher: Walton's World The beautifully savage beasts and birds of Walton Ford Collector's Edition (No. 0000/1,500) Limited to 1,500 individually numbered copies, each signed by Walton Ford Printed on archival-quality paper Finished in book cloth with a leather spine and corners with gold embossing. At first glance, Walton Ford's large-scale, highly-detailed watercolors of animals may recall the prints of 19th century illustrators John James Audubon and Edward Lear, and others of the colonial era. But a closer look reveals a complex and disturbingly anthropomorphic universe, full of symbols, sly jokes, and allusions to the 'operatic' nature of traditional natural history themes. The beasts and birds populating this contemporary artist's life-size paintings are never mere objects, but dynamic actors in allegorical struggles: a wild turkey crushes a small parrot in its claw; a troup … [Click Below for Full Description]

Albrecht DURER
Bulino, 1500 circa, monogrammato in lastra in basso a destra. Capolavoro dell’arte ornamentale. Engraving, circa 1500, signed on plate at the bottom right. Example in the first variant of seven described by Meder. A magnificent impression, rich in tone, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark "high crown" (Meder 20 typical of this first issue), complete with the marginal line, small restoration at the corners perfectly executed, in excellent condition. Although Dürer made by King Christian of Denmark in 1521, and the memor … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Spiritual Lessons for a Religious Person by consideration of ye conditions of Wedlocke...A way for them to exercise them perpetually..." Original manuscript on paper consisting of 74 leaves in English, 71 of which are written recto and verso in one neat Italian hand in the style of late 1500s-early 1600s. 13 blank leaves beyond the last page of text. Dimensions in inches: 4 1/8 wide x 6 1/8 high x 1 1/8 thick. Unpaginated but collated complete based on the catchwords. Original polished "Dutch" vellum, 8vo., lacking only the vellum ties. Old c. 1920s book sales catalog entry pasted in at second blank leaf. Pencil inscription dated 1902 on inside of front board. Pen monastery ex libris on recto of first blank. Two four leaf clovers pressed between blank endpapers. Several small hand-drawn and cut paper flowers found between pages. English Catholic manuscripts from this period are extremely scarce, owing to the persecution of English Catholics that began in the 1500s. Catholicism was tolerated under James I (1603-25) and enjoyed a minor revival under Charles II (1660-85). However, the historical context for this book is much more complicated. See the Wikipedia article "Catholic Church in England and Wales" for a nice summary. 1500. 4 3/4" x 7" approximately. We consulted several experts in the US and Italy. The consensus is it's not 16th Century but most likely 17th Century. No one has seen this particular image. A durer expert thinkgs it's after Durer no monogram present, possibly from a Spanish print maker. Another expert considers it might be from Eastern Europe in the Byzantine tradition. Another suggests it was printed in Naples by a Greek print-maker. Here's how we found this particular print: We bought a collection of books and papers from the 16th to the 20th Century. We found this print and 2 documents on vellum dated in the 1500s laid in a mid-16th Century book. Doesn't date the print from that century as it certainly could just be coincidental. Slight tear else small ink stain, few very minor creases at tips. A lovely example of a breastfeeding Madonna print. * books carefully packed and shipped promptly . Very Good.

Bulino, 1500 circa, firmata in basso a destra 'Petri de Nobilibus Formis'. [Click Below for Full Description]

The Middle East: This is a book of approximately 60 vellum pages hand written in black and red ink with a few illustrated separators and an angelic figure at the rear. The writing is Ge'ez, an Afro-Semitic language used in the Ethiopian Tewadeho Coptic Church. It is most likely a Coptic Christian religious text . It was likely produced between 1000 - 1500 AD but could possibly be later. It is bound between wood boards which are tied on with cord. It is in reasonably good condition with a few pages showing some edge soiling or foxing. This is an early bound book. It measures 5 3/4" tall by 4" wide by 1 1/2" across the spine. My thanks to "digmeister" who is apparently a linguist and can read Coptic, for identifying the language used in this book.
