this is not the ordinary foxes book of Martyrs. It's not the first edition from the 1500s written by John Fox, nor is it like any of the other Editions that Ive found online. Mine has five raised edges on the spine, gold page ends all the way around and the huguenots gold seal on the front board. I've searched for over a month online trying to find another foxes book of Martyrs like mine. I just can't find one. I have Museum interest in Washington New Jersey due to the famous signature on the Flyleaf page of this volume. See photos. If you can't read that it says Daniel F Beatty. He is the inventor of the Beethoven Reed organ and he is responsible for Washington New Jersey being referred to as the Organ capital of the world even to this day. this volume came from mr. Beatty's personal Library when he was still alive. The date next to his inscription 1899 proves that this book is older than that... And the signature is authentic. I'm listing this in my store to see if anyone has interest or knows any more about this Vol. Again I cannot find this book anywhere. Yes... There are hundreds of foxes book of Martyrs all over the internet. Not with gold page ends, not with five raised edges on the spine and definitely not with the gold Huguenot seal on the front board. And the boards of this book?... Are made of real wood. The Edition is tight, it's rare, it's signed by an extremely famous man.. good price, free shipping... once again, even if you are not interested in purchasing this volume from me... If you know anything about this particular volume please email me. I'm very good … [Click Below for Full Description]

Original price: $2400.00 NOW: $1500.00 A Treatise on Magic, or, On the Intercourse Between Spirits and Men; With Annotations (Presentation Copy) Albany: Balance Press, 1810. First Edition. 12 mo. Contemporary quarter leather over marbled boards, professionally re-backed, gilt ruled spine. Housed in a period clamshell box (quarter leather over marbled boards) with decorative gilt spine. Inscribed to former owner: "A present of the author" on front blank recto. vi + 76 pp. An extremely rare volume. Light rubbing to boards. Internally crisp and clean with the exception of a few pencil marks to margins and a former owner's name at top of title page. A very good copy in a near fine clamshell box. Frederick Henry Quitman (1760-1832) knows quite a bit about the history and practice of magic throughout the ages, from the ancient Chaldeans, Egyptians, and Persians, through the Greek and Roman periods, and further onward into the areas of witchcraft and sorcery as practiced in the middle ages and beyond. Of course, being a fine man of Lutheran upbringing, he does his best to discredit every ounce of it - and he fails miserably. Quitman seems to take great pleasure in blaming the belief in magic on the limits of the savage mind among the barbarous nations (the nations that gave us practically everything) and the cumulative gullibility of the ignorant masses. He also stresses that many who may have been a witness to certain results of so-called magical practices were probably exposed to nocturnal vapors from some burned narcotic plant, as if that was a bad thing! He gives many examples … [Click Below for Full Description]

Les Vêpres siciliennes, to a libretto by Eugène Scribe and Charles Duveyrier after their libretto Le duc d'Albe, was first performed in Paris at the Opéra on June 13, 1855. "For those wishing to understand Verdi's musical development during the 1850s, Les vêpres siciliennes is of enormous importance. In both strictly formal terms and in larger matters of operatic structure, it marks a decisive turn away from the language of the middle-period Italian operas and the emergence of many stylistic features we associate with the later Verdi. ANTONIO MARIA DA VILLAFORA
1500. initial 'D', from an illuminated choirbook. Size of initial: 92 x 92mm. The initial opening Psalm 52, Dixit insipiens, likely in a Breviary or a Ferial Psalter, laid down but with a round pink label ?Ball Collection? with the written number 5 on the reverse. This is an excellent example of the work of Antonio Maria da Villafora (documented in Padua 1469-1511), showing his detailed technique and strong characterisation. Although originating in Villafora in Polesina, Antonio Maria?s documented career was entirely in Padua. He was active over a long period and illuminated manuscripts and incunables for individual patrons and monasteries in and around the city. Some of his most significant works were commissions for Pietro Barozzi, Bishop of Padua for whom he worked from 1487 to 1506. He has been described as ?the most important personality of the Paduan Renaissance in the field of illumination for the output, continuity and quality of his contributions?: L.P. Gnaccolini, Dizionario biografico dei miniatori italiani, 2004, pp.36-9. The present initial, with the pronounced features, attentive modelling and careful and complex build-up of brushstrokes, shows affinities with his work in the last decades of the 15th century including incunables for Barozzi (items 155-8 in La Miniatura a Padova dal medioevo al settecento, eds G.B. Baldisssin, G. Mariani Canova, F. Toniolo, exh. cat. 1999 pp.382-6) and, for example, the initial with Christ Blessing St Peter in the British Library (Add. 71119E). A figure of a fool was the traditional introductory illustration for Psalm 52, which … [Click Below for Full Description]

this is not the ordinary foxes book of Martyrs.

Louis L'Amour
This lot is 121 books of the Louis L'Amour Collection. This special collection was only available by subscription and took over 10 years to collect as the books were issued every 5-6 weeks. This set is a more recent printing, so it has less age and more sheen than many comparable auctions. These books have been dusted, wiped clean where necessary. 95% of these books come from a single owner. I am a college professor and oversee a 100,000 volume library. I have rated the books in this auction according to a very strict rating system. 5 is for new and 1 is poor. These books have been rated according to Cover, Spine, Markings, Page Edges, Interior Pages. All of these books rate at least 3 and most of them 4 on this five point scale. One book had a sticker that was removed, one has a dent on the spine, a couple have gentle creases on the cover. THESE BOOKS ARE NOT AVAILABLE IN STORES AND THE LAST 10 BOOKS ARE AS VALUABLE AS THE REST OF THE SET. Those sales that are offering 80 or 90 or 100 books are missing the most valuable editions. See list below for all the titles. Look at the photos also--these books are packed and ready to go! Constructed out of hardcovers and brown faux leather/leatherette, these books are 9" tall by 6" wide. They also contain detail maps of the area covered in the setting of the books. L'Amour always set his stories in genuine locations, such as the Four Corners area of Colorado or the Blue Ridge mountains of Carolina. This set would be a great gift to upgrade your loved one's paperback collection! Shipped In six carefully packed boxes of about 20 pound … [Click Below for Full Description]

Petrus Comenstor [d.ca 1179] Strassburg: [Georg Husner] 15 July 1500. Small, slim folio [11.50'' tall x 8.50'' wide x 1.50'' thick]. Collates complete, lacking final blank leaf only. A good, solid and clean copy of this work. Colophon at the close in Latin translates 'printed in the year 1500 on the 15th day of July'. Some progressive worming to the latter part not affecting the visibility of the text greatly, mainly marginal. Solid, clean and sound overall. A rare early work scarcely located on the market. Last recorded auction copy located at Christies in 2002. 'The Historia Scholastica is a twelfth-century Biblical paraphrase written in Medieval Latin by Petrus Comestor. Sometimes called the "Medieval Popular Bible", it draws on the Bible and other sources, including the works of classical scholars and the Fathers of the Church, to present a universal history [universal, that is, from the perspective of medieval Europe]. The Historia Scholastica was a required part of the core curriculum at the University of Paris, Oxford and other universities, and a significant secondary source of popular biblical knowledge from its completion around 1173 through the fifteenth century, although after about 1350 it was gradually supplanted by newer works. It was translated into every major Western European vernacular of the period. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Simon and Schuster LIVING HISTORY Hillary Rodham Clinton Limited Edition xxx out of 1500 SIGNED EDITION Signed by Hillary Rodham Clinton Book was never read and shrink wrap is still shrouded around slip cover. Book is in mint like new condition. Hillary Rodham Clinton is known to hundreds of millions of people around the world. Yet few beyond her close friends and family have ever heard her account of her extraordinary journey. She writes with candor, humor and passion about her upbringing in suburban, middle-class America in the 1950s and her transformation from Goldwater Girl to student activist to controversial First Lady. Living History is her revealing memoir of life through the White House years. It is also her chronicle of living history with Bill Clinton, a thirty-year adventure in love and politics that survives personal betrayal, relentless partisan investigations and constant public scrutiny. Hillary Rodham Clinton came of age during a time of tumultuous social and political change in America. Like many women of her generation, she grew up with choices and opportunities unknown to her mother or grandmother. She charted her own course through unexplored terrain -- responding to the changing times and her own internal compass -- and became an emblem for some and a lightning rod for others. Wife, mother, lawyer, advocate and international icon, she has lived through America's great political wars, from Watergate to Whitewater. The only First Lady to play a major role in shaping domestic legislation, Hillary Rodham Clinton traveled tirelessly around the country to ch … [Click Below for Full Description]

Condition: Etat correct. [Click Below for Full Description]

1500. 5-line initial in pale pink infilled with a strawberry, 10 one- and two-line initials in grey on red and brown grounds, full Ghent/Bruges naturalistic border composed of a large grotesque at the foot, coloured flowers (including a rose and thistles) and leaves, a snail, two butterflies and another insect. Size of leaf: 113 x 87mm. 17 lines of text in a rounded italianate gothic hand. A very fine leaf which was produced in Bruges at the greatest period of Ghent / Bruges trompe l'oeil illumination. Numerous illuminated manuscripts were produced there, many of them of a very high standard, such as this one, for a very wide market. Many of them were destined for Italy, including this leaf which is written in an attractive Italianate rounded gothic script. Other manuscripts would have been written in different scripts, depending on where the export market lay. The leaf introduces Lauds from the Hours of the Virgin.

1500. Single leaf, 164x102mm, with a full-page miniature presumably on the verso facing a prayer to St Francis on a recto in a Book of Hours, the reverse blank, some pigment loss especially near the lower right corner, the edges of the leaf discoloured through previous contact with card mount. Another leaf with a miniature of Sts Francis and St. Clare is so similar in terms of size, composition and style, that it probably belonged to the same manuscript (Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1958-151-4). It may, therefore, have been a Book of Hours, or another devotional manuscript, with a strong Franciscan element as we have the miniature of St. Francis alone and then one of both St. Francis and St. Clare, one of his first followers, in a sister leaf. In 1224 Francis of Assisi was on retreat on Mount Alverna with his companion Thomas of Celano: Thomas reported that Francis saw a vision of a seraph with his arms outspread and feet together, in the shape of a cross, and while contemplating it marks appeared like those of Christ at his Crucifixion, on his hands, feet, and side, where they remained until his death two years later. The building in the background of the miniature is perhaps intended to represent the chapel of the Portiuncula, where the Franciscan order was founded, or Francis?s church at Assisi itself. Philadelphia Museum of Art, St. Francis and St. Catherine [sic]. The Samuel S. White 3rd and Vera White Collection, 1958-151-4
