, 1500. 1500. Hardcover (Vellum). Hardcover (Vellum). Undated, ca 15th-16th century manuscript on laid paper (judging from the use of Arabic headings but with no parallel text, it is much more likely to be earlier than this than later), rebound in modern vellum (possibly reclaimed vellum). 10 leaves, apparently continuous and the first leaf with an architectural border with the Greek phrase "with God" possibly representing the beginning of the book. The Coptic is in an unusual hand that is difficult to place with any precision, but it is likely Egypt and the book came with a note that stated that it was from the Wadi Natrun Monasteries. In any case, a very attractively written manuscript with rubrication and initial flourishes. Size: Octavo (8vo). Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Religion & Theology; Antiquarian & Rare. Inventory No: 043832.

Hötzsch, Paul:
. . WESTON, EDWARD
New York: Dell Sloan & Pearce. New York: Dell Sloan & Pearce. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. FIRST EDITION, one of only 1500 copies initialed by Weston. In the rare original dust jacket in exceptionally good condition. With essays by Robinson Jeffers, Merle Armitage, and Donald Bear. Illustrated with folio reproductions of fifty of Weston's photographs. "Though [50 Photographs] includes all of Weston's genres--landscapes, nudes, still lifes, and portraits--it is an unusual selection, more edgy than iconic...The overall effect...is to make visible the real legacy of Weston's work, the way it influenced so much of what would come after. The 50 photographs are followed by a portrait of Weston himself, taken by his son Cole in Point Lobos in 1946, in which the old man is shown wedged between boulders: alert, watchful, mobile, and as sound as stone" (David Levi-Strauss in The Book of 101 Books). Roth 128. Open Book 150.
New York: Duell Sloan & Pearce, 1947. Folio, original cloth, original dust jacket. Neat early owner signature on half-title. Cloth extraordinarily clean; dust jacket with half-inch chip at top of spine, edgewear, and small tape repair on rear. Tiny hole beginning at rear board and extending into last few pages of text, including a barely noticeable pinhole in Weston portrait and photograph #50. (Hole is 2mm diameter at the rear board - its largest point- and shrinks as it enters text.) An excellent copy in the rare dust jacket - one of the finest examples we've seen of the notoriously fragile jacket.

FRANK, ANNE
Amsterdam: Contact. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. RARE FIRST EDITION, one of only 1500 copies printed, of one of the central works of the twentieth century. Complete with three photographic plates, including the frontispiece portrait of Anne Frank. "The diary written by Anne Frank is probably the single most widely read book to come out of the Holocaust (Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, 1952; first published as Het Achterhuis, 1947). Millions of readers have read the story of the teenage girl's two years in hiding. It has been translated into more than thirty-five languages and published in as many countries. Her diary was also the foundation for a successful drama performed worldwide (The Diary of Anne Frank, 1956) and a film of the same title (1959). Especially in the last twenty years, many schoolchildren and adults alike have had their first exposure to the effects of Adolf Hitler's war through Anne's writing. Anne's diary so captured the attention of the world that her name has become symbolic of the six million Jewish victims of the Shoah… "To many, Anne Frank has become a symbol of the strength and optimism of the human spirit in the midst of tragedy. In July 1944 Anne wrote what was to become the most famous line of her diary and the one most often used to symbolize her spirit. 'In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart'… Anne's writing put a human face to the unfathomable statistics of the millions of individuals who suffered and died" (Sarita Cargas, Encyclopedia of Holocaust L … [Click Below for Full Description]

AN ILLUMINATED VELLUM MANUSCRIPT LEAF WITH AN EXCELLENT MINIATURE OF SAINT LUKE, FROM A BOOK OF HOURS IN LATIN
Central or Northern France, probably Bourges, early, 1500. Hardcover. 184 x 127 mm (7 1/4 x 5"). Single column, 12 lines of text on the side with the miniature, 23 lines on the other side, in a fine, large bâtarde hand. Rubrics in red, two small initials and one pretty three-line "I" in colors and brushed gold, the latter in pink and white and accented by a long-stemmed red rose, the same side WITH A RICHLY DETAILED MINIATURE OF SAINT LUKE (measuring 64 x 92 mm.) at his desk in a comfortably furnished room, writing the Gospel under the watchful gaze of his bull, shown here with spread red wings, the miniature with five lines of text above and seven below, and both the text and the miniature with their own thin gilt frame. The illuminated initial on the plainer side partly obscured (by the remnant of mounting tissue?), a touch of wrinkling to left and right edges, other trivial imperfections, but still IN FINE CONDITION, the paint especially rich, and the vellum fresh, clean, and bright. From the same large, fine Book of Hours as the previous item, this leaf presents us with an uncommon design, the miniature being flanked by text above and below, rather than enclosed by a decorative border. Here we see Luke at the center of the room, sitting at his writing desk wearing a blue robe from beneath which peek unexpectedly bright red socks (which not only serve to keep the saint's feet warm, but also add a balanced splash of bright color opposite the bull's magnificent wings). Behind the Evangelist and to the right is a window through which we glimpse green trees and blue … [Click Below for Full Description]

Marco, Georg (1863-1923)
628 with frontispiece, diagrams, plates and tables. Royal octavo (9 1/2 x 6 1/4") bound in original three quarter pebbled boards with spine label. (Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:5268) First edition. The richly endowed Barmen Chess Association commemorated its 40th year anniversary with a celebration centered around two major tournaments and three strong "Hauptturnieren." The innovative organizers added such melodious entertainment as a "Singspiel" involving a 60 person chorus and a three act musical comedy, "Der Seekadett." The latter feature a game with children as chessmen and an original music score the now famous Barmen Chess Waltz. Bachmann opines that it was a "grand chess feast, made even nicer by Rheinsche friendliness." The two principal contests were divided into "A" and "B" categories - the first being reserved for experienced grandmasters and masters, the second for promising young masters who had not achieved a tournament victory. First and second prizes in this category (1500 and 1000 Mmrks, respectively) were divided between Janowski (+9 -3 +3) and Maroczy (+7 -1 +7) with identical point totals of 10 1/2. The mercurial Janowski head the victory list with nine wins, but dropped full points to Bernstein, Berger and Gottschall - while an obviously fatigued Maroczy lost only once to John. The New World sensation, Marshall (+8 -3 +3), took third place laurels and 700 marks, a scant half point behind the two pacesetters. Schlechter and Bernstein divided the fourth and fifth prizes (400 marks) with identical scores of +7 -4 =4. The genial Wiener drew a blan … [Click Below for Full Description]

1500. [Illuminated Manuscript]
France: np. 1st Edition. No Binding. Very Good. Richly colored miniature of Kind David, with the text of Psalm 6, from a European (most likely French) Book of Hours, c.1500, on vellum. The recto depicts King David richly adorned with gold and blue robes looking up at an image of God in the sky. David is pictured in a meadow surrounded by trees and rocks, with his harp in a bag next to him. Framing the miniature are classical columns with cherubs on top. The text of Psalm 6 begins with a three-line gold and silver initial ("D") in a banner across the bottom of the miniature. The text, which continues on the recto, contains six additional single-line initials in red, blue, and gold. [France?]: c1500. One leaf on vellum, approx. 7.5 x 5 inches. A spot of dampstaining to the top of the miniature (in the sky), the image of God blurry. A few wrinkles to the vellum. A beautiful leaf with strong colors. The text (Palm 6) in Latin: Domine, ne in furore tuo arguas me, neque in ira tua corripias me. Miserere mei, Domine, quoniam infirmus sum ; sana me, Domine, quoniam conturbata sunt ossa mea. Et anima mea turbata est valde ; sed tu, Domine, usquequo ? Convertere, Domine, et eripe animam meam ; salvum me fac propter misericordiam tuam. Carroll, Lewis
Limited Editions Club, 0000. Two volumes, one reddish brown and blue leather, gilt decorated, all edges gilt. OF PARTICULAR INTEREST: laid in are two full-page letters from Alice Hargreave's (nee Liddell) son, one page each, consisting of dickering between the LEC and his mother about having her sign this edition. She was 80 years old at the time, but finally agreed to sign each copy of "Wonderland" for $2.50 a signature. I don't know if that is what she eventually received, or if the poor soul was able to sign all 1500 of them, a daunting task at any age, but she has signed this copy of "Wonderland." This is Number 278, NOT signed by the illustrator, who was probably dead by that time. The printing date (as evidenced on the title page) is 1932 on Wonderland (the one signed by Hargreaves) and 1935 on Through the Looking-Glass. Both volumes are fine, in near fine slipcases. Apparently an enormous amount has been written about the relationship between Carroll and Alice Liddell, some of it a bit accusatory. Who knows? But an interesting accompaniment to a book, at the very least! Each volume has the previous owner's bookplate.. Hardcover. Near Fine/No Jacket. Illus. by John Tenniel.

STEINBECK, JOHN
New York: Viking Press. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. SIGNED LIMITED FIRST EDITION, one of only 1500 copies signed by Steinbeck. Essential to any Steinbeck collection. Steinbeck "considered Eden to be his magnum opus, the crowning achievement of his life's work. Similar to how Steinbeck spent years researching and reflecting on Zapata, and similar to how Steinbeck gradually put pieces together for The Grapes of Wrath in the 1930's, the writer let East of Eden gestate in his mind for decades. He thus 'nurtured' it 'all of his life and… [it] seemed to grow with him until the time of writing was at hand' … [To] one correspondent, Steinbeck placed East of Eden in the context of his life and work, concluding, 'That earlier work was practice for this… The rest was practice'. In another letter, Steinbeck asserted, 'I still think it is The Book, as far as I am concerned. Always before I have held something back for later. Nothing is held back here. This is not practice for a future. This is what I have practiced for…'" (Michael Price, John Steinbeck). New York: The Viking Press, 1952. Octavo, original green cloth, original cardboard slipcase. Book near-fine with spine gilt a trifle dull; a little wear to slipcase with fading at top edge. A beautiful copy- rare in such good condition.
