1500. Hardcover (Vellum). Undated, ca 15th-16th century manuscript on laid paper (judging from the use of Arabic headings but with no parallel text, it is much more likely to be earlier than this than later), rebound in modern vellum (possibly reclaimed vellum). 10 leaves, apparently continuous and the first leaf with an architectural border with the Greek phrase "with God" possibly representing the beginning of the book. The Coptic is in an unusual hand that is difficult to place with any precision, but it is likely Egypt and the book came with a note that stated that it was from the Wadi Natrun Monasteries. In any case, a very attractively written manuscript with rubrication and initial flourishes. Size: Octavo (8vo). Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. BINDING: Bound in eighteenth-century mottled calf. TEXT: Deluxe professionally-made copy of a relatively uncommon monastic text, an Office Lectionary, of ample format with wide margins, expertly written in a beautiful calligraphic hand with much pen flourishing. Office Lectionaries include the lessons for the Divine Office from the Bible and the writings of the Fathers, here arranged beginning with the Temporal from the first Sunday in Advent to the 25th Sunday after Pentecost, and the Office of the Dedication of a Church, followed by the Sanctoral from the eve of Saint Andrew to the Feast of Saint Katherine. These elegant initials are products of the Ghent-Bruges school of illumination and resemble those issuing from the workshop of the Master of the Prayer Books of c. 1500. [Illuminated Manuscript]
France: np. 1st Edition. No Binding. Very Good. Richly colored miniature of Kind David, with the text of Psalm 6, from a European (most likely French) Book of Hours, c.1500, on vellum. The recto depicts King David richly adorned with gold and blue robes looking up at an image of God in the sky. David is pictured in a meadow surrounded by trees and rocks, with his harp in a bag next to him. Framing the miniature are classical columns with cherubs on top. The text of Psalm 6 begins with a three-line gold and silver initial ("D") in a banner across the bottom of the miniature. The text, which continues on the recto, contains six additional single-line initials in red, blue, and gold. [France?]: c1500. One leaf on vellum, approx. 7.5 x 5 inches. A spot of dampstaining to the top of the miniature (in the sky), the image of God blurry. A few wrinkles to the vellum. A beautiful leaf with strong colors. The text (Palm 6) in Latin: Domine, ne in furore tuo arguas me, neque in ira tua corripias me. Miserere mei, Domine, quoniam infirmus sum ; sana me, Domine, quoniam conturbata sunt ossa mea. Carroll, Lewis
Limited Editions Club, 0000. Two volumes, one reddish brown and blue leather, gilt decorated, all edges gilt. OF PARTICULAR INTEREST: laid in are two full-page letters from Alice Hargreave's (nee Liddell) son, one page each, consisting of dickering between the LEC and his mother about having her sign this edition. She was 80 years old at the time, but finally agreed to sign each copy of "Wonderland" for $2.50 a signature. I don't know if that is what she eventually received, or if the poor soul was able to sign all 1500 of them, a daunting task at any age, but she has signed this copy of "Wonderland." This is Number 278, NOT signed by the illustrator, who was probably dead by that time. The printing date (as evidenced on the title page) is 1932 on Wonderland (the one signed by Hargreaves) and 1935 on Through the Looking-Glass. Both volumes are fine, in near fine slipcases. Apparently an enormous amount has been written about the relationship between Carroll and Alice Liddell, some of it a bit accusatory. Who knows? But an interesting accompaniment to a book, at the very least! Each volume has the previous owner's bookplate.. Hardcover. Near Fine/No Jacket. Illus. by John Tenniel.

STEINBECK, JOHN
New York: Viking Press. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. SIGNED LIMITED FIRST EDITION, one of only 1500 copies signed by Steinbeck. Essential to any Steinbeck collection. Steinbeck "considered Eden to be his magnum opus, the crowning achievement of his life's work. Similar to how Steinbeck spent years researching and reflecting on Zapata, and similar to how Steinbeck gradually put pieces together for The Grapes of Wrath in the 1930's, the writer let East of Eden gestate in his mind for decades. He thus 'nurtured' it 'all of his life and… [it] seemed to grow with him until the time of writing was at hand' … [To] one correspondent, Steinbeck placed East of Eden in the context of his life and work, concluding, 'That earlier work was practice for this… The rest was practice'. In another letter, Steinbeck asserted, 'I still think it is The Book, as far as I am concerned. Always before I have held something back for later. Nothing is held back here. This is not practice for a future. This is what I have practiced for…'" (Michael Price, John Steinbeck). New York: The Viking Press, 1952. Octavo, original green cloth, original cardboard slipcase. Book near-fine with spine gilt a trifle dull; a little wear to slipcase with fading at top edge. A beautiful copy- rare in such good condition.

FRANK, ANNE
Amsterdam: Contact. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. RARE FIRST EDITION, one of only 1500 copies printed, of one of the central works of the twentieth century. Complete with three photographic plates, including the frontispiece portrait of Anne Frank. "The diary written by Anne Frank is probably the single most widely read book to come out of the Holocaust (Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, 1952; first published as Het Achterhuis, 1947). Millions of readers have read the story of the teenage girl's two years in hiding. It has been translated into more than thirty-five languages and published in as many countries. Her diary was also the foundation for a successful drama performed worldwide (The Diary of Anne Frank, 1956) and a film of the same title (1959). Especially in the last twenty years, many schoolchildren and adults alike have had their first exposure to the effects of Adolf Hitler's war through Anne's writing. Anne's diary so captured the attention of the world that her name has become symbolic of the six million Jewish victims of the Shoah… "To many, Anne Frank has become a symbol of the strength and optimism of the human spirit in the midst of tragedy. In July 1944 Anne wrote what was to become the most famous line of her diary and the one most often used to symbolize her spirit. 'In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart'… Anne's writing put a human face to the unfathomable statistics of the millions of individuals who suffered and died" (Sarita Cargas, Encyclopedia of Holocaust L … [Click Below for Full Description]

Albrecht DURER (Norimberga 1471 - 1528)
Bulino, 1500 circa, monogrammato in lastra in basso a destra. Capolavoro dell?arte ornamentale. "Engraving, circa 1500, signed on plate at the bottom right. Example in the first variant of seven described by Meder. A magnificent impression, rich in tone, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark ""high crown"" (Meder 20 typical of this first issue), complete with the marginal line, small restoration at the corners perfectly executed, in excellent condition.Although Dürer made by King Christian of Denmark in 1521, and the mem … [Click Below for Full Description]

Before his death, Erasmus (1466–1536) divided his writings into nine ordines (categories) for posthumous publication. This is the second edition of his collected works, first published in nine volumes by Froben in 1540. Like the original, this set includes additions by authors from the Dutch humanist's international circle and portraits of the same, as well as => myriad engravings after Holbein. The printer, Pieter van der Aa (1659–1733), was an apprentice of Daniel van Gaasbeeck (fl. 1655–92) and primarily known for maps and travel books.    The text in all volumes is in Latin with some Greek, printed in roman and italic, mostly double-column with sidenotes and many large woodcut initials and tailpieces, as well as some engraved headpieces. Vol. I has both a general title-page and a volume title-page; each of the volume title-pages is printed in red and … [Click Below for Full Description]

The Pablo Eisenberg Collection of Native American Literature comprises nearly 1500 volumes written by American Indian writers, from the 1700s to the 21st century -- including myths and legends, tribal histories, religious tracts, biographies and memoirs, fiction, poetry, drama and historical and political writings. It includes nearly 600 volumes of nonfiction and almost 900 volumes of literary work. ¶ 87 books of nonfiction dating from 1900 or before, going back to 1772. This is notable, considering that what is generally identified as the first Native American memoir, William Apes's A Son of the Forest, wasn't published until 1829. ¶ 13 books of fiction dating from 1900 or earlier: one of the important surveys of the field of Native American literature, Choctaw-Cherokee writer Louis Owens's Other Destinies, asserted that prior to N. Scott Momaday's Pulitzer Prize-winning House Made of Dawn in 1968, there had only been nine novels by Native American writers ever published. Definitions can vary, but this collection has 13 prior to 1900 whereas Owens saw only nine prior to 1968. One of the 13 is considered to be the first fiction published by a Native American writer -- an 1820 pamphlet containing a fictionalized life story of an Indian woman, written by a Christianized Indian as an inspirational religious tale. ¶ The collection includes not only the early and hard-to-find books by such writers as Mourning Dove, Zitkala Sa (Gertrude Bonnin), D'Arcy McNickle, Ella Deloria, Charles Eastman and Pauline Johnson, dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuri … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mayno, Jason de
[Paris]: [Georg Wolf and Thielman Kerver], [1500 per GW, but possibly earlier]. Disbound. Quarto; 6 leaves, Aaa\6. 41 lines per page. Disbound. Minor foxing. Small abrasion in AAA6, affecting one word of text. Reference: GW M2239610; not in ISTC; not in HC, etc. When the German ex-pat printer Georg Wolf died in Paris in 1499, having established no fewer than four presses in that city, his partner Thielman Kerver took over the equipment and the business. Kerver was known principally as a stationer (effectively, a bookseller) before he went into business with Wolf in 1497, and even in the sixteenth century his name sometimes appears in colophons as "bibliopola," or bookseller, as well as printer. He inherited Wolf's pioneering woodcut criblé initials, a technique of producing a white letter on a black background decorated with tiny white dots. The technique was popularized later in the sixteenth century by Geoffrey Tory, Philippe de Colines, and Henri Estienne. & It is not clear why Kerver published the oration that Jason De Mayno had delivered at the wedding of Bianca Maria Sforza and the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I at Innsbruck six years (and several printings) earlier. The epithalamion echoed around Italy in 1494 and 1495, and then it was revived in this printing before being picked up again for inclusion in several early sixteenth-century oratorical anthologies. & As in most other editions of the oration, there is a faux "colophon" that reads "Actum Ispurch die vii maii Anno a nata li christiano M.cccc.xciiii" (done at Innsbruck on May 7, 1494; the weird used of " … [Click Below for Full Description]

Louis Masreliez (Paris 1748-Stockholm 1810)
Etsning på blågrått papper. Med tillägnan etsad i plåten nedanför bilden i konstnärens handstil: "Premier essai dedié a mon cher père". 16,5 × 13 cm. Litteratur: E. & C. Hultmark & C. D. Moselius, Svenska kopparstickare och etsare 1500-1944 (1944), s. 232. Ngt dekorerad förgylld ram (Lövhammar). Syrafri passepartout..

Original buckram with superb full gilt decoration designed by Beardsley, some slight signs of ageing but a very good copy, London, J. M. Dent, 1893. A KEY WORK IN THE HISTORY OF BOOK ILLUSTRATION AND A DEFINING WORK OF THE 1890's DECADENCE. John M. Dent commissioned the twenty-year-old Beardsley to produce this edition of Le Morte D'Arthur. The 351 designs appearing in the first edition required eighteen months for the artist to complete. Of this, Beardsley's first major work, John Lewis states: "In Le Morte d'Arthur Beardsley learnt his job, but .. if he had never illustrated another book, this edition of Morte d'Arthur could stand as a monument of decorative book illustration" [The Twentieth Century Book, pp. 148-149].

AURELIUS THEODOSIUS MACROBIUS
The complete book, two parts in one volume, folio, 29,8x21cm. Modern half-calf binding covered by 15th century Italian antiphonar sheets, a cover material split at back hinge, decorative binding 122 leaves including woodcut vignettes, 7 small schematic woodcuts and A HALF PAGE WOODCUT WORLD MAP with a diameter of 13,5cm. Venice 1500 Ambrosius Macrobius was a fifth-century AD Roman philosopher. His works had great popularity through the Middle Ages and his text refers to a world map which was first printed in 1483. "His neoplatonic commentary on Cicero includes, among many references to the pseudo-sciences, a geographic concept which is different from that of Ptolemy. The inhabited world north of the Equator is balanced by a southern continent and divided from it by water" (Shirley). First printed edition is Brescia, 1483. Our copy is the last of four incunabula editions and is by Shirley marked "Block 4" where the image represented by the incised surface has been reversed. It is a woodcut with handcut lettering. There are several later 16th century Venice editions which show the popularity of his works, but for a collector it is important to acquire one of the pre-1501 incunabula editions.. In a very good condition. Some light browning or fingermarks, a few leaves with contemporary marginalia. The leaves of quires e1 and e6 printed on thinner paper. Illuminated miniature on vellum
Bruges: 1500. Single leaf, image measures 98 x 68 cms with small margins, painted on vellum and heightened with gold, verso blank, framed and glazed in a standing frame. Slight smudge to the tip of the nose, otherwise in good condition. A lovely, haunting image of Christ the Savior, holding an orb of translucent crystal and making the traditional gesture of blessing with his right hand. ?'Salvator Mundi?", or Savior of the World, is a subject in iconography depicting Christ with his right hand raised in blessing and his left hand holding an orb surmounted by a cross, known as a globus cruciger. The latter symbolizes the Earth, and the whole composition has strong eschatological undertones. The theme was made popular by Northern painters such as Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling, and Albrecht DŸrer. There are also several versions of the theme attributed to Titian, notably the one in the Hermitage Museum. In France, Leonardo da Vinci painted the subject for Louis XII of France between 1506 and 1513. Christopher de Hamel writes: ?'Your leaf was illuminated in Bruges around 1500, by the workshop which produced Vatican Vat.Lat. 10293, Brussels Bibl.Roy.
