Abraham ORTELIUS (1527 - 1598), Antwerp, between 1570 - 1574, Copper engraving (two worm holes in the lower white margin, otherwise in a good condition), plate size: 37,5 x 49 cm (14.75 x 19.30 Inches).
- This highly decorative first state of the map of Asia by Abraham Ortelius shows the Middle East, Russia, India, China, South East Asia with Indonesia and Philippines, New Guinea a part or Australia, with misprojection of Japan and very distinct Northeast Passage. This classic map was based upon a rare early map of Asia by Giacomo Gastaldi (c. 1500 - 1566) and geographical researches of a Kurdishhistorian and geographer Abu al-Fida (??? ???????; 1273 – 1331). Ortelius published it in his work Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, one of the most famous atlases of all times. This first edition of the map, which distinguishes itself from the second edition only by faint printed words ‘Cum Privilegio’ in the lower left corner and two names of places (Frarfana in th upper right corner, written with a capital letter, and the town Ara above Aden, which disappears in the second state) was published in the earliest editions of the atlas between 1570-1574. This map was issued in one of the first four Latin editions. References: Van der Broecke, 6. _______________________________________ Höchst dekorative Karte zeigt Asien. CELLINI, Benvenuto.
Adams C-1240; Besterman, Old Art Books, p. 23; Cicognara 273; Honeyman 659; Schlosser 398-399; BMC STC Italian, p. 164. First edition of the treatises on the arts of the goldsmith and the sculptor by Benvenuto Cellini (1500-1571), one of the most important artists of Mannerism. Cellini divulges the wonderful secrets and methods of the goldsmith, designing medals, enamelling, minting coins, soldering, tinting diamonds, etc. and also the techniques of the Florentine sculptors of the `quattrocento', like those of Donatello who attacked the block directly without the use of large scale models. There is also a crucial passage on Michelangelo's sculptural technique: how he outlined the figure in charcoal on the block, made large scale clay models, and the kind of chisels and drills Michelangelo used. Oddly enough Cellini's treatises were not republished till 1731, nor translated until the 19th century. With an ownerships' inscription of Domenico Martinelli di Lucca on the second blank page, lacking a blank leaf, some slight foxing and a few marginal stains. A very good copy.

1500. 8vo. 2½ pp. With monogrammed letterhead and two oval stamps (Jakob Schwarz). To the German writer and autograph collector Eugen Wolbe, concerning the acquisition of a manuscript of the great Italian poet Giacomo Leopardi, which is to be auctioned off by S. Martin Fraenkel in Berlin and which Zweig is determined to have. WESTON, EDWARD
1500. New York: Duell Sloan & Pearce. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. FIRST EDITION, one of only 1500 copies initialed by Weston. In the rare original dust jacket in exceptionally good condition. With essays by Robinson Jeffers, Merle Armitage, and Donald Bear. Illustrated with folio reproductions of fifty of Weston's photographs. "Though [50 Photographs] includes all of Weston's genres--landscapes, nudes, still lifes, and portraits--it is an unusual selection, more edgy than iconic... The overall effect... is to make visible the real legacy of Weston's work, the way it influenced so much of what would come after. The 50 photographs are followed by a portrait of Weston himself, taken by his son Cole in Point Lobos in 1946, in which the old man is shown wedged between boulders: alert, watchful, mobile, and as sound as stone" (David Levi-Strauss in The Book of 101 Books). Roth 128. Open Book 150.

New York: Duell Sloan & Pearce, 1947. Folio, original cloth, original dust jacket. Owner bookplate and stamp on front free endpaper; owner stamp also on rear pastedown and at bottom of limitation page. Cloth very clean; dust jacket with light edgewear. An excellent copy in the rare dust jacket - one of the finest examples we've seen of the notoriously fragile jacket.

With foreword by Johannes de Turrecremata and Matthias de Suecia. Published by Florian Waldorf. Nürnberg: A. Koberger, 21. IX. 1500. With 59, 7 full-page woodcuts & 52 smaller cuts assembled to form 10 more full-page illustrations, the woodcuts colored by a contemporary hand in red/orange and yellow. Initials in same colour. 57 lines & headline; double column. Folio. 312 leaves. Bound in contemporary dyed halfleather with renewed wooden boards and clasps. 31,5 x 22 cm. * First Nürnberger edition, the most important Scandinavian religious work in the late Middle Ages. The 1500 edition produced in Nuremberg by one of the giants of the early printing period, Anton Koberger, is notable for the likely participation of another famous native of Nuremberg, the artist Albrecht Durer (1471-1528), who was Koberger's godson. It is generally accepted that Durer at least designed the illustrative woodcuts, even if another hand performed the actual cutting of the blocks. Compared with other Northern European book illustrations of the period, the Birgitta woodcuts show a readiness to move away from strict geometric patterning towards a more naturalistic grouping of figures and to endow these figures with individual expressions. Durer had visited Venice in the mid-1490s and been deeply influenced by the humanism of Italian Renaissance painters. Thematicly and compositionally the illustrations are similar to the Lübeck edition from 1492.Birgitta, or Bridget, was a Swedish mystic, born in 1303 and married, at age thirteen, to the wealthy nobleman Ulf Gudmarrson, to whom she bore eight childr … [Click Below for Full Description]

[FRANCE] FRENCH ILLUMINATOR
Paris or Rouen: circa 1475-, 1500. Illuminated leaf, 215 x 139 mm., with a panel border on both sides of the leaf composed of blue and gold acanthus and coloured flowers and leaves on shaped grounds of liquid gold, three 2-line initials in pink with white tracery, naturalistic branch line fillers, 24 lines of text in gothic script; slight marginal stain otherwise in fine condition. A beautifully illuminated leaf from a luxurious fifteenth-century French Book of Hours. This leaf is from the central text of the Book of Hours, the "Little Office of the Blessed Virgin" (or Hours of the Virgin), which was modelled on the Divine Office and represents a shorter version of the devotions performed at the eight canonical hours of the day.The panel border on each face of the page is composed of blue and gold acanthus leaves alternating with mauve, red, blue and white flowers on shaped grounds of liquid gold. The text contains three 2-line initials in white on pink grounds, one single-line initial in liquid gold on red and eleven line-fillers in similar colours, including some naturalistic branch motifs. The delicate initials suggest that it was executed in either Paris or Rouen, while the unusual geometric forms picked out in liquid gold in the margins, clearly show this to be work dating from the late 1400s.
