[Click Below for Full Description]

APIANUS, Petrus.
Adams A-1289; DSB I, pp. 178-179; Van Ortroy, Apian 106; Zinner, Astron. Instrumente, pp. 233-234; cf. WorldCat (microfilm only). First edition, in Latin and German, of Apianus's description of his newly invented sundial in the form of a poplar leaf. This instrument can be used to tell the hours of the day, the times of sunrise and sunset, and the so-called "Jewish" hours dividing the time between sunrise and sunset into 12 parts. The stunning woodcuts were executed by Hans Brosamer (ca. 1500-1554), with his monogram on the title woodcut next to the image of a woodblock cutter's knife. The title in the present copy is in an uncorrected state, with "RFCENS" and "RFDACTUM" for "RECENS" and "REDACTUM."Apianus (1495-1552), cartographer and professor of mathematics at the University of Ingolstadt, was a pioneer in the design of astronomical and geographical instruments. He set up a printing office in his own home in order to oversee his scientific publications. With wormholes slightly affecting the text and illustrations, but otherwise a very good copy and with generous margins. Lacking the final blank leaf, but with a contemporary fly-leaf at the front and another at the back. A pioneering horological work, beautifully illustrated.

Subjects covered include the Dambusters Raid (four covers), the 40th anniversary of the Hawker Hurricane, the 60th anniversary of the formation of 35 Squadron, and the last flight from Royal Airforce Masirah. There are 27 covers featuring the Supermarine Spitfire, including 21 copies of a single cover, 'Michell's Spitfire', signed by different pilots and postmarked 'Duxford '97 Air Show' (each of these is number 17 of the limited edition of 18). In all, 29 covers are postmarked in the 1990s, four in the 1980s and three in the 1970s. The latter (signed by Bader, Bennett and Johnson) have no stated edition numbers. For the rest, two are 'limited' to 1250 and 1500 respectively, one each to 40, 50 and 75, and the balance range in quantity from six to 31. Most covers are accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and relevant biographical information; all but one cover is in very fine condition (and the odd one out has merely a trifling blemish to the verso). A quantity of related prospectuses and invoices are included.

BENIVIENI Girolamo
in-folio, (290 x 210 mm), ff. [Click Below for Full Description]

Magnus, Albertus; Ripelin, Hugo; Incunabula.
Impressum Venetijs : P[er] magistrum Petru[m] de Pare[n]ghis Pergome[n]se[m], Venice: 1500. [176] p. Lacks first leaf, which had only two title lines; a few other leaves with very slight loss. Latin text. 4to. 220 mm. Attractive half leather binding; slight wear at extremities. Binding by Roger de Coverly and Sons. Roger de Coverly, was a late nineteenth century London binder. Cobden-Sanderon studied binding in his shop in 1883, and in 1894, the year that Cobden-Sanderson established the Doves Bindery, Charles McLeish the younger was apprenticed to de Coverly, who was then working with his two sons. This work was attributed to Saint Albertus Magnus (1193?-1280), but likely by Hugo Argentinensis (Hugh Ripelin of Strasburg) [1205?-1270?], the Compendium Theologicae Veritatis was one of the most widely read manuals of practical theology. Giving an abstract theological context for practical advice on living a Christian life. At least 800 manuscripts survive, as well as fourteen incunabula editions. It was translated into French, German, Dutch, Italian and Armenian. The influence of the Compendium was especially strong in Germany and the Empire, but can be discerned across Europe: from the works of Dante to those of the English mystic Richard Rolle; to the author of an Icelandic penitential manual. Knowledge of its author's true name, Hugo Ripelin (Hugo Argentinensis of Strasbourg), was not widespread and Hugo's name did not appear in any of the printed editions. Hugo, therefore, fell into obscurity as his enormously popular work was attributed to his Dominican contemporary, St … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

CLAUDIANUS CLAUDIUS.
S.N.T. (MILANO, 1500-1502?). In-folio; 8 cc.nn., LII cc.; legatura moderna in mezza pelle. GW 7070c. Reichling 475. Sandal 444. Pellechet 3806. Proctor 6091.
