Calcutta (Kolkata), The Bible Translation Society, American and Foreign Bible Society, 1849. 12mo. With the title in Hindustani (Urdu) and English, and the text in Urdu only. Title cut round and mounted, trace of dampstaining in upper gutter margins throughout, more staining in last two quires, last leaf with marginal repair and restoration in gutter margin, affecting first letter in line 6. Modern parchment, edges red-speckled. Provenance: Per Hierta, inscription in pen, in Swedish, on front flyleaf; [Otto Smith, of Karlshamn, Sweden], sale, Basel, Moirandat, 24 October 2014, lot 31.*** only edition, a very rare survival. This guide to the proper forms of epistolary address, written mainly for German scribes but also for any literate writer of German, contains correct phrases for the openings and closings of letters to personages of rank. The first half is devoted to the clergy, providing salutations for the Pope, the Eastern Patriarchs, the ?"seven Cardinal Archbishops,?" the Metropolitan of Rhodes, and on down through the clerical ranks. Prioresses and nuns are included. The secular section commences with the Holy Roman Emperor, on f. D3v, and concludes with simple burghers and their wives, and familial greetings, from wives writing to their husbands and from parents to their children (and vice-versa). The last page contains a handy table of political geography, listing the four principal royal realms: Rome, France, Poland and Hungary, the three clerical electors (Churfürsten): Mainz, Cologne, and Trier, the four upper Dukedoms: Burgundy, Bavaria, Braunschweig, and Austria, and so on. This handbook answered a need. The Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke lists 14 earlier editions of a different, shorter text, in German and Low German, the earliest from 1487, all surviving in a mere handful of copies. Those much shorter editions, in 6 or 8 leaves, are in reverse prder, commencing with the secular ranks, and have differently worded salutations. Designated by the Gesamtkatalog the Grosses Titelbüchlein (Great Book of Titles), this longer edition is also the only one with humanist content, including the prefatory poem by Filippo Beroaldo on the charges of the scribe, with a rhymed German translation (by the printer?), as well as a poem in Greek, extracted from Ausonius Epist. VIII (fol. 3r-v). Wolfgang Schenk (d. 1510) was a graduate of the University of Erfurt, and that city?'s second printer. Active from ca. 1499 to 1507, he disposed of a good range of printing types, and was the first German printer to regularly use Greek types. GW lists 9 copies of this edition, this copy included, the others being: Herzog August Bibliothek, Bavarian State Library, Bamberg Stadtbibliothek (imperfect), Berlin SB (lacking last leaf), Dresden, Leipzig, British Library, and Vatican. There appear to be only two copies in American libraries of any of the 15th-century editions of these handbooks: Yale holds a copy of the Peter Berg, ca. 1488/89 edition (Goff B-1272), and a copy of an anonymous edition, identified as Memmingen: Albrecht Kunne, ca. 1493, is held by the Morgan Library (Goff B-1272a). H 4055 = 15532*; Hase, Bibliographie der Erfurter Drucke 17; BMC II:593; BSB-Ink T-363; GW 5706 (listing this copy). On the printer cf. Geldner I:219; Benzing, p. 108.

        Salvator Mundi

Bruges: 1500. Single leaf, image measures 98 x 68 cms with small margins, painted on vellum and heightened with gold, verso blank, framed and glazed in a standing frame. Slight smudge to the tip of the nose, otherwise in good condition. A lovely, haunting image of Christ the Savior, holding an orb of translucent crystal and making the traditional gesture of blessing with his right hand. ?'Salvator Mundi?", or Savior of the World, is a subject in iconography depicting Christ with his right hand raised in blessing and his left hand holding an orb surmounted by a cross, known as a globus cruciger. The latter symbolizes the Earth, and the whole composition has strong eschatological undertones. The theme was made popular by Northern painters such as Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling, and Albrecht DŸrer. There are also several versions of the theme attributed to Titian, notably the one in the Hermitage Museum. In France, Leonardo da Vinci painted the subject for Louis XII of France between 1506 and 1513. Christopher de Hamel writes: ?'Your leaf was illuminated in Bruges around 1500, by the workshop which produced Vatican Vat.Lat. 10293, Brussels Bibl.Roy. IV.237, Milan Ambrosiana, Ms S.P. 11.189, and others with distinctive architectual borders, described in B. Brinkmann, Offizium der Madonna der Codex Vat.Lat.10293 und Verwandte Kleine StudenenbŸcher mit ArchitecturenbordŸren (Zurich, 1992), esp. p.47. The same workshop illuminated a Book of Hours from the Crawford of Lakelands library, sold at Christie's, 26 June 1991, in which folio 14v is described by them as "Salvator Mundi, Christ holding the globe against blue ground, within golden gothic architecture", which is close enough to yours to make me wonder if it is the same miniature, now removed. The measurements there were given as 97 x 65mm.?"

78-year-old Ronald Reagan, who had just left the White House as the oldest serving U.S. President, shows his gratitude to God, telling his 96-year-old friend he?s ?so glad to hear how well you are feeling. I am too. It looks like we must have lived right. But then we could have some one up there looking after us ??

"Autograph Letter Signed ?Love Dutch? on both sides of his 6.25? x 4.25? card with a gilt presidential seal at top center above ?Ronald Reagan? engraved in black. With original 6.5? x 4.5? envelope, engraved return address at top left and Reagan?s engraved franking signature at top right, slit open at top. Not postmarked. Addressed by Reagan to ?Mrs. Peter MacArthur / Lake Worth Towers Apt. 507 / 1500 Luceran Ave. / Lake Worth Fla. / 33460.? Back flap imprinted with the gilt presidential seal. Fine condition. Mrs. Peter MacArthur was 96-year-old Lydia Hupfer ?Hup? McArthur (1893-1995), widow of the man who had given Reagan his first job after college. Peter MacArthur was the program director at radio station WOC in Davenport, Iowa, which shared its frequency with WHO Des Moines. In 1932, MacArthur gave 21-year-old recent Eureka College grad Ronald ?Dutch? Reagan a sports announcer?s job at WOC. In 1937, sportscaster Reagan went to the Chicago Cubs spring training camp in southern California to do play-by-play for WHO Des Moines. Impressed by his confidence and good looks, an agent arranged a screen test for the 26-year-old sports announcer at Warner Bros. Reagan signed a seven-year contract and moved to California. But he never forgot Pete and Hup MacArthur whom he affectionately called ?Ma? and ?Pa? (?Maw & Paw,? ?Mom & Pop?). He sent Christmas cards and letters to them on a regular basis from 1938 until 1948 when Pete died, continuing to correspond with Hup until she died in 1995 at 101. In full, ?Dear Hup Here is that ?wee note? you mentioned and thanks for word about Myrtle. It?s hard to reconcile his message with the Myrtle you & I remember. I tried to call her but the number I have is no longer her?s and the lady who answered said she had calls from others trying to reach Myrtle. I?m combing the files here to see if I have her address or number but I?m afraid I?m not going to be successful. I had hoped to talk to her or at least write but I don?t have number or address. ?I?m so glad to hear how well you are feeling. I am too. It looks like we must have lived right. But then we could have some one up there looking after us. ?Nancy and I are off to Japan in a few days. Believe it or not they?ve hired me to make some speeches. Well we?ll be there 10 days and be back here before the end of the month. Nancy sends her love & so do I. Forgive my writing ?" I?m doing this is a car. Love Dutch.? Myrtle was one of Hup?s friends who knew Dutch when he worked at her husband?s station, WOC Davenport."

Manuscript Book of Hours on vellum. In Latin.

Geneva, ca. 1500. 8vo. Bound in mid 19th century full morocco binding with richly gilt spine, gilt frames to boards, and all edges of boards gilt. Boards covered by elaborately decorated metal on-lays with enamel corner pieces. Binding measuring 13x9 cm. 19th century book plate to inside of front board (James, Earl of Southeck). Contemporary manuscript annotations to bottom of last text leaf (both recto and verso) and to last otherwise blank leaf. 2 lines of annotations to first leaf of the calendar (February).Leaves measuring 12,5x8,3 cm. Calendar with illuminated initials, gilt in red and blue. Some of the intials here worn. Very neat Gothic script throughout, in black (and red) ink. Many large red and blue initials throughout, and numerous 2-line gilt initials, decorated, in red and blue. 16 lines to a page. 147 leaves. Lacking the first leaf of the calendar, but otherwise the entire text is complete. There has presumably been a leaf with a miniature bound in before every major opening - these have then been removed, but no text is missing.. An excellent, exquisite, and very interesting Book of Hours in a magnificent metal binding. The manuscript is for lithurgical use of Geneva and has possibly been copied from a printed work. James Carnegie, 9th Earl of Southesk (1827 - 1905), known as Sir James Carnegie of Kinnaird and of Pitcarrow, Bt and de jure Earl of Southesk from 1849 to 1855, was a Scottish nobleman.Born in Edinburgh, Southesk was the son of Sir James Carnegie, 5th Baronet and Charlotte Lysons. On his father's side he descended from David Carnegie, son of Hon. Alexander Carnegie, fourth son of David Carnegie, 1st Earl of Southesk. The fifth earl was involved in the Jacobite rising of 1715 and was attainted, with his titles and estates forfeited. However, in 1855 Sir James Carnegie obtained a reversal of his kinsman's attainder by Act of Parliament and became the ninth Earl of Southesk. The magnificent metal binding on this exquisite manuscript is from this period, ca. 1855. Lord Southesk served as Lord Lieutenant of Kincardineshire from 1849 to 1856. In 1869 he was made a Knight of the Thistle and created Baron Balinhard, of Farnell in the County of Forfar, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. This title gave him and the later earls an automatic seat in the House of Lords. James, Earl of Southesk was the author of several books of poetry

Alden & Landis 730/211; Borba de Moraes, p. 678; Rodriques 2112; Sabin 72300; cf. Boxer, The Golden Age of Brazil, p. 160. First edition of the first general history of Brazil, covering the period 1500 to 1724. Though Robert Southey in the widely quoted preface to his History of Brazil dismissed the work as meagre and inaccurate, "the Historia does not deserve this censure. For all its Gongoric turgidity, it contains some valuable and authentic information, being on some points more fair-minded and accurate than Southey's better written but more prejudiced work" (Boxer). Sebastião Rocha Pita (1660-1738) was a Brazilian historian and member of the Royal Academy of Portuguese History. He based his history on Jesuit chronicles and a variety of other sources, and included noteworthy information on Brazil's foundation and its successive governors. He also includes several references to gold, silver and salpeter mines, and a short note on pirates.         USE OF PARIS

Northern France, probably Paris, ca, 1500. n. Hardcover. A Complete Book of Hours Associated with Jean Pichore,With 13 Large and 39 Small Miniatures. 184 x 127 mm (7 1/4 x 5"). 129 leaves, COMPLETE, written out in a very clean, rounded book hand (combining elements of the gothic and bâtarde). In an appealing period French calf binding with very elaborate strapwork designs on both covers (rebacked in the 20th century using original portions of the spine, new endpapers). With 24 small double calendar miniatures (the labor of the month and zodiac sign for each month within separate gilt borders but tangent to each other on the recto of each calendar leaf), 15 additional small miniatures showing the Virgin and Child, the Evangelists in the Gospel lessons, and then various saints in the Suffrages, and 13 FULL-PAGE ARCH-TOPPED MINIATURES accompanied by particularly lavish full borders of brushed gold and much acanthus and floral decoration. The gilt on the binding slightly rubbed or dulled, isolated trivial soiling, smudges, or other blemishes internally, but IN REMARKABLY FINE CONDITION, the paint and glittering gold virtually as they were at the time the manuscript was produced, and with consistently comfortable margins. In a very appealing contemporary binding and exceptionally well preserved, this is an excellent example of a complete mainstream Parisian Book of Hours produced by a highly skilled workshop at around the close of the first decade of the 16th century. While much remains unknown about Parisian manuscript production during this period, it seems likely that multiple illuminators would have worked on a book like this. And here the large miniatures seem to have been painted by at least two, and perhaps three, artists; the first two and maybe the final one are close to the style associated with Jean Pichore, whose recognizable artistic elements include small heads but rather big hands, little downward turned eyes, and soft colors with rather good zig-zagging gold highlights in the drapery. Known to have been working in Paris from at least 1502-20, Pichore was a major figure among illuminators of the period, though his name evokes a style as much as a person. The other miniatures here could well have been executed by members of Pichore's workshop. (Pichore also co-published printed Books of Hours with Rémy de Laistre, and presumably designed their woodcuts.) The contents are as follows: 1-12v Calendar; 13r-17r Gospel Lessons (with a full-page miniature of John on Patmos on 13r); 17v-20r Obsecro Te; 20v-22r Intemerata (22v blank except for rubric at bottom); 23r-71v Hours of the Virgin, with a full-page miniature of the Annunciation (for Matins) on 23r, of the Visitation (for Lauds) on 41r, of the Nativity (for Prime) on 49v, of the Shepherds (for Terce) on 54r, of the Magi (for Sext) on 57r, of the Presentation in the Temple (for None) on 60r, of the Flight into Egypt (for Vespers) on 63r, and of the Coronation of the Virgin (for Compline) on 68r; 72r-74v Hours of the Cross (with a full-page miniature of the Crucifixion on 72r); 75r-77v Hours of the Holy Spirit (with a full-page miniature of Pentecost on 75r); 78r-91v Penitential Psalms and Litany (with a full-page miniature of David praying on 78r); 92r-123v Hours of the Dead (with a full-page miniature of Death with a spear on 92r); 124r-129v Suffrages (with small miniatures of the Trinity, Saint Michael, John the Baptist, John the Evangelist, Peter and Paul, Saint Nicolas, Saint Anne, Mary Magdalene, Saint Katherine, and Saint Margaret). Although there is anecdotal evidence that our manuscript once was in the eminent collection of Martin Schøyen, we have been able to find no definitive record of an appearance of it in the marketplace. Whatever is to be said about where and by whom the manuscript was produced and owned, it is remarkable in its flawless condition, huge margins, and bright, crisp illumination.

      c. 1300-1500. Art. Painting size: 14" x 14"; Frame size: 21" x 21"; This painting has cracklature, please see images. There are no holes, tears, or other damage to the canvas or painting and is in very good condition for its age. It is in a modern frame. This painting had been a larger painting originally. The actual painting wraps around the top and bottom of the stretcher and the top and bottom of the painting were trimmed off at the edge of the back of the stretcher. On each side of the stretcher, a piece of early 20th century canvas has been professionally added to each side to allow enough canvas to secure to the sides of the stretcher without cutting off more of the painting. By looking at the back side of the painting and carefully pushing the canvas away from the stretcher, one can see the added piece of canvas which was added in the 20th century. Because the top and bottom of the painting had been cut off, and because this is clearly a professional restretching and mounting to a later stretcher, the painting presumably had damage and was trimmed to make it a displayable painting. Close up photos of what I have described are available upon request. .

Tempus Libri. New;. Hardcover. <p>A priceless manuscript from the Early Middle Ages, it dates back to around 860 in Tours (France). It is written in Latin. It contains 222 folios (444 pages) measuring 270x168 mm. The evangeliary is written in uncial script (Latin alphabet of capital letters) with the headings written in Roman capitals. Rubrication is used in the manuscript, and it contains some marginalia. Parts of the text, some of the headings, and the illuminations are decorated with gold. </p><p>It contains four figural illuminations of the evangelists St. Matthew (with the symbol of an angel) , St. Mark (with the symbol of a lion) , St. Luke (with the symbol of an ox) , and St. John the Evangelist (with the symbol of an eagle). As for the style, it is a pure example of the Ottonian style, the pictures of the evangelists are an early work of the most famous Ottonian painter, Master of the Registrum Gregorii. Originally, these were presumably separate leaves, bound into an older codex later. The quality of the painting is exceptional, the rendering highly sophisticated. Purple background is often used in the text, painted over with vermilion. Inscriptions in gold are written over such background. At some places, green background is also used, besides the purple. </p><p>The covers and binding of the manuscript are supposedly of Czech origin, from around 1500. The front is covered in red velvet, and richly decorated. There are four dominant gilded figures in high relief. A silver figure of the Crucifixion is positioned in the centre, with the Virgin Mary and St. John the Evangelist, and two saint bishops on the sides. Furthermore, there are four silver medallions of the Evangelists. The top and the bottom of the cover are decorated with Romanesque enamel discs. Between them, there is a figure of Christ Benedictory on the throne at the top, and the Madonna and Child at the bottom. The composition is completed with cut crystals and semi-precious stones. The binding is protected with decorated silver book corners (on both the front and back covers) , the body with gilded gauffered edges is clasped with two decorated clasps. </p><p>The manuscript originated sometime around 860 in the scriptorium of Tours. Later it passed into the ownership of the Church of St. Martin in Trier where paintings were added. The evidence of the manuscript&#146;s presence in Trier can be found, for instance, in the entry from 1097 describing the consecration of the altars in the Church of St. Martin in Trier with the names of the Trier bishops. </p><p>The original manuscript is kept at the library of the Royal Canonry of Premonstratensians at Strahov in Prague under the book number DF III 3. The Tempus Libri company has obtained the exclusive rights to facsimile the manuscript. The facsimile of the Strahov Evangeliary will be published in a limited edition of 199 copies. </p> .

        DS ("Henry").

Tournehem (Pas-de-Calais), 20. II. 1500. - Oblong 8vo (106 x 162 mm). 1 p., address panel to verso. In French, to the Knights of the Golden Fleece. In 1499 Henry&#146;s uncle, count Engelbert II, invited him to the Burgundian Netherlands as his heir. On the death of his uncle in 1504, Henry inherited the Nassau possessions in the Netherlands, including the wealthy lordship of Breda in the duchy of Brabant. He was an important confidant of the young Emperor Charles V, serving as his chamberlain and as ambassador to Francis I. In this short letter Henry acknowledges receipt of a letter from the Knights of the Toison d&#146;Or, via Maistre Laurent du Blioul ("greffier" or registrar of the order), to whom he has rendered a report and he declares himself at their service. The address panel gives "Les ch[eva]l[ie]rs confreres de lordre de la thoison dor." The Order of the Golden Fleece had been founded in 1430 by Philip III, Duke of Burgundy to celebrate his marriage to the Portuguese princess Infanta Isabella of Portugal, daughter of King John I of Portugal. It became one of the most powerful European chivalric orders and exists to this day. Henry of Nassau was elected to the Order in 1505. - Old dampstaining, slight fraying at right-hand margin, just touching one letter, left-hand margin cut close, just affecting flourish of initial "T" and one other letter, neat paper repair/reinforcement to all margins at verso. - Provenance: Charavay, Paris.

Gilles Hardouin, Paris 1500 - 222 x 140 mm (8 3/4 x 5 1/2"). Single column, 30 lines of text, gothic typeface. Attractively matted. Verso with elaborate metalcut compartmentalized border featuring mischievous putti and grotesques, the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, and a woman shearing a sheep; the same side with 18 one-line hand-painted initials in gold on a blue or red ground, two similar two-line initials, and one three-line foliated initial in gold on a red ground; recto WITH A RICHLY PAINTED AND ILLUMINATED WOODCUT OF THE MASSACRE OF THE INNOCENTS, with a glimpse of the flight into Egypt on the left side of the scene. A touch of wrinkling to lower outer corner, verso with remnants of mounting tape, otherwise A VERY FINE LEAF, the printing clear and fresh, the colors vivid, and the gold lustrous. The massacre depicted here appears to be taking place in Herod's throne room, as if he had ordered it for his own entertainment. Seated in the center of the piece on a massive gold throne, he views the heartbreaking chaos before him impassively, ignoring an angry women who is lifting her bleeding infant up to him as if to say, "See what you've done!" The mothers here are not wailing in grief, but are angrily fighting for their sons' lives. In the foreground, a soldier pushes a golden-haired woman out of the way, in order to finish off the dazed and wounded infant she and her companion are attempting to shield. On either side, soldiers have raised swords to smite the helpless tots, and to the right of Herod, a bleeding infant looks pitifully up at the armored solder who holds him by the arm, ready to deliver the fatal blow. In the upper right, we see a baby impaled on a spear. A glimpse of hope through an open window mitigates the horror of the gruesome scene: we see Joseph leading a donkey bearing the Virgin and the Christ Child as they flee to Egypt, blessed by golden rays streaming down from heaven. The action here is dramatic, intense, and memorable; the colors are vivid, the heavy use of gold adding light to an overwhelmingly sober subject. The Book of Hours from which this leaf came must have been extraordinarily sumptuous.
