1500. Condition: Collectible, Very Good. 4 3/4" x 7" approximately. We consulted several experts in the US and Italy. The consensus is it's not 16th Century but most likely 17th Century. No one has seen this particular image. A durer expert thinkgs it's after Durer no monogram present, possibly from a Spanish print maker. Another expert considers it might be from Eastern Europe in the Byzantine tradition. Another suggests it was printed in Naples by a Greek print-maker. Here's how we found this particular print: We bought a collection of books and papers from the 16th to the 20th Century. We found this print and 2 documents on vellum dated in the 1500s laid in a mid-16th Century book. Doesn't date the print from that century as it certainly could just be coincidental. Slight tear else small ink stain, few very minor creases at tips. A lovely example of a breastfeeding Madonna print. *.

COUNCIL OF CONSTANCE. XI.1414-IV.1418
Hagenau: Heinrich Gran for Jakob Rynman, 1500. 17TH-CENTURY GILT-RULED RED MOROCCO WITH THE ARMS OF JEAN-BAPTISTE COLBERT, his gilt cipher in five spine compartments and the gilt-lettered title in the sixth, edges sprinkled red and blue. First Edition. Between November 1414 and April 1418, the Council of Constance deposed three popes, elected one, ended the Western Schism, reformed ecclesiastical government and life, ruled on just war, streamlined the curia and condemned Wycliffe and Hus. Most importantly, it confirmed THE CHURCH COUNCIL'S SUPREME AND INDEPENDENT AUTHORITY AS SUPERIOR TO THE POPE'S in matters of faith, unity and reform. Stump considered this "revolutionary...the precursor of the principles of modern constitutional monarchy". "From an ecclesiastical point of view, the Council of Constance may truly be said to close the medieval and to open the modern period" (Catholic Encyclopedia IV: 292).  This copy was bound for the Prime Minister of France, J.-B. Colbert (1619-83). It passed to one son then the other, then to his nephew (Bibliotheca colbertina (1728) 5495); printed ticket of London bookseller C.J. Stewart (fl. 1837-82); bookplate of Berlin collector Wilhelm Richter from whom Rosenbach bought it; bookplates, stamp and manuscript note of Albert Ehrman (Broxbourne Library (1977) 199). Large and crisp, in fine condition, two outer margins uncut. ¶Stump, The Reforms of the Council of Constance passim; ISTC ic00800000; Goff C-800.

CELLINI, Benvenuto.
1500. Quarto (267 x 189 mm.), [4] leaves, 318 pages,[4] leaves; title-page printed in black and red.A very fine copy in contemporary stiff vellum, red morocco lettering piece on spine. The first Italian edition of the fascinating autobiography of a most renowned artiste maudit. The Florentine Benvenuto Cellini (1500-71) was among the most important Mannerist artists ? a skilled goldsmith, sculptor, musician and author. He worked in Rome, Florence, Mantua Naples, Venice and Paris, producing medals, medallions, statues, decorative silver and gold objects (e.g., caskets, cups and candlesticks) for princes and the nobility. He famously spent his life amidst intrigues, imprisonments (with a murder attempt), flights, battles and several charges of sodomy. This is arguably why his autobiography, composed between 1558 and 1562, continued to circulate in manuscript form for nearly 150 years, before finally reaching the press in 1728.This first edition sealed his European fame as an autobiographer and talented author. It features a dedication and preface by the Italian physician and naturalist Antonio Cocchi (1695-1758), and was mentioned as a notable work for the Italian language in the Vocabolario degli Accademici della Crusca of 1741. ?A highly impassioned, albeit embellished, account of Cellini's life as artist and adventurer, it gained attention during the romantic period and later served as a model for 19th-century historical novelists like Sir Walter Scott and Alexandre Dumas. [?] it is remarkable for its enduring power to capture the imagination of modern readers, as it present … [Click Below for Full Description]

A vast collection of 1500 invitations to art exhibits, artist talks and receptions that span seven decades, from both Soviet and world renowned artists. This unique volume also features program notes, speakers, posters, and promotional objects all rarely available on the market. Most of the cards were invitations for an exhibition preview before it opened to the public. This collection gathers a sample of innovative printed invitations, small posters, flyers and autographs from the early 1920s to late 1980s, most of which include famous art work of each artist. The selection traces ways in which artists, designers, poets and museums/galleries have used invitation cards and other printed announcements as a part of the staging of conceptual works, installations, performances, and other time-based events and screenings. This diverse grouping of ephemera explores the various, surprising ways that we have been invited to experience art This lot comes from the collection of Viktor Kholodkov (1948-2015), "who fulfilled his passion for books, avant-garde design and paper memorabilia by devoting his life to collecting and dealing of prominent works of Russian graphic art of the first half of the 20th century. , . . Rare Gospels and Acts of the Apostles in the Hindustani (Urdu) language, in the Arabic script, printed by and for the Protestant Bible and missionary societies for free distribution in southern India. While India probably had more than 100,000 Urdu speakers at this date, few could read, so the book was published in an edition of 1500 copies (the edition size, with the year 1849, is printed at the foot of the first page of the main text). With a bookplate of the Library of the American Bible Union and the embossed stamp of the University of Chicago Library on the title-page. Very slightly browned, but in very good condition. A rare Urdu missionary Bible text, in Arabic type.WorldCat (1 copy)..
