[2], 221, [9] ll.Rare second Dutch edition of the first biography of the Emperor Charles V (1500-1558), originally published in Italian in Venice, 1560. The first Dutch edition was published at Antwerp in 1570. The present second Dutch edition of 1610 appeared in three issues: the present Amsterdam issue, another in Delft and a third in Dordrecht (this last by the printer Canin, supposedly differing slightly). Besides being an authoritative biography of an immensely important figure in European history that was first published shortly after his death, this publication includes a focus on the colonial endeavours in his time. Especially the Spanish conquests in South America are discussed in length, including Mexico and Peru. Alfonso de Ulloa (1529-1570) was a prolific translator of Spanish works into Italian who worked in Venice. His biography of Emperor Charles V can be placed in the context of Spanish Catholic propaganda against the rising Protestant and Muslim influences, which explains the extraordinary attention to the glorious Spanish exploration and colonial conquests. The plates were first used in this second Dutch edition and include portraits of: Philip I of Castile, King Ferdinand V of Castile and León, Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, Turkish Emperor Suleiman the Magnificent and many more. The plates were used again for a later publication by Nicolaes de Clerck: Tooneel der keyseren, Delft 1615.In very good condition.l STCN (4 copies); Cat. NHSM I, p.565; Sabin 97678; for the author: Bellomi, Paola, "Alfonso de Ulloa", in: David Thomas, ed., Christian-Muslim relat … [Click Below for Full Description]

ANDRADE, Jacinto Freire de.
[8], 341, [1 blank], [2] pp.Important biography of the Portuguese nobleman and fourth viceroy of Portuguese India D. João de Castro (1500-1548), written by the Portuguese Catholic priest and historian Jacinto Freire de Andrade (1597-1657). The work was first published in Lisbon in 1651 and was the first biography in the Portuguese language. "Cette biographie est un des livres classiques de la langue portugaise" (Brunet)De Castro fought the Ottoman Empire at the Siege of Tunis (1535), where he refused knighthood offered by emperor Charles V. A few years later, probably around 1538, he left for India where he settled at Goa. He joined Estêvão de Gama (son of Vasco da Gama) on an expedition to Suez and played a major role in the defeat of the Gujarat Sultanate during their siege of Diu in 1546. In 1547 he was appointed viceroy of Portuguese India by the Portuguese King John III. The work also includes accounts of the battles between the Arabs and the Turks at Ormuz.Impressum partly illegible, possibly because of a library stamp removal, occasionally some minor foxing. Overall in good condition, wholly untrimmed, with most of the bolts unopened.l Porbase (4 copies); WorldCat (8 other copies); cf. Brunet I, 263 (first edition).

SCHENCK DE TAUTENBURCH, Fredericus.
[48]; 72; [52]; [27], [1 blank] ll.Four rare post-incunables clearly bound together with the intention to form a collection of texts in defence of the Catholic faith and its liturgy against Lutheranism and to serve as an example for good and just behaviour for priests to purify the widely corrupted practice. All treatises are the only editions published in the Low Counries in the period 1500-1540, all printed in Antwerp by the most important printers/publishers active there: Michiel Hillen van Hoochstraten and Johannes Steelsius. The present copy of the treatise by Schenck van Tautenburch even is the second copy recorded of the only known edition. With a few pages with some slight foxing. MESUE the younger (MASAWAIH AL-MARDINI).
[34] ll.Rare and almost unobtainable first edition of a digest of medical prescriptions, taken from the works of the highly-regarded Arabic physician Mesue the younger (also known as Masawaih al-Mardini), including "a kind of general manual for apothecaries and perfumers" (Duveen). All recipes are in Italian, while the main title and the headings are in Latin. The literature records only two copies world-wide, at the British Library and the University of Wisconsin, the later formerly the Duveen's. [MANUSCRIPT - NOTARIAL DECLARATION]. AFFAITATI, Giovan Carlo (Johannes Carolus de AFFAYTADI).
[1] leaf.An Antwerp notarial declaration made voluntarily by Giovan Carlo Affaitati, also known as Johannes Carolus de Affaytadi (Cremona 1500 or 1510-Lier 1555 or Ghistelle 1587) soon after he moved to Antwerp, on behalf of Guido de Crema, citizen of Mantua, and Raphael Brumani, citizen of Cremona. It was drawn up before the Antwerp notary Anthony Amala and three named witnesses and appears to concern De Crema and Brumani's inheritance. Affaitati testified to the content of a document drawn up on 31 December 1545 before the Mantua notary Hieronimus de Zizolis. Affitati came from a merchant banking family in Cremona. He set up in Lisbon but moved to Antwerp in 1545, when the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V made him Baron of Ghistelle. He was active in the spice trade and is said to have been the most important financier of the wars of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and King Philip II of Spain.Formerly folded to a smaller size, leaving traces of the old folds, but still in very good condition. A primary document recording Charles V's financier in Antwerp, only months after he moved there.l For Affaitati: Kellenbenz, “Die Konkurrenten der Fugger als bankiers der Spanischen Krone”, in: Zeitsch. Robert Galbraith / J.K. Rowling
1500. Apologies, I have been having issues with eBay and uploading images. - photos to follow shortly. On offer are signed first editions of the first two books in the Strike series of books by Robert Galbraith aka JK Rowling. Signed copies of The Cuckoo's Calling are particularly scarce - it was first printed with Rowling's identity a secret and had a very small print run (certainly by Rowling's standards) of 1500 copies, of which 150 are understood to have been signed. Those copies usually start at about £3000 and are understandably out of the reach of most buyers, so early reprints (which are in themselves very rare) are a relatively affordable alternative. The other major disadvantage buying one of the original prints is that they come with no official verification. This is not at all to suggest that other sellers are in any way pulling a scam as due to Rowling's identity being secret, the books originally came with no verification, but it does mean that there is no provenance other than a possibly a receipt. Both of the books listed come with J K Rowling's hologram sticker of authentication, which is the only formally recognized proof of a genuine signature. The Cuckoo's Calling - Sphere, UK, 2013. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Signed. Robert Galbraith, (J K Rowling) The Cuckoo's Calling signed UK First Edition, Second Reprint. This second reprint was still within the first month of production. The book is unread, the wrapper has slight handling marks from the signing. Includes the official hologram of J K ROWLING, fixed to the page opposite t … [Click Below for Full Description]

1500. Prompt shipment, with tracking.4 3/4" x 7" approximately. We consulted several experts in the US and Italy. The consensus is it's not 16th Century but most likely 17th Century. No one has seen this particular image. A durer expert thinkgs it's after Durer no monogram present, possibly from a Spanish print maker. Another expert considers it might be from Eastern Europe in the Byzantine tradition. Another suggests it was printed in Naples by a Greek print-maker. Here's how we found this particular print: We bought a collection of books and papers from the 16th to the 20th Century. We found this print and 2 documents on vellum dated in the 1500s laid in a mid-16th Century book. Doesn't date the print from that century as it certainly could just be coincidental. Slight tear else small ink stain, few very minor creases at tips. A lovely example of a breastfeeding Madonna print. *

PRINT - WARSHIP]. PAYNE, John.
1500. Rare and magnificent engraving of the extraordinary 17th-century English warship the Sovereign of the Seas, shown in full sail, flying 5 flags and more than a dozen pennons. With her more than 1500 tons and more than 100 guns, she surpassed all her contemporaries in size and gun power and cost about ten times as much as an average naval gunship. Besides being "one of the best known naval prints belonging to the seventeenth century extraordinarily rich of detail and of the greatest possible interest" (Chatterton), it is also by far the largest English engraved view to survive from the first half of the century. For the engraving, Payne had, most likely, access to the builder's draughts and plans and must have collaborated with Peter Pett for the engraving to be as representative of the ship as possible.Trimmed to the printed image at the two sides, not always completely straight, a few small tears (mostly repaired) at the head and foot, a few tiny spots and a tiny blemish, but still generally good, very attractive and printed in a crisp impression.l BM online cat. 1854,0614.252; H. Busmann, Sovereign of the Seas (2002), pp. 39-46 (locates 7 copies); Chatterton, Chats on naval prints, pp. 56-57.

Stephen King
Mint condition; signed by Stephen King and artist Michael Whelan; Limited edition to 1500 copies, this is # 1343. The Dark Tower VII Signed Limited Edition This is a mint condition slipcased Grant 2 volume hardbacks of The Dark Tower (Dark Tower VII) signed by Stephen King & Michael Whelan. The tale of Roland Deschain's relentless quest for the Dark Tower has, the author fears, sorely tried the patience of those who have followed it from its earliest chapters. But attend to it a while longer, if it pleases you, for this volume is the last, and often the last things are best. Roland's ka-tet remains intact, though scattered over wheres and whens. Susannah-Mia has been carried from the Dixie Pig (in the summer of 1999) to a birthing room (really a chamber of horrors) in Thunderclap's Fedic Station; Jake and Father Callahan, with Oy between them, have entered the restaurant on Lex and 61st with weapons drawn, little knowing how numerous and noxious are their foes. Roland and Eddie are with John Cullum in Maine, in 1977, looking for the site on Turtleback Lane where "walk-ins" have been often seen. They want desperately to get back to the others, to Susannah especially, and yet they have come to realize that the world they need to escape is the only one that matters. The first Latin translations of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, the Ethica vetus and the Ethica nova, are the object of six commentaries from the first half of the thirteenth century, presumably written by Parisian arts masters. Typical for these early commentaries is the interpretation of Aristotle's doctrine in the light of Christian religion. In 1246/1248, Robert Grosseteste achieved a complete translation of the Nicomachean Ethics. The first to write commentaries on it were Albert the Great (twice) and Thomas Aquinas. JOHANNES de SACRO BOSCO. (c. 1195 - c. 1256)
Venice [Jacobus Pentius, de Leuco] for Georgius de Monteferrato 1500, die 28 ianuarii. Quarto. 26 lvs, A-E4 F6 . There is a large woodcut on title page 'sphera mundi', see to the left and three other large woodcut diagrams in text. Woodcut capitals, also spaces with guide-letters. Tear repaired in corner of f. 2, with some text loss. This illustrated incunable is printed by Jacobus Pentius, de Leuce who started printing in 1495, his press was chiefly active after the turn of the century. In 1220 Sacrobosco wrote Tractatus de Sphaera a book on astronomy in four chapters. The first chapter deals with the shape and place of the Earth within a spherical universe. The second chapter deals with various circles on the sky. The third chapter describes rising and setting of heavenly bodies from different geographical locations while the fourth chapter gives a brief introduction to Ptolemy's theory of the planets and of eclipses. This book, which predates Grosseteste's astronomy book, is well written and was widely used throughout Europe. Goff J421; Klebs, A.C. 1500. Condition: Collectible, Very Good. 4 3/4" x 7" approximately. *.
