Nuremberg. Anton Koberger for Sebald Schreyer and Sebastian Kammermeister, 1493. The Nuremberg Chronicle. Folio. Size of binding: 12 in. x 17 ¼ in. (30.48 cm x 43.8 cm); Size of pages: 11 7/8 in. x 16 9/16 in. (30.16 cm. x. 42.06 cm.) [20 ff.] 300 ff. (last one unnumbered); 6 ff. numbered by hand in pencil. The six folios following the 300 are unnumbered, and consist of one blank folio and five folios with the printed Supplement. This is a tall copy with wide margins on all edges. First Latin edition with two contradictory colophons, the second of which gives the date of July 12, 1493 as the date of completion. This copy begins with an index (table) of 19 leaves, preceded by an impressively lettered title page printed by xylography. The book contains 1809 picture-prints (645 individual woodcuts and 1164 repetitions). There are 26 double-page engravings of views of cities; some of these were apparently based upon sketches made on the spot. Sixty-nine other views of cities are based upon 22 woodcuts. Prints of individuals number 598, based on 96 different woodcuts. (This copy includes, unmarked, the famous portrait of "Pope Joan," which was removed from or defaced in many copies. It appears on the verso of leaf CLXIX [169]). There is no indication on individual prints identifying the artists, but Michael Wolgemut, the well-known teacher of Albrecht Durer, and his stepson, Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, are mentioned in the second colophon (folio CCC). A map of Europe and a map of the World are included. There are two colophons; the first, at folio 266, does not name the printer; it gi … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCHEDEL, HARTMANN - WOLGEMUT, MICHAEL - ANTON KOBERGER.
Norimberga, 1493. [Click Below for Full Description]

Books bound in half brown morocco and marbled boards (Author's Autograph Edition, No. 404 of 500 sets). Spines slightly toned. Pen and ink on paper, 22 lines. 1 vols. 12mo; books 8vo. 'two aspiring demagogues, ambitious of the command of a petty fortress'. Manuscript leaf from the The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus, the passage in chapter XVIII describing the fate of the Fortress of La Navidad (1493). The section begins: "Such is the story of the first European establishment in the New World. It presents in a diminutive compass an epitome of the gross vices which degrade civilization, and the grand political errors which sometimes subvert the mightiest empires. All law and order were relaxed by licentiousness; public good was sacrificed to private interest and passion; the community was convulsed by divers factions …" The present manuscript (numbered 21?) continues Irving's indictment of those left in charge of the settlement: "until the whole body politic was shaken asunder by two aspiring demagogues, ambitious of the command of a petty fortress in a wilderness, and the supreme control of eight and thirty men. "This account of the catastrophe of the fortress satisfied Columbus of the good faith of Guacanagari; but circumstances concurred to keep alive the suspicions entertained of him by the Spaniards. Columbus paid a visit to the chieftain, … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCHEDEL, Hartmann
Anton Koberger for Sebald Schreyer and Sebastian Kammermeister, Nuremberg. Title: "De regno polonie et eius initio." This is an original uncolored woodcut depicting the Kingdom of Poland from the Latin issue of Liber Chronicarum (or Nuremberg Chronicle) by Hartman Schedel (1440-1514). Maybe the earliest printed map of Poland. "De regno polonie et eius initio" made with great fantasy. Showing townviews, waterways, buildings, ships etc. This chronicle was the most extensively illustrated book of the 15th century and a milestone in printing history. It contained hundreds of illustrations, ranging from portraits and Biblical scenes to human monstrosities. But it is for the town views, often the earliest views of the cities depicted, that the Chronicle is best known today. Just a couple of small marginal stains; some red underlining; margins and edges very nice. Overall, very good. Size: (HxW) (including margins): 15.5 x 10.8 inches / 40 x 27 cm Aritists: Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff Source: SCHEDEL, Hartmann. Liber Chronicarum.
