Institoris, Heinrich.
[Speyer, Peter Drach, before April 1487]. Folio (215 x 294 mm). 129 ff. (wants final blank). 48 lines, double-columned, gothic type. Rubricated, with lombardic initials in red and blue, occasional pen flourishes, paragraph marks at beginning of chapter headings, some capital strokes. 19th-c. white paper boards with printed paper spine label. Stored in custom-made full green morocco gilt clamshell box. First edition of the notorious "Hammer of Witches", which laid down procedures for finding out and convicting witches. Due to the innovation of the printing press, it contributed significantly to the early modern witch craze. "The most important and most sinister work on demonology ever written. It crystallized into a fiercely stringent code previous folklore about black magic with church dogma on heresy, and, if any one work could, opened the floodgates of the inquisitorial hysteria [. it was] the source, inspiration, and quarry for all subsequent treatises on witchcraft" (Robbins, Encyclopaedia of Witchcraft and Demonology). The book was published and republished in at least 13 editions up to 1520, then revived from the late 16th century, undergoing at least 16 editions between 1574 and 1669, as well as numerous editons in German, French and English. Complete copies of the first edition are rare, and only a few copies are found in American institutions. - Upper cover stained and soiled, first three pages of text with some soiling and staining, neat repair to final printed leaf. All in all, a remarkably fine, clean copy from the famous Donaueschingen library of the princes of … [Click Below for Full Description]

SACK, Baron Albert von.
Cat. NHSM, p. 283; Muller, America 1487; Tiele, Bibl. 953; Sabin 74751. First and only Dutch edition of the account of Sebastian Albert Freiherr von Sack's travels in Surinam. Count von Sack was a royal chamberlain, a knight of St. John, with an inquisitive mind and a great fondness for travelling. He made his first journey to Surinam in 1805, from where he travelled to North-America in 1807, calling at Providence, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington DC and Alexandria. He returned to Germany via New York and Lisbon and sojourned in Surinam a second time between 1810-1812. The account, written in the form of letters, contains detailed descriptions of the climate, topography and geography of Surinam, its inhabitants (including the Indians and 'bosnegers), the slave trade and the foreign trade. The first edition, comprising only the Baron's first voyage, appeared in English in 1810. The present Dutch edition was translated from the enlarged German edition and contains an appendix by A.J. Buirma with annotations on Von Sack's travels. Joints cracked. A good copy.

TACITUS, Publius Cornelius
188 leaves (incl. the three blanks). 37 lines, two- to six-line initials supplied in red or blue, manuscript guide letters. Small folio (297 x 205 mm.), cont. blind-stamped Italian goatskin over wooden boards, 7 (of 10) bosses, 2 clasps (see below), vellum endleaves. [Milan: Antonius Zarotus, ca. 1487]. Second edition of the extant works of "the outstanding historian and principal prose writer of the Silver Age of Latin letters" (Printing & the Mind of Man). This edition of Tacitus's extant works was the first to be edited by Franciscus Puteolanus, with a prefatory letter stating that the text was prepared for printing by himself and Bernardinus Lanterius. The book contains Annales XI-XVI, Historiae, Germania, Dialogus de oratoribus and the first edition of the biography of Tacitus's father-in-law, Agricola, the great Roman general, under whose leadership the Roman conquest of Britain was completed. The Julii Agricolae vita therefore contains an important early historical description of Roman Britain. Vecellio Fore-edge Painting: The fore-edge shows a figure of the bearded author seated at a desk writing, blue and pink background above and green below. The abbreviated author's name is lettered horizontally COR/T below the lower clasp. Upper and lower edges are marbled in orange-red. The painted decoration is the work of Cesare Vecellio (1521-1601), a cousin and pupil of Titian, in whose studio Vecellio worked until Titian's death. Among Vecellio's major paintings is the altarpiece at Belluno Cathedral. In addition to the painted fore-edges executed for the Pillones, Vecelli … [Click Below for Full Description]
