With 7 numbered engraved plates (3 folding) and a smaller unnumbered engraving bound with text. Ornamental head and tail-pieces. Vellum. "One of the most important early works on electricity, containing a description of the electrical machine with a glass cylinder (invented by Hauksbee), descriptions and illustrations of an improved air-pump of his invention, founded on his discovery of the lateral communication of motion in air and important for first showing the optical effects produced by the passage of electricity through rarefied air, which formed the starting point of modern researches, X-rays and the constitution of the atom ." (Duveen). The original English edition was published in 1709; this Italian translation is the first to be published on the Continent of Europe, the French version appearing only in 1754. The famous plates are well engraved - see the 3 reproductions in Dibner (I) Early Electrical Machines, pp16-19.Collation: *8 A-K8 [L]. This edition, the second published after that of London in 1709. was "the version chiefly read in France [and] used by the pioneer electrician C. F. de Cisternay Dufay" [Dictionary of Scientific Biography]. Hauksbee (c. 1660 - 1713),natural philosopher and scientist, was best known for his work on electricity. A few isolated wormholes and signs of usage, otherwise a good copy with wide margins.
