Palmerino d'Oliva. Historia del Valorosissimo - ANON - 1547.
Small 8vo, A-Z8, AA-RR8, , 320 leaves, italic letter, small historiated metal-cut initials, slight browning to title-page and first gathering, clean tear to G2 without loss, old vellum, sound. Engraved armorial book-plate "Bibliotheque du Chateau de Tanqueux" on front pastedown, inscription "1742 di Giaco Soranzo"(probably a descendant of Jacopo Soranzo, the 16c. Venetian procurator painted by Tintoretto) on front fly, signature of "Herbert M Evans" on front fly, "D'arblay" on front fly verso. This is the second edition of a very rare book, first published in 1544. COPAC locates only the BL copy in the UK; the World Catalogue adds two copies in France, Bibliotheque Mazarine and Bibliotheque Sainte-Genevieve, and only one copy of the 1544 edition (BL), the earliest in Italy is a 1558 edition at Bologna and in the USA a 1552 edition at the Huntington Library. The original Spanish text was first published in Salamanca in 1511 and is sometimes attributed to Francisco Vazquez; this translation into Italian is attributed to Mambrino Roseo.
