No date: Penzer's 1923 "Annotated Bibliography." gives 1903 as the probable year that the "Burton Club" series of limited editions began publication and continued at least through the 1920's. The stories collected in the Nights are often sexual in content and were considered pornographic by the Victorian standards in place at the time of Burton's publication. Publishers in violation could be jailed. Thus, the way to circumvent obscenity laws was to offer them "FOR PRIVATE SUBSCRIBERS ONLY". Light blue cloth boards with brown leather corners and spine with 5 bands, gilt lettering and decoration on spine, top edges gilt. Wear through to some corners, spine ends rubbed with minor loss to a few. Front hinges on 4 vols cracked with all covers firmly attached. Special binder reinforced interior hinges with light blue cloth tape that matches cloth on covers. Clean marbled blue endpapers. No names, writing or bookplates. A total of 113 tissue guarded full-page illustrations. Twenty color plates with a color frontis illustration in each volume including a portrait of the author . Pages are clean and bright, no foxing.
