London, Printed for Tho. Boreman, Bookseller, near the two giants in Guildhall, 1740. [Price 4d]. FIRST EDITION 1740, 32mo, 59 x 44 mm, 2 5/16 x 1¼ inches, woodcut frontispiece of the Guildhall, double ruled border to title page, pages: xxiv, (25) - 128, including 12 page List of (Little) Subscribers and 8 pages of introduction for little readers, bound in original Dutch flowered paper over boards, no lettering or label. Spine slightly rubbed, slightly worn at tail of spine with very small split to lower hinge, top 20 mm (¾") of spine very neatly repaired with matching paper (not Dutch flowered), corners and boards slightly rubbed, no inscriptions, contents clean, sturdily bound. A very good copy of the rare first edition of Volume II which was published after Volume I but the same year. A further 8 volumes were published in the series by 1743. These little books were some of the earliest published for children which were not moral or religious in purpose. They were published for subscribers only which partly accounts for their scarcity.
